What's New?

Busy as ever, HFREC's Children's Program has made more new changes!

The holiday season, from Thanksgiving to the New Year, was a great success and tons of fun for families and staff.  In November, children wrote letters of thanks to prepare for the holiday and helped to decorate the playroom with turkeys, pumpkins, and pilgrims.  December holidays came along quickly after that and the Children's Program worked hard to keep the playroom looking and feeling festive with tons of beautiful decorations and fun holiday-centered activities (even gingerbread house decorating! Yum!).

To top off the holidays, Children's Program had its annual Holiday Party for its families, which was extremely well attended by both volunteers and families! Children participated in fun activities like pin the nose on the snowman, marshmallow bobbing, face painting, and of course, limbo! Children had the opportunity to get their photo taken with Santa and were able to decorate ornaments of their own with their families.

After the holidays, January breezed by and we are already on our way into February! In January, we had the pleasure of adding a new staff person. Renee Coff, who began her work with us as a dedicated Wednesday night volunteer has begun working at Hamilton Family Center as the Children's Program Intern!

For the month of February, Children's Program will be hosting a number of events, both old and new. We are trying our very first Music Night on Thursday February 7th! It should be tons of fun as the kids experiment with rhythm and make instruments of their own!  We are also starting a bi-weekly Teen Writing Class beginning Wednesday, February 13th from 7-8:30 pm where teens will get a chance to express themselves through the medium of writing--including poetry, prose, and even some music lyrics!
A fun new February activity for our 8-11 year olds will be taking place on Thursday, February 21st, when the kids learn how to perfect the art of Paper Mache!  Last, but certainly not least, we will be having a Valentine's Day Party for our families, when else, but on Thursday, February 14th from 6:00 pm to 7:30! Please come join us for the celebration and show the kids what love is all about!

Please take a moment to look over our February calendar for more information on any and all events, and let us know if you'd like to sign up for any extra times!

Volunteer of the Quarter!
Beth Lemon has been a dedicated and consistent volunteer for the Children's Program. Beth, a longtime and regular Thursday night volunteer, rarely misses a day and always comes with a smile on her face. The children adore her and so do we. She and fellow volunteer, Melea, recently hosted a mask making Mardi Gras activity for our kids.  The children made Mardi Gras masks of their very own, sequins and all! It was a great success, and we look forward to the next activity that Beth plans for our kids!

Thank you Beth, and ALL of our volunteers for your continuous dedication!
