WINTER 2010 NEWSLETTER

WINTER 2010

As we tie up loose ends in preparation for heading south, I wanted to get a short newsletter out to report on the excellent fall fishing, and to thank those who fished with us last year for your business.  Hopefully you had a great fishing trip, exciting adventure offshore, and hopefully a memorable catch!  If all goes well, deckhand Richard Wright and I will be heading south Sunday Jan 3 with three other boats to begin fishing for sailfish off Isla Mujeres, Mexico around January 14.  Hopefully, fishing in 2010 picks up where 2009 left off, cause we had some fantastic fishing
last year!
For several reasons the mailing of this
newsletter was delayed.... at this time the OBSESSION has arrived safely in Mexico after a difficult trip, which was documented in the fishing reports section of OBSESSION website.  Obsession Fishing Reports

HIGHLIGHTS OF FALL 2009 FISHING SEASON

Fall 2009 was a great finish to an excellent year, which began with a good showing of 100-250 lb bluefin tuna March thru early April, and good yellowfin tuna and great dolphin fishing thru May and June.  After some exciting kite fishing for big yellowfin in early July, we enjoyed remarkable sailfishing Sailfish 1from mid-July thru August and outstanding white marlin fishing in August and September.   Fall 2009 began with some of the finest white marlin fishing seen in years and ended with great yellowfin tuna fishing and some outstanding wahoo fishing as well.

September offered any type of fishing you could want...... it was all good, and some of it was spectacular!   In five consecutive fishing days in mid-late September, Jim Groff & crew caught 9 white marlin & 30 dolphin; Jeremy Smith & crew boated 40 dolphin; the next day Dennis Robke & crew released 5 white marlin & boated 20 dolphin;  two days later Mike Garofalo and Philly boys boated their limit of yellowfin tuna; and the next day Les Winner & crew released 14 white marlin! Flags That's the awesome thing about fishing the Outer Banks of North Carolina.... ya never know what you are going to catch!   A few days later, Eric Michael & crew filled the box with yellowfin and blackfin tuna & dolphin, including 3 citation earning 70-81 lb lunker yellowfin.  The first day in October, Jerry Dew & crew filled the box with yellowfin tuna including several 65-70 lb fish.

Weather ruined us most of the fall.... windiest fall in recollection.   But whenever we got out, catches were great;  limits of yellowfin were common, and we had good wahoo fishing.  In early November, David Tooker's crew only boated 12 yellowfin but had 2 dolphin and 3 citation earning 40+ lb wahoo.  A few days before Thanksgiving, Jim & Jack McCurtain and friends boated their limit of yellowfin tuna and two 35-40 lb wahoo. tuna and wahoo  I ran two charters in December, one the first week and one the day after Christmas, and on both trips, we caught our limit of 20-25 lb yellowfin tuna.  Hopefully the improvement in yellowfin tuna fishing we saw this year compared to the last two years bodes well for next year!

Anglers fishing on the OBSESSION earned 185 North Carolina Citations last season, including 4 for blue marlin (worst year ever), 65 for sailfish (best year ever), 84 for white marlin, 5 for wahoo, 8 for yellowfin tuna, 4 for bigeyes, 15 for bluefin tuna, 1 for a cobia and one for a mako shark.  The OBSESSION Angler of the Year goes to fourteen years old William Ayers, Greer, SC,  who had never caught anything larger than a 3 lb largemouth bass, for starting his first day offshore catching and releasing a 100 lb blue marlin after a 20 minute battle on standup 30 lb test line,  then one of a double header of white marlin, and then a sailfish to end the day, to give him a personal grand slam!

A tip for the mate (15%) is customary if service is satisfactory.  All you need to bring is your food and beverages for the day, and a few extra coolers to bring home your catch, for which we have a fish cleaning service at the dock. FISHING LICENSES are not needed as all charterboats have blanket licenses to cover our customers.

If you want to go fishing, but need additional people to share costs for a charter, please let me know and I will  present several options to you.  Last season I put together at least 6 "makeup" groups of folks that alone did not have enough to fill the boat.  So, if you do not have a full group, let me know cause we can very possibly work it out!

Next season, I will again post fishing reports and photos most every day we get offshore. We have a new fishing reports format in place..... hope you like it!  It allows for you to post comments.... hopefully not X-rated!  I would be more than happy email photos I take of you and your catches.  I will have a new photo album on board next year with 2009 catches.
