October is Kids' Month!

The YMCAs of Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo are dedicating the month of October to encouraging children and youth in our community to "Find their Fit." During the month of October children and youth, 14 years and under, are invited to take advantage of a FREE membership and participate in a variety of active programs and special events.

For the fourth year in a row, the Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth has assigned the Waterloo Region an "F" for Physical activity levels. Only 12 per cent of Canadian children and youth are meeting Canada's physical activity guidelines of 90 minutes a day.

"The Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card describes a reality for Canada's children and youth that is unacceptable to the YMCA," said Joanne Lea, General Manager, Chaplin Family YMCA. "It doesn't have to be this way, these outcomes can be changed."

Making physical activity a part of one's day is fun and healthy. Encouraging kids to build physical activity into their daily routine helps to create a pattern that may stay with them for the rest of their lives.

"We know that if given the opportunity and the support they need, children will choose to be active," said Kim McLean, General Manager, A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA.

Organizations like the YMCA have a unique and important role to play in a child's healthy
development. The YMCA offers a wide variety of recreational-level, structured and unstructured active programming so that there is something for all interests and abilities.

In keeping with our commitment to build strong kids, we are inviting kids 14 years of age and younger to find their Fit at the YMCA. They can participate in all of the non-registered programs for free!

For more information on the non-registered programs offered on a daily basis and special event schedule please check out our website www.ymcacambridgekw.ca.

Tell your friends and family or bring them along!  Each participant will need to register at the front desk. They will receive a membership card for the month so they can access the facilities at their own convenience.

Healthy habits start earlier than you think. It's time to "Find your Fit."

Peace Week Nominations are Open

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2010 Peace Medallions!

Do you know someone in the Cambridge or Kitchener-Waterloo community doing great work to promote peace? Nominate them for a Peace Medallion!

On November 19th, the YMCA is honoring members of the community with the YMCA Peace Medallions in Cambridge in collaboration with the YMCA "Art of Peace" exhibit at Cambridge Centre for the Arts.  We are currently accepting nominations in the following three categories:

Strong Kid:  Nominate yourself or a young person who is acting today to change our world, rather than waiting to be a leader of tomorrow.

Strong Role Model (19+):  Nominate yourself or an adult who inspires others - especially kids - by demonstrating how we can all be socially responsible.

Strong Community (group):  Nominate your group or people you know that demonstrate that we can make a difference by thinking globally or acting locally to engage Peace.

Nominations are being accepted until October 22nd, 2010.

Know an Artist?  Invite them to submit their interpretation of Peace to the "Art of Peace" Exhibit.

Please see our YMCA Peace Weekpage for more information and the online nomination form.

Live Life Well - Fitness Tip
It's tough sitting at a desk all day. Remember when you're sitting for long periods of time to periodically get up and stretch.

Stretch your neck and shoulders. Point your toes, then stretch out your calves and heels. It's important to keep your blood flowing all day and taking 5 minutes to stretch out your muscles and joints during the day will immediately liven you up and make you feel refreshed.  It's the perfect way to beat the 3:30pm
energy crash without turning to sugar or caffeine.
