Your source for YMCA Stories

Just about everyone has a YMCA story or knows someone who does. These stories have share common themes about how the YMCA made an impact on someone. They demonstrate how the YMCA in all of its programs and sites gives people a sense of belonging that supports their personal growth. We have placed some of theses stories in each section of our new website so that you can get a sense of the difference the YMCA makes in individual's lives in each area of the YMCA.

FIT TIP:
Boom, boom, boom! Headaches

by Dave Patterson, BSc (Kin) MTS
A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA Volunteer

Headaches are one of the most common causes of human discomfort. While they could be a symptom of a more serious brain disease or injury, the vast majority of headaches are caused by anxiety, stress and tension. Tension headaches are associated with persistent contractions of the muscles in the neck and upper back. This ailment often is relieved through relaxation techniques or massage. Migraines may be vascular in nature, with that nagging throb, which could last hours or even days. Much research is underway to identify contributing factors and successful treatments.

In reality, each individual may have different contributory elements involved, so it would be worth the time and effort to seek to identify these and deal with them as best we can. Sometimes relief comes through simple changes such as: dealing with emotional life stressors, improving the lighting in one's home or work environment, dealing with physical factors like blocked sinuses, eliminating foods that seem to trigger symptom onset, adding regular exercise to the weekly routine, or when necessary, seeking medical interventions. So be good to yourself.

Report to Our Communities 2009

Our annual report to our communities looks at how our YMCAs build strong, healthy communities.

Use the front door or a side door

Our new website reflects your everyday experience with the YMCA. People use more than 40 doors to get into "their" YMCA and many phone numbers, so we have set up the website so that you can go directly to the section that matches how you most frequently use the YMCA.

In addition to our "front door,"
we have created a series of "side doors":
Each entrance connects you to all the opportunities the YMCA provides you to pursue good health in spirit, mind and body.
