Agnes Nowaczek's YMCA Story:
How the YMCA helped me protect myself from bullying
I immigrated to Canada from Poland at the age of 14, along with my mother, joining my father and one of my older sisters who settled in Scarborough. After only two weeks of attending grade eight at my new elementary school, I was bullied by a few of the Canadian girls Appropriate steps were taken with the police and school, but my wounded self-esteem seemed to follow me to high school where at the end of my first semester I was bullied again, also by girls from my school. I moved to another school but I also joined the local YMCA. Read Agnes' complete story here.
It helps to demonstrate why the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign is so important.

FIT TIP:
Did the Olympics change you?
by Dave Patterson, BSc (Kin) MTS A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA Volunteer
What an exciting time for all Canadians to watch with pride and joy as our winter Olympic athletes competed on home soil! Spectacular highlights included: first gold in ice dance; an emotional bronze winning performance by Joannie Rochette; plus several fantastic gold (and silver and bronze!) winners in bobsleigh, freestyle skiing, speed skating, skeleton, snowboard, curling and of course hockey!
Not to mention an outstanding, career end, bronze medal performance by our ultimate athlete, Clara Hughes - the only person in history to earn multiple medals over several Olympics in both summer and winter games. O Canada!
But where do we go from here? All that emotion and intensity, effort and accomplishment should not conclude in February in Vancouver. What now? Well why don't we build on the momentum and national pride that was gained through the XXI Winter Olympic Games?
Whether you are an athlete, coach or simply an enthusiastic spectator, perhaps you could be prompted to some form of action through the results of a recent Angus Reid poll. Commissioned by Sport Matters, the survey showed that:
- 8 out of 10 Canadians feel our athletes' performances will have a positive impact on national unity.
- 91% of Canadians link the great results of our athletes to a positive impact on national pride.
- 74% of Canadians want to see an initiative like Own the Podium continue in the post 2010 era.
- 84% of Canadians believe the Canadian team results will have a positive impact on motivating Canadians to participate in sport.
So use these findings to reflect on your own views concerning sport, fitness and nationalism and seek out tangible ways to express your values through your YMCA in a spirit of acceptance, caring, giving and responsibility.

Tell your YMCA Story
and help change lives
By telling your story and sharing it with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours, you can help raise funds for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. Funds raised give needed financial support for kids and families who can't afford the full cost of participating in YMCA programs.
Our 2010 goal is to raise $234,500 in Waterloo Region so that we can provide 2,800 assisted memberships for low-income children, youth and families and send 425 children to camp.
Please give as generously as possible online or at your nearest Family YMCA. |

An evening of fun and friendship
On January 16, the Host Program brought together volunteers and their matches for an evening of pizza and games. This is an annual event that is always anticipated and was once again roundly received with a record attendance of 175 participants. The room was alive with the sounds of laughter and conversation as people were trying to master their hand at new and classic board games. Volunteers and newcomers from the Host Friendship, Mentorship, Youth and Older Adult programs took part in this fun and memorable evening.
The evening highlighted the valuable contributions that our volunteers make and the new and lasting friendships that are formed with the newcomers.
We thank Tim Horton's for their generous contribution of coffee and tea.
