My YMCA Story:
Rehana Ansari
Bringing harmony to our multicultural garden

This story was presented at the launch of the YMCA of Cambridge's Ambassador Project. It is an initiative of the Cultural Diversity department.

The Ambassador Project itself is closely knit to the heart of anyone who enjoys communicating with people. It is more like a feeling you get when you hold a chunk of earth in the palm of your hand, a sense that carries you beyond yourself and opens your soul to others around you-a connection we all share.

Dealing with H1N1
YMCA wants to keep you healthy

We encourage participants and staff to recognize the symptoms and to stay home if they are infected with H1N1. Everyone is encouraged to follow proper etiquette for washing hands and coughing/sneezing to prevent infection. We are doing our part by increasing our cleaning, providing hand sanitizer and information.

Stork Family YMCA
Stork Family YMCA is under construction
Contractor anticipates completion by March 2011

What began as a dream of a new Family YMCA in an area of Waterloo that needed recreation facilities has moved off the drawing board and will soon begin taking shape at the corner of Fischer-Hallman and Laurelwood.

"Today, we begin to deliver on a promise to the people-especially the families-in Waterloo," said Mike Stork, president of the Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA. "We promised to create a place that touches people's lives by giving them a supportive environment where they can grow in spirit, mind and body and that our new Family YMCA would be where it was needed the most. I'm proud that the Stork Family YMCA will soon fulfill our promise."

FIT TIP:
Faith and Fitness

by Dave Patterson, BSc (Kin) MTS
A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA Volunteer

Known as the "father of aerobic exercise," Dr. Kenneth Cooper helped to launch a new movement in North America. In 1968, he published Aerobics, which offered the then-revolutionary notion that vigorous exercise could help people get and stay healthy. Two years later, he founded the Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, a world-renowned facility devoted to the benefits of exercise and preventive medicine. He later published the book Faith-Based Fitness. In it, he asserts that "faith" can play a significant role in a person's health.

The message of the book is that our beliefs are one of the most powerful things we have. If we have strong beliefs, along with discipline, we can reach a level of ultimate fitness both spiritually and physically. Cooper asserts unless you are both spiritually and physically fit, you really aren't fit. The combination of both offers a synergistic effect, bringing a measure of joy and peace.

Similarly, a founding tenet and the ongoing mission of the YMCA is to promote health in body, mind and spirit.  So take some time to explore your convictions and then aim for personal growth physically, mentally, as well as emotionally and spiritually.  You'll be glad you did!
