FIT TIP: More Rest for the Weary
by Dave Patterson, BSc (Kin) MTS
A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA Volunteer
I admit in my overly active lifestyle I used to call sleep "wasted downtime." But there's no getting around it, adequate rest translates into a healthier and more productive life. If you are struggling to get enough snooze time, perhaps one of these hints may be in order.
- Go dark. When it's getting late and we are still thinking, worrying and working away, a subtle aid is to 'set the mood' by turning out most of the lights. When a home is ablaze with artificial daylight, we are more likely to stay alert and active. Conversely, in the dim glow of a bedside lamp, we're allured to the blankets.
- Engage in quieting activities. For some, a TV brings drowsiness but for others it maintains a level of alertness. Or sometimes a good book is all it takes to calm oneself toward a blissful dream state.
- Know your rhythms. We all have our own unique circadian rhythms, whereby our hunger, pulse rate and metabolic processes peak and plummet throughout the day. In those low moments of the day when work is required, we counteract under-productivity by supplementing with a brisk walk or a healthy snack. But when downtime is warranted, "listen" to your body and take a nap or head to bed before your "second wind" kicks in and you lose the opportunity for much needed rest.
