YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo
Greetings!

Taking the YMCA to the kids!

virtual y - body2Waterloo Region's first Virtual YMCA was launched on February 29 at St. John's Catholic Elementary School on Strange Street in Kitchener. What at first may sound like some kind of online experience is actually an innovative program to respond to the needs of children living in neighbourhoods that could benefit from additional supports to develop the life skills they need to succeed and thrive in life.

While financial assistance helps many children benefit from participating in YMCA camps and programs offered by the region's Family YMCAs, a need was identified to "take the YMCA to the kids" in the form of a Virtual YMCA. This program is modelled after one pioneered in New York City that has also proven successful in the Hamilton/Burlington area.

Hundreds build strong kids by participating in special events
YMCA Strong Kids Campaign
Two special events in support ot the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign involved hundreds of people and have raised thousands of dollars to ensure a family's ability to pay the fees is not a barrier to enjoying the benefits of participating in YMCA programs such as day and overnight camps and memberships.

Many Cambridge kids will participate in YMCA  programs as a result of The Artsy Affair held by the YMCA of Cambridge on Saturday, April 5. There was quite a buzz of excitment in the corridors of the Chaplin Family YMCA as attendees participated in the live art auction, a silent auction and enjoyed good food, beverages and music provided by sponsors. A special thank you to Scotiabank who was our lead sponsor and guest artist Ann Harvey.

The YMCA Get Fit Challenge got off to a high energy start with a kick-off fitness class that combined Hi-Lo impact, Zumba and line dancing at the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA.  Eighty four particpants accepted Roger Pownall's challenge to increase their level of physical activity or add variety to it while raising funds to help Kitchener-Waterloo kids access YMCA programs. The Challenge began April 4 and continued until April 21. A thank you to our sponsors especially lead sponsors Heffner Lexus and Heffner Toyota.

Participants are asked to hand in their pledge forms, money collected and activity tracking forms by April 25. Everyone who meets their physical activity goal (minimum 9 hours) and raises at least $50 is eligible for a prize. In addition to the 6 grand prizes, at least 25 other prizes will be distributed at a finale event to be held May 1 at 5:30 p.m. Be there in person to select your prize!

Build strong kids by building their positive identity
  • Dwell on what children do right instead of what they do wrong.
  • Avoid comparing young people with each other.
  • Let youth know you are proud of their talents, capabilities, and discoveries.
  • Listen when young people talk about their sense of purpose in life.
  • Ask young people what they are passionate about.
Understanding Cross Training

by Dave Patterson, BSc (Kin), MTS

A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA Volunteer

Many pro athletes have to follow a strict regimen of sport-specific intensive training.  However, most of us have the luxury of allowing the seasons to guide us into different leisure enjoyments.  Balancing our activity cycle with a variety of pursuits is the rationale behind "cross-training".  The advantages are many: including variety means we are less likely to grow bored or unmotivated; trying various sports improves overall fitness because we are more likely to use a wide range of muscles and joints; this variation avoids imbalances in strength; and balanced activity reduces the risk of injuries.

So, if you are committed to a certain sport, that's fantastic!  But if you want to improve performance by adding new activity, choose wisely.  Supplement running with swimming; enhance your martial arts with weight training.  Pick an activity that will help you reach your goals with great enjoyment and without injury.  Remember: stay fit for life!

Global Youth Forum challenged teens to build a strong global community
Marc KielburgerIn response to the identified need for newcomer youth to feel welcome in their new Canadian comunities, the YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo organized a Global Youth Forum called: Building a Strong Global Community. Funding was provided by the Government of Canada through Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Keynote speaker Marc Kielburger challenged youth to make a difference in their world. He captivated his audiences with tales of his own experiences of moving from "me to we" and those of peopl involved with or supported by the groups he co-founded:
Free the Children and Leaders Today.

There were 197 youth participants, 22 teachers, 25 community representatives, 23 presenters and 15 volunteers.
My YMCA Story by Abby Goodrum

This YMCA has gone above and beyond all my expectations. I've joined and quit gyms in the past without having used the membership at all (or just barely). But this time - in large part because of the 1-on-1 training I received, I will continue to work out and use my membership.

In fact, I like this YMCA so much, I've encouraged all of my friends to join! My experience in this project has been a life-altering and epiphanal point for me. I've never liked exercise. I've never felt very positive about my fitness/strength. I've always shunned cardio.

My past experience (at other gyms) has always been that the gym was more interested in my money than in my success or happiness. I've even hired personal trainers before - and although the training gains have been worthwhile, they've not had the effect of transforming my thinking/feeling about my fitness. I never felt in the past that I could be strong or fit and I never felt in the past that I really belonged in a gym. I never really felt in the past like I was "one of those fitness focused gym-types"

That's all changed now. Now I have strength and endurance goals that I'm excited to be working toward. I feel like a part of the "gym-rats" club! I don't feel embarrassed about my current level of fitness - at least, not enough to let it stop me. This is a fabulous change from how I felt in the past, and I really mean it when I say that I couldn't have done it without the YMCA and most especially, I couldn't have done it without my trainer.

Mentoring Partnership Waterloo Region

Mentoring Partnership matchOn Wednesday, April 2, 2008, The Mentorship Partnership Waterloo Region hosted its official program launch.

The launch spotlighted the different ways individuals can get involved, the benefits for both mentors and mentees, and the partnership between the YMCA Cross Cultural & Immigrant Services' Host Program and Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network (WRIEN). The partnership brings together the immigrant settlement expertise of the YMCA and the business expertise and connections of WRIEN.
