CDC Reports One-Third Of Teen Mothers Didn't Use Birth Control Because They Didn't Think They Could Get Pregnant A new study from the Centers for Disease Control concludes that a large number of teenage girls don't know their chances of getting pregnant. In a survey of thousands of teenage mothers who had unintended pregnancies, one-third of the teenagers said they did not use birth control because they did not think they could get pregnant. While the CDC did not explore the specific reasons for the misconception, past studies have shown that teens thought they couldn't get pregnant the first time they had sex, didn't think they could get pregnant at that time of the month or thought they were sterile. Other reasons included because their partner did not want to use contraception (23.6%) or because they did not mind getting pregnant (22.1%). Read more Gay Straight Alliances Chapters Appearing in Earlier Grades
While common in high schools across the country, chapters of the Gay Straight Alliance with the younger school set have been slower to gain a foothold, in some cases because of the controversy the clubs stir up. But there are signs of increasing acceptance. There are now 500 middle school Gay Straight Alliance chapters nationwide, up from a couple dozen three years ago, according to the national Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. Many of the clubs formed after publicized suicides of middle school children such as 13-year-old Seth Walsh of Tehachapi (Kern County) in 2010 and 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover of Springfield, Mass., in 2009. Both were bullied because they were believed to be gay. Read more

Advocacy Updates
| No Religious Exemptions to Birth Control Access After months of constant activity by grassroots activists across the country asking President Obama to hold the line in the face of pressure from social conservatives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that it would not expand religious exemptions to no-copay birth control requirements of the Affordable Care Act. "Today Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius stood with young women and did not bow to political pressure," said Debra Hauser, Executive Director of Advocates for Youth. "This is a victory for science, common sense, and young people in America. Millions of young women at Catholic and religious affiliated colleges will no longer face barriers to accessing birth control through their student health plans. This decision is also a huge step forward for young people who receive insurance coverage through their parents' health care plans at religious affiliated hospitals and other businesses." "Young women deserve loophole-free protection no matter where they go to school," said Jessika Parry, who attends Boston College. "This is also a great day for young people who are able to stay on their parents' health insurance due to the Affordable Care Act, but weren't previously able to get contraception because their parents work at religious affiliated institutions. Cost-free birth control will have an enormous impact on young women's health and lives." All student health plans must now cover no-copay birth control by August 2012. Religious affiliated institutions, such as Catholic hospitals, have been given an additional year to comply with the new regulations. Most California Schools Waiting to Implement Same-Sex History California education officials say school districts can make their own decisions on adding the contributions of gay and lesbian people to the curriculum. A law that requires expanding social science materials took effect January 1, 2012. But many local officials say they do not have the resources to revise study materials. Read more |
