| Number of School Health Clinics in State Rises, Though Funding Issues Persist
There are 183 school health centers in California, an increase from 121 in 2004. According to the California School Health Centers Association, 12 more clinics are expected to open by next summer. Most of the centers are staffed by physicians and nurse practitioners and are located in low-income neighborhoods. The centers are run by hospitals or community clinics. The centers generally offer a range of health care services, such as dental care, drug counseling, immunizations, mental health treatment and physical examinations. Experts say the clinics are a key part of the health care safety net because they offer no-cost or low-cost care for low-income residents who might not receive regular medical care. Read more
Disparities in Reproductive Health Care Linger
Research published in the American Journal of Public Health indicates that declines in the use of women's health services from 2002 to 2008 show gaps in access to care. The study reports that women who are younger, economically disadvantaged or undereducated used fewer reproductive health services in recent years, highlighting disparities that persist despite decades of progress expanding access to such care. The gaps in utilization can contribute to teenage pregnancies and more sexually transmitted diseases. Clinical practitioners are already seeing the consequences in community adolescent health clinics. Read more
One-Third of Teen Users Rely on the Pill for Non-Contraceptive Purposes
A recent study by the Guttmacher Institute shows the most common reason U.S. women use oral contraceptive pills is to prevent pregnancy, but 14% of pill users-1.5 million women-rely on them exclusively for noncontraceptive purposes. The study documenting this finding, "Beyond Birth Control: The Overlooked Benefits of Oral Contraceptive Pills," by Rachel K. Jones of the Guttmacher Institute, also found that more than half (58%) of all pill users rely on the method, at least in part, for purposes other than pregnancy prevention-meaning that only 42% use the pill exclusively for contraceptive reasons. Menstrual-related disorders and irregular periods are particularly common during adolescence. Not surprisingly, the study found that teens aged 15-19 who use the pill are more likely to do so for non-contraceptive purposes (82%) than for birth control (67%). Moreover, 33% of teen pill users report using oral contraceptive pills solely for noncontraceptive purposes. "It is well established that oral contraceptives are essential health care because they prevent unintended pregnancies," said study author Rachel K. Jones. "This study shows that there are other important health reasons why oral contraceptives should be readily available to the millions of women who rely on them each year." Read more
