"Imagine Me and You" Million Moms Challenge Contest
Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Invites Applications for Dissertation Fellowships in Education
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation works to help high-achieving, low-income students - from middle school to graduate school - reach their full potential through education. The foundation created its dissertation fellowship program in 2010 to advance its understanding of the factors and contexts that help low-income students overcome personal adversity and challenging socioeconomic circumstances to excel academically. The foundation plans to use this knowledge to design programs and interventions that help more low-income students identified as high-achieving in their primary and secondary school years to sustain their achievement levels through college and beyond. The fellowships are intended to support doctoral students for work done after the successful defense of their dissertation proposals. Although applicants must be candidates for a doctoral degree at a graduate school in the United States, they need not be U.S. citizens. Applications are encouraged from a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to education, sociology, economics, psychology, statistics, and psychometrics. The fellowship is a one-time award of up to $25,000, which may be used for a period of not less than nine months and up to eighteen months. Four fellowships will be awarded. Get more info here

Personhood Measure May Be On November Ballot in CA
Proponents of a measure that would ban abortions by giving equal rights to fetuses have been cleared to gather signatures in California, the secretary of state's office said Friday. The push comes on the heels of a similar effort rejected by voters in Mississippi earlier this month. Union City-based California Civil Rights Foundation must collect more than 807,000 signatures by April to qualify for the November 2012 ballot, the secretary of state's office said. The foundation's president, Walter Hoye, is an Oakland pastor known for protesting outside abortion clinics. He said he launched a similar campaign in California in 2010, but it fell short of the required signatures. He said he is hoping for a spirited signature drive for the "California Human Rights Amendment." Hoye's group is not affiliated with Personhood USA, which sponsored the Mississippi initiative. The California proposal would define a person as a living human being from the time of fertilization, giving embryos equal protection under the state Constitution. The Legislative Analyst's Office and Department of Finance said if voters adopted the initiative, the potential cost to the state could be in the tens of millions of dollars annually to establish due process and equal protection for "zygotes, embryos, and fetuses." NIJ Study Finds School Interventions Significantly Reduce Dating Violence
A National Institute of Justice (NIJ) study has found that school-level interventions reduced dating violence as much as 50 percent in 30 New York City public schools. These interventions included using school-based restraining orders, increasing faculty and security presence in dating violence "hot spots," and hanging posters to increase awareness of the issue and encourage students to report it to officials. NIJ is a research branch of the Office of Justice Programs at the U.S. Department of Justice. "The success of school-level interventions is particularly important because they can be implemented with very few extra costs to schools. The scientific methods in this study were rigorous," said NIJ Director John H. Laub, Ph.D. Read the full report
Rising Poverty Rates Take a Toll on Two Generations: Young Children, Young Parents, Single-Mother Families Disproportionately Hit by Weak Economy
According to a new report from Child Trends, the younger the parent and the younger the child, the more likely a family is to be poor. As policy makers ponder the merits of alternative measures of poverty, the Child Trends report outlines the disproportionate effects of poverty on young children, young parents, and children and parents in single-mother families. Among the report's highlights:
- The younger the parent, the more likely a family is to be poor. Households headed by young parents (18-24) are more likely to be poor than households headed by older parents, regardless of marital status.
- The younger the child, the more likely a family is to be poor. Families with young children (0-6) are more likely to be poor than families with older children.
- Overall poverty rates mask much higher rates for some sub-groups, such as single-mother families, whose poverty rate was 40.7 percent in 2010, compared to 8.8 percent for married-couple families.
The Child Trends report also summarizes the large body of research establishing the association between poverty and negative outcomes for adults, including parents, and for children. For parents, the negative effect of poverty extends beyond material hardships and basic needs, and is associated with increased mental health problems and difficulties in parenting. Among children, the effects of poverty are potentially even more pervasive and lasting. Children experiencing early, deep, or persistent poverty are especially likely to experience long-term, deleterious effects on their development and life circumstances, such as increased economic hardships as adults. This brief draws on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, and focuses a two-generation lens on poverty rates and low-income status among children and parents. In addition, it presents data on differences across race, age, family structure, gender, education, employment status and geography. Read the full report
