Girls Only!
The Girls Only prevention education toolkit, focused on girls ages 8-12, seeks to empower girls before they enter their teen years. The program provides a forum for young girls to learn to love and honor themselves, giving them the opportunity to find alternatives to the kinds of abusive relationships with men and with themselves that often lead to involvement with gangs, substance abuse and, eventually, the criminal justice system.
The toolkit, which includes research on the necessity of gender-specific, culturally-specific, age-appropriate programming, is available for FREE on the website. This resource is the product of a collaboration between the San Diego County District Attorney's Office and the City of San Diego Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention.

The National Campaign Announces New Resource for Birth Control Info

Have you heard about Bedsider.org, the newest program developed for young women by The National Campaign? Bedsider is an innovative birth control support network that lives online and on mobile devices, too. And it's totally free. It doesn't look, sound, or act like any medical information you've seen before. It serves up clear, solid facts and advice about birth control and about a lot of other things, too. And it does so with humor, edge, and candor. An informational webinar about Bedsider is being offered on two different dates to demonstrate how Bedsider can help women find a birth control method that's right for them-and stick with it-until they're ready to have a child. Webinars: Monday October 24, 11-11:45am or Wedesday October 26, 11-11:45am

New Report from CDC on Teen Sexual Activity  and Contraceptive Use

According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), less than half of teens (ages 15-19) have had sex and the percentage of teen boys who used a condom the first time they had sex is on the rise. "The nation's teen pregnancy and birth rates are now at record lows and the credit for this truly extraordinary progress goes to teens themselves who are making better decisions about sex and contraceptive use," said Sarah Brown, CEO of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. The full NCHS report on teen sexual activity and contraceptive use in the United States 2006-2010 can be found at:  www.cdc.gov/nchs

7 Strategies for Preventing Multiple Risky Behaviors Among Adolescents
A new research brief by Child Trends offers seven strategies for preventing teens from engaging in multiple risky behaviors. Risky behaviors are fairly common in adolescence and can be associated with serious, long-term consequences, particularly when adolescents engage in more than one behavior. Although adolescents often take part in multiple risky behaviors, most risk prevention programs have been designed to prevent a single risky behavior. However, research suggests that there are program approaches that may prevent multiple risky behaviors as well as common factors that can influence risk-taking. Designing programs to prevent multiple risky behaviors by specifically targeting common risk and protective factors may be more cost-effective and more likely to produce long-term behavioral change. House Committee Proposes Cuts to HIV Prevention  On Thursday, September 29, the House Appropriations Committee put forward legislation that would fund the Department of Health and Human Services and related agencies for the 2012 fiscal year. The legislation includes cuts to programs that are critical to our nation's response to HIV/AIDS, including $32.7 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention and $283 million the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. It would also ban the use of federal funds on syringe exchange, strip all Title X family planning funding and failed to include any increase in funding for the nation's struggling AIDS Drug Assistance Programs. The bill would also rescind $1 billion from the Prevention and Public Health Fund included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Read the National Minority AIDS Council's press release on the House Committee's proposed legislation here.
