Study Examines Substance Use, Sexual Intercourse, and Condom Nonuse Among Depressed Adolescents and Young Adults
The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, showed that depressed youth were less likely to have sex within hours after substance use and more likely to have sex within 12 hours after marijuana use. There was no main effect of substance use on condom nonuse. Study authors concluded that findings from this small, predominantly female sample suggest that contextual factors, not intoxication, influence associations of substance use with sexual behavior in depressed youth. During the study, depressed, sexually active outpatients aged 15-22 years reported alcohol use, marijuana use, and sex (and condom use if sex occurred) on a personal digital assistant for two weeks. Read the study here.
New HIV Contracts Set to Start in San Francisco Community groups championing San Francisco's new HIV prevention strategy, which emphasizes testing, as well as linking those infected to care and treatment, have gotten a renewed contract for $7.1 million. The city aims to cut the number of annual new HIV infections in half by 2017. The contracts provide money for community groups working on syringe exchange programs, engaging with transgender populations, Native Americans, Latinos, and Asian Pacific Islanders. Standardized Test on Health and Sex Education for Public Schools in DC District of Columbia public schools are planning to test students on their knowledge of human sexuality, contraception and drug use this spring. According to the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, the exam will be the first standardized test on health and sex education in the country. The 50-question exam will be given to students in grades 5, 8 and 10. The city's rates of childhood obesity, sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy are among the highest in the country. School officials say the test will help determine what students know about risky behavior. Study Suggests IUD May Protect Against Cervical Cancer A study published in the British medical journal, The Lancet Oncology, finds that women who use IUDs (intrauterine devices) for birth control have a significantly lower risk of developing cervical cancer. The researchers found this "protective effect" of IUDs is evident in the first year of use and remained significant after 10 years of use. The researchers suggest a number of possible explanations for their results: it's possible that the process of inserting or removing the device destroys precancerous lesions or perhaps triggers a long-lasting immune response, thereby reducing the likelihood of HPV progression. | New Law Aims to Help Reduce Human Trafficking and Slavery
Under the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act, retailers and manufacturers of apparel, footwear, toys and many other consumer products will have to take a look at the risks of human trafficking and slavery in their supply chains. The Act requires large retailers and manufacturers doing business in California to disclose steps to address human trafficking and slavery on the corporate websites beginning January 1, 2012. The Act applies to nearly every major brand of consumer products sold in the United States. Read the law here Support Teen Pregnancy Prevention On September 20th the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education (LHHS) Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee will hold its mark-up of the Fiscal Year 2012 LHHS appropriations bill. The Senate mark-up is extremely important to the survival of the evidence-based Office of Adolescent Health (OAH) Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Program and the Title X family planning program. Strong support for these programs in the Senate will be important to preserving their funding. Contact Senators on the LHHS Appropriations Subcommittee and tell them to support the OAH Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Program and Title X. |
