Northstar Halfpipe: Pearls of Wisdom from the Winner I had a great weekend at Northstar for the North Face Park and Pipe Open. I made my first big slopestyle final and won superpipe. The most important thing I learned this week competing is to not play it safe if you are confident. In slopestyle I qualified 2nd and then did a safety run first and messed up my second run. The only thing I regret from the weekend was not doing my harder trick on my first run of finals because I had already done it in Semis and knew I could land it perfect. So I didn't end up doing as well in Slope. But I thankfully did not make the same mistake in pipe. I was already winning after my first run and only one man to drop behind me. But I knew I could stomp my double even though I hadn't done any in training so I decided to go for it instead of playing it safe. Which I'm thankful I did because if I hadn't done the double Pat Baskins would have beat my on his second run. So if you are confident in yourself and your tricks don't hold back because even if you don't land it at least you'll be satisfied that you gave it your all. Finally I have to thank Toko JetStream Bloc's for giving me the speed to boost out of the pipe on that warm sunny day. Kyle Smaine |
Hello all! I am just about to leave for Aspen to compete in the Aspen Open, then straight of to Mammoth for the US Halfpipe Grand Prix! I learned that for better and more accurate edge tuning, if you shave off even the smallest bit from the sidewall, you get much more contact surface on the edge with a file! Just take a sidewall carving tool and run the blade several times along the side of your ski close to the edge. This will carve a little groove into your sidewall, but it wont hurt the ski at all! Here is a picture from the Rev Tour competition out at Northstar as well! This winter has been a great learning experience!
