Innovative Product Launch Instructions

Overview
Throughout the past one hundred years, Maytag's suite of quality and dependable appliances has grown to include new and innovative products. But the company has never wavered from its founder's steadfast commitment to quality.

In 2002, Maytag sought out Infographics� for expertise and guidance in improving their laundry products' installation instructions, and within a year Infographics� was producing most of Maytag's Cooking Products installation instructions, as well.

When Maytag decided to launch their most innovative new laundry product in 10 years (The Neptune Drying Center), they naturally came to Infographics� first. Maytag wanted to make sure the installation instructions reflected their founder's goal of complete quality and customer service and Infographics� had become a trusted partner in accomplishing those goals.
Client Objectives
  • Introduce and educate both the professional installer and the customer to an unfamiliar new product offering
  • Establish a positive experience of owning and installing this "first of its kind" new Maytag product
  • Implement a format that could be used for a broad range of future innovative Maytag laundry products
  • Provide universal instructions that create great ownership experiences

  • Product Research (analysis and evaluation of installation process on-site at Maytag plant, project meeting with product engineers, execution and examination of installation process, validation of installation steps)
  • Illustration (sequential action steps)
  • Graphic Design (logical, easy-to-follow presentation of messages)
  • Project Management (producing the publication: direct resources, coordinate approval process, manage production, track and generate client progress reports)
Infographics� Solution
  • Infographics� altered their established publication development process to accommodate Maytag's needs by working off-site and utilizing product prototypes in the Maytag product development labs in Newton, Iowa. Partnering directly with Maytag's product development and manufacturing engineers, Infographics� created an accurate, easy-to-understand publication for their customers.
  • Universal installation instructions were produced using illustrated sequences and minimal words to promote an easy, new installation process for a new, innovative product.
Results
  • The Maytag Neptune Drying Center was named one of BusinessWeek Online Best Products of the Year and was on Oprah's Favorite Things Holiday List in 2004.
  • Customer service and technical support calls for assistance were expected to be less than any previous new product launches
  • The innovative product was launched on time and with product literature within budget
  • Engineering and Product Design personnel were impressed with Infographics� attention to detail, and our willingness to get "hands-on" knowledge of the product
  • The entire Product Development team was equally impressed with Infographics� ability to produce a technically accurate document that was universally easy-to-follow and understand installation and setup on a new product
  • A comparison study of appliance installation instructions showed that Maytag/ Infographics� illustrated instruction manuals were preferred by consumers over all other brands in their market.
