Customer Service Oriented Instructions

Overview
Moen, Inc. is an internationally recognized maker of fine bath and kitchen fixtures and the number one faucet brand in North America. As pioneers in the industry, Moen has a history of leadership in product design and technology and providing superior customer support.

In early 2001, Moen approached Infographics for expertise and guidance in improving their installation instructions. The goal was to create more user-friendly documents that would reduce product returns and customer service calls and aid both consumers and professionals in the installation process.
Client Objectives

  • Create a new document format that provides clear identification of model numbers components and installation steps
  • Establish a format that can be used for a broad range of Moen products
  • Use a broad approach to address the needs of trade professionals and DIY consumers
  • Use few or, if possible, no words
  • Use illustrated installation sequences to facilitate understanding and ease assembly
Infographics Solution
Faucet Install
  • Using prototypes, CAD data and existing products, Infographics analyzed the various platforms in Moen's product portfolio and created a document format that could accommodate a broad range of communications requirements
  • Isometric exploded views were developed to create a component inventory format that is easy for both trade and consumer audiences to use--making it easy for users to identify parts and components before and during the installation process
  • Assembly instructions were redesigned using illustrated sequences and minimal words to facilitate better understanding and minimize translation costs
 
Results

  • The new document platform has become the foundation for all of Moen's installation guides
  • The graphics have provided a solid foundation for communication between consumers and Moen product support personnel
  • Over a 3-year period, Moen found that they had saved over $1.5 million in product returns and customer support costs!!
