FIPC Newsletter

Issue 39 Volume 10  - Week of September 30, 2012

From Pastor Jim

Dear Friends,

Great things are happening here at FIPC!  There is a wonderful joyful spirit in the air!  I can't thank you enough for reaching out to your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers and inviting them to church!  It is making a big difference!!  Way to go!!

God brings people into our lives for us to show the love of Christ to them.  One of the easiest ways for us to share the gospel with them is to use the following format.  Ask yourself what I call "the 3 questions":

  1. What was your life like before you came to personally know Jesus as your Lord and Savior?
  2. What did you do when you accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior.  Did you pray a prayer?  What was that prayer like?
  3. How has knowing Jesus personally changed your life?

Keep it simple and direct.  You may want to follow up and ask if they have any questions. And be sure to ask them about their experience with Jesus and if they would like to know him personally.  Always remember this: God is GOOD!  ALL the time!

Your pastor and friend...

This Week's Devotional
This Week's Devotional

Contentment is hard to attain. Even the apostle Paul, a hero of the faith, had to learn to be content (Phil. 4:11). It was not a natural character trait for him.

For Paul to write that he was content in every situation is truly amazing. At the time of this writing, he was in jail in Rome. Charged with sedition, treason, and other serious crimes, he had appealed to the highest court: Caesar himself. Without other legal recourse and friends in high places, he had to wait for his case to be heard. It seems as if Paul had the right to be an impatient and unhappy person. Instead, he wrote to the Philippians to say that he had learned to be content.

How did he learn this? One step at a time until he could be satisfied even in uncomfortable environments. He learned to accept whatever came his way (v.12) and to receive with thanks whatever help fellow Christians could give (vv.14-18). And most important, he recognized that God was supplying all he needed (v.19).

Contentment is not natural for any of us. The competitive spirit in us drives us to compare, to complain, and to covet. Few of us are in a predicament such as Paul's, but we all face difficulties in which we can learn to trust God and be content.

O Lord, give me the grace to be
Content with what You give to me.
No, more than that, let me rejoice
In all You send, for it's Your choice!
Contentment is not possessing everything but giving thanks for everything you possess.

This Weeks Funnies

Edward Hale, while chaplain of the U.S. Senate, was asked, "Do you pray for the senators?"

He quickly replied, "No. After getting to know the senators, I pray for the people."

I'm not bald...I'm just taller than my hair.

You Know You're In Trouble When...
  •   Your accountant's letter of resignation is postmarked Zurich.
  • Your suggestion box starts ticking.
  • Your secretary tells you the FBI is on line 1, the DA is on line 2, and CBS is on line 3.
  • You make more than you ever made, owe more than you ever owed, and have less than you've ever had.
  • The simple instructions enclosed aren't.
  • People send your wife sympathy cards on your anniversary.
  • The plumber floats by on your kitchen table.

Retiring Cop

A detective who spent his entire career in plain
clothes quit the police force and bought a farm.

"What kind of crops do you plan to grow?" the police
chief asked the farmer-to-be.

"Carrots and potatoes," the man replied.

"Why carrots and potatoes?" asked the chief.

"Because," answered the ex-detective, "I'm very fond
of undercover crops."
