FIPC Newsletter

Issue 38 Volume 10  - Week of September 23, 2012

From Pastor Jim

Dear Friends,

Once again - 5th Quarter last Friday set a new record with 485 youth and 35 adult volunteers!  A special thank you goes out to the Family Life Care Inc. for sponsoring the evening.  We have this Friday off as it is an away game for FIHS.  Our next 5th Quarter will be Friday, Oct. 5th (9:30-11:30PM).

Let me tell you a story - There once was a man who was a member of a church family.  He attended worship pretty regularly, but found himself with more to do on the weekend than he could get done.  He thought that if he would just skip going to worship one Sunday, he would have more time to accomplish all his tasks.  Well, one Sunday lead to another, and another and another.

His church family noticed his absence so an Elder of the church went to visit him at his home.  The man invited the Elder to sit outside on his back porch where the man had just finished cooking hamburgers on a charcoal grill.  They talked for a while and the man said he was sorry for missing church, but he had been just too busy on the weekends.  The Elder nodded and did not say a thing - but bent over and picked up a stick and pulled a coal out of the fire and set it aside.  The coal was a beautiful red color, and it put off a heat they could feel.  After a minute or two, a white film began to form over the hot coal, and slowly the coal began to loose it's heat.  Soon the coal was cold and ashen grey.

The Elder then picked up the coal with his hand and put it back on the fire. It wasn't long until the coal began to glow again, and it's beautiful red heat returned.  The Elder looked at the man and said, "If we are going to retain our fire, we need to be with each other.  We need to regularly worship God, otherwise we lose our fire and our spirit turns ashen."  The Elder then asked, "See you on Sunday?"  The man smiled and replied, "See you next Sunday!"

As the weather cools off, remember not to let your faith do the same. We need each other. God is GOOD!  ALL the time!

This Week's Devotional
This Week's Devotional

You can learn a lot by walking with others through tough times. That's been the case for us as our friends Sam and Carol have trudged through Sam's cancer journey. For a year we watched and prayed as he endured the treatment and the pain. And just when it seemed he was in the clear, a new diagnosis reported more cancer.

The disappointment was obvious. Year two would look a lot like year one as Sam would have to go through the chemo and the sickness and the side effects all over again.

But when Sam told us about what he faced as more months of treatments loomed, he said something we can all learn from: "We want to make sure that through it all God gets the glory and we reflect His love to others." Imagine that! As he faced another year of pain and struggles, Sam's first priority was to show God's love through it all. He was anticipating the time when God's "glory is revealed" (1 Peter 4:13).

Carol wrote to friends, "It has been a year of trials, but God has always pulled us through with His mercy and grace. May we never take our eyes off Him and His love for us."

What mountains do you face? Like Sam and Carol, you too can depend on God's grace to get you through. Pray also that you might reflect His love.

Whenever life's burdens oppress you
And trials are too much to face,
Remember God's strength
in your weakness;

He'll give you His power and grace.
The increasing darkness of trials only makes the lamp of grace shine brighter.

Doctor: "You're in great shape for your age, but I'm not a magician - I can't make you any younger."

Elderly Patient: "Who asked you to make me younger? Just make sure I get older!"

Top 10 Things to Do on the First Day of School 10. As soon as you receive your textbook, page through it scratching each picture and sniffing it.   9. Wear earmuffs. Every few minutes ask the instructor to speak up a bit.   8. Squint thoughtfully at the instructor. In the middle of his or her remarks, raise your hand. Say he or she looks familiar and ask if they've ever been on an episode of "Friends."   7. Speak only in rhymes.   6. Have a friend bring cymbals. Inform the class you are Belgian royalty and have your friend clash the cymbals each time your name is spoken.   5. Address the instructor as "your Excellency."   4. Sing your questions.   3. Sit in the front, sniff a lot while looking around, and finally say, "Okay, who's to blame?"   2. Say, "WOW!" after every sentence in the instructor's lecture.   AND THE NUMBER ONE THING to DO ON the FIRST DAY of SCHOOL?   1. When the instructor calls roll, after each name scream, "That's MEEEEEEE! Oh, no, wait ... sorry!"

A man walked into a gift shop that sold religious items. Near the cash register he saw a display of caps with WWJD printed on all of them. He was puzzled over what the letters could mean, so he asked the clerk.
The clerk replied that the letters stood for "What Would Jesus Do", and was meant to inspire people to not make rash decisions, but rather to imagine what Jesus would do in the same situation.
The man thought a moment and then replied, "Well, I don't think Jesus would pay $17.95 for one of these caps."

My son Zack is 3 and VERY active. My husbands best friend had asked for Zack to be the ring bearer in his wedding (much to my surprise since they know how active he is) Anyways, to make a long story short, I always try to prepare Zack and get him excited about stuff. We were talking about the wedding and what it means to be a ring bearer. He assured me he could do it and was excited. The next day I told him to tell his Mamaw about what he was going to do in the wedding. He said "I'm going to be the bear that gets to carry the rings down the isle. (by Joy Green)
Technology! The gas pumps of today can pump $40 in the same amount of time it took just a few years ago to pump $20. Amazing!
