FIPC Newsletter

Issue 37 Volume 10  - Week of September 16, 2012

From Pastor Jim

Dear Friends,

5th Quarter last Friday set a new record!  462 youth showed up to FIPC after Friday nights football game.  In talking to one of the Clay County Sheriff officers who was present, he said that the Sheriff's office is receiving fewer calls than usual on Friday nights after the football games.  A special thank you goes out to the Vanderpool family who were the sponsors for the evening, and to the Empty Nesters small group who provided the food.  Come out this Friday to see what this event is all about (9:30-11:30PM).

Last week, I went to a conference and learned something about myself.  I am not very good at taking care of myself. This is called "self care" and is important if we want to last for the long haul.  We learn how to take care of ourselves from our family, by modeling what our parents did or didn't do.  As adults, we also develop ideas or myths, which either help us in our self care, or hinder us.  The myth I was beginning to believe which interfered with my taking care of myself was this - I am just too busy.  I began to believe that I was too busy to rest, too busy to exercise, too busy to spend time with God, too busy to play and have fun.  The result was - I was feeling burned out.  Last week was an eye opener for me.  Jesus said this in Matthew 28:29, "...Love your neighbor as yourself."  Think about this - If we are neglecting our self, if we are not loving our self, we will be unable to love our neighbor.

How do we love our self?  Here are a few ideas: 1. Exercise, 2. Play/have fun. 3. Spend quality time with God, reading His Word, praying and listening. 4. Eat right. 5. Get enough sleep.  The list goes on and on.

How are you doing in your self care?  Do we need some encouragement?  How about sending me an e-mail letting me know what you are struggling with and letting me encourage you?

This is the last week to take our church survey, please do so by Friday, 9/21.  See the link below.  If you have questions you may ask Phil White or any of the Elders.  Thank you to those that have already taken the time to enter your information.

As always remember - God is GOOD!  ALL the time!

This Week's Devotional
This Week's Devotional

You're sitting in a darkened theater enjoying a concert, a play, or a film, when suddenly a smartphone screen lights up as a person reads an incoming text and perhaps takes time to reply. In his book The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, Nicholas Carr says that in our connected world, "The sense that there might be a message out there for us" is increasingly difficult to resist.

Samuel was a young boy when he heard a voice call his name and thought it was Eli the priest in the tabernacle where he served the Lord (1 Sam. 3:1-7). When Eli realized that God was calling Samuel, he told the boy how to respond. When God called his name a fourth time, "Samuel answered, 'Speak, for Your servant hears'" (v.10). This attentiveness to God's voice became the pattern of Samuel's life as "the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord" (v.21).

Are we listening for God's voice in our lives today? Are we more drawn by the vibration of a smartphone than the still, small voice of the Lord through His Word and His Spirit?

May we, like Samuel, learn to discern God's voice and say, "Speak, Lord. I'm listening."

May we listen, Lord, to You
As You speak to us today
Through Your Spirit and Your Word-
Help us follow and obey.

Don't let the noise of the world keep you from hearing the voice of the Lord.

This Weeks Funnies
An avid duck hunter was in the market for a new bird dog. His search ended when he found a dog that could actually walk on water to retrieve a duck. Shocked by his find, he was sure none of his friends would ever believe him.

He decided to try to break the news to a friend of his, the eternal pessimist who refused to be impressed with anything. This, surely, would impress him. He invited him to hunt with him and his new dog.
As they waited by the shore, a flock of ducks flew by. they fired, and a duck fell. The dog responded and jumped into the water. The dog, however, did not sink but instead walked across the water to retrieve the bird, never getting more than his paws wet. This continued all day long; each time a duck fell, the dog walked across the surface of the water to retrieve it.

The pessimist watched carefully, saw everything, but did not say a single word. v On the drive home the hunter asked his friend, "Did you notice anything unusual about my new dog?"
"I sure did," responded the pessimist. "He can't swim."

Little Johnny's mother was having difficulty gulping down the birthday cake he had made for her as a surprise.

When she was finished, Little Johnny happily exclaimed, "I'm so glad you like it, Mommy. There should have been 32 candles on the cake, but they were all gone when I took it out of the oven."

Humor provides us with a valuable tool for maintaining an inner strength in the midst of outer turmoil.

Several years ago, Andy was sentenced to prison.
During his stay, he got along well with the guards
and all his fellow inmates. The warden knew that,
deep down, Andy was a good person. So, the warden
made arrangements for the inmate to learn a trade
while doing his time.

Some three years later, Andy was recognized as one
of the best carpenters in the local area. Often, he
would be given a weekend pass to do odd jobs for
citizens of the community. And, he always reported
back to prison by early Sunday evening. Andy was a
model inmate.

One day, the warden considered remodeling his kitchen,
though he lacked the skills to build a set of kitchen
cupboards and a large counter top. So, he called Andy
into his office and asked him to do the job for him.
To the warden's surprise, Andy simply refused to help.

"But, you're an expert. Andy, I really need your help,"
said the warden.

"Gosh, warden, I'd really like to help you, but counter
fitting is what got me into prison in the first place."
