Issue 33 Volume 10  - Week of August 19, 2012

From Pastor Jim

Dear Friends,

We are having a church wide Congregational Town Hall Meeting and lunch on 8/26, right after church. There are several important issues we need to hear:

  1. The Elder Nominating Committee will present their recommendations for Ruling Elders for the class of 2014.
  2. There is a recommendation from the Session to extend the term of the 2012 Class of Elders for 1 year.  We are in a time of transition. With my sabbatical leave in the summer of 2013, we need a strong Session during that time.
  3. There is a recommendation from the Session to elect 2 classes of at least 5 Deacons each (up to 10 total) to help in caring for the congregation and to share the work load.
  4. There is a report from the Denominational Relations Committee about their work to date.

Thank you to the 5th Quarter team for putting on a terrific Trivia Night & Silent Auction fundraiser.  Because of their efforts and your generous support the event raised over $3,500.  Thank you to everyone who helped and participated in the silent auction, not to mention the amazing food provided by Patricia Gray.  Great Job Team!

God is GOOD!  ALL the time!

Your pastor and friend...

This Week's Devotional
This Week's Devotional

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20 NIV)

When Jesus commands us to do something, he knows we can't do it unless we're empowered by him. So, through the Holy Spirit, he joins his life with ours; thus, "Christ lives in me."

This new life takes us where we could never go ourselves. God transforms us by the life of Christ within us, and so we "live and move and have our being" energized by being in Christ (Acts 17:28 NIV).

No matter how hard we try, some days sheer willpower isn't enough to move us closer to where God wants us to be. And so we try harder, and things just get worse.

This is God driving us away from "try harder" Christianity. It is God teaching us, "Not I, but Christ."

We begin to see it is no longer "just I" doing the work. We learn to say in faith: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20 NIV).

Talk About It

  • Our confidence is not in our ability but in God's ability. Discuss ways that God works through us internally and externally to build our faith in him.
  • How would things change in your life if you traded self-confidence for God confidence?

This Weeks Funnies

Late one night, an airhead saw a sign on an office building. It said: "Press bell for night watchman." So the airhead pressed the bell.

After several minutes the night watchman could be heard clomping down the stairs. He unlocked the gate, shut down the alarm system, and finally made his way through the revolving door.

"Well," he snarled at the airhead, "what do you want?"

"I just wanted to know why you can't press the bell yourself."

When I was little, my dad had me convinced the ice cream truck only played music when it was sold out. Well played, dad, well played.

"It's exciting to live in complete oneness with the will of God. It is never dull or static because it is not a one-time, once-for-all commitment. It is something we have to work at constantly, moment by moment." - Evelyn Christenson

Is Your "Rememberer" Going?
A
retired husband gets up from his chair.  His wife asks, "Where are you going?"  He responds, "To the kitchen"   She asks, " Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"

The husband says, "Sure."   She gently reminds him, "Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?"   He says, "No, I can remember that!"   She then says, "Well, I'd like some strawberries on top. You'd better write it down 'cause I know you'll forget it."   He says, "I can remember that! You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries."   She adds, "I'd also like whipped cream. Now I'm certain you'll forget that, so you'd better write it down."

Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down! I can remember that!   Ice cream with strawberries! And whipped cream!" He then grumbles into the kitchen.

After about 20 minutes the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs.   She stares at the plate for a moment and says, "Where's my toast?"

Pancakes

Mary offered to care for the eight-year-old daughter of
neighbors who were going away for the weekend.

On the Saturday morning, she made breakfast, laying a generous helping of bacon and eggs in front of the child.

"Mummy always serves hot pancakes for breakfast," said
the eight-year-old.

So Mary, very eager to oblige, hurried into the kitchen
and quickly prepared a plate of hot pancakes, which she
laid in front of the girl.

"No, thank you," she said.

"But I thought you said your mother always has hot
pancakes for breakfast!" said Mary in surprise.

"She does," said the youngster. "But I don't eat them!"
