  • Cathy Settle - she is a teller at Bank of America
  • Michael Streebing - he works for M.A. Solutions, Inc.

We are having a church wide Congregational Town Hall Meeting and lunch on 8/26, right after church. There are several important issues we need to discuss:

  1. The Elder Nominating Committee will present their recommendations for Ruling Elders for the class of 2014.
  2. There is a recommendation from the Session to extend the term of the 2012 Class of Elders for 1 year.  We are in a time of transition. With my sabbatical leave in the summer of 2013, we need a strong Session during that time.
  3. There is a recommendation from the Session to elect 2 classes of at least 5 Deacons each (up to 10 total) to help in caring for the congregation and to share the work load.
  4. There is a report from the Denominational Relations Committee about their work to date.

If you have any questions or comments about any of these issues please write them on your Yellow Welcome Card at worship or e-mail them to Sara Dryden by noon on 08/21 BEFORE the meeting.  We will not be taking any questions from the floor at the meeting.

This is the last week that the Elder Nominating Committee will be accepting nominations to the office of Elder.  If you would like to nominate someone, please go over the following criteria, fill out a nomination form, and turn it into the church office. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday 8/15 at noon.

Ruling Elder Criteria - Believing that Ruling Elders work with the Pastor(s) and staff to offer spiritual leadership and direction to the church, Ruling Elders will:

  1. Be an active member of our congregation.
  2. Have regular attendance in Worship.
  3. Display a willingness to serve with a servant's heart.
  4. Be a regular and generous financial supporter of FIPC. (Elders are expected to tithe)
  5. Be a committed disciple who is involved in a Small Group or regular Bible Study.
  6. Be a team player.
  7. Have successfully completed our Christian Growth Classes. (1st, 2nd, 3rd, & Home Plate)
  8. From: FIPC's Standard Operating Procedures "Those who are called to office in the church are to lead a life in obedience to Scripture and in conformity to the historic confessional standards of the church. Among these standards is the requirement to live either in fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness. Persons refusing to repent of any self-acknowledged practice which the confessions call sin shall not be ordained and/or installed as deacons, elders, or ministers of the Word and Sacrament."
  9. Have successfully completed all Elder Training. (Offered after the election)
  10. Will sign and follow all Leadership Covenants. (Signed after the Elder Training)

Each applicant will be evaluated by the Nomination Committee and a suggested slate of nominees will be brought to the congregation for vote on 08/26.

God is GOOD!  ALL the time!

This Week's Devotional
This Week's Devotional

"Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what the nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." (Romans 8:5 NIV)

There is a battle going on inside you between your old, sinful nature and your new nature that comes from Christ. If you want to win this battle, you're going to have to change the way you think.

Why? The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel determines the way you act. If you act depressed, it's because you feel depressed. And if you feel depressed, it's because you're thinking depressing thoughts. If you want to get out of that depression or whatever issue you're struggling with, you need to ask the Holy Spirit to give you better thoughts.

Satan gives you thoughts; they are temptation. And God gives you thoughts; they are inspiration. Which are you going to choose? Romans 8:6 says, "The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace" (NIV).

I don't know anyone who wouldn't choose life and peace over death. But, the truth is, you have self-destructive thoughts all the time. So what do you do?

Here is how the Holy Spirit frees me from uncontrolled thoughts. It's the principle of replacement: Whatever you want to change in your life, don't resist it; replace it.

If you're watching television and a show comes on that you know is bad for you to watch, change the channel to something better. If you want to quit smoking but you keep thinking about cigarettes, focus on something else. The Bible says you have to replace the old mindset with the new mindset.

When you start thinking about something positive instead of something negative, something good instead of something evil, the old will lose its appeal and won't have its allure anymore.

Invite the Holy Spirit to have free access to your mind to help replace those uncontrollable thoughts.

Talk About It

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to give you new ideas to think about that will replace the old, bad thoughts. Pray this: "Dear Holy Spirit, I give you permission to give me thoughts any time you want. I'm wide open, and I will accept them. I have an open mind to you."
  • The Holy Spirit will also use Scripture to direct your thoughts toward the holy God. If you're not already, begin memorizing Scripture today with a friend so that you can remember God's Word when you need it most.

This Weeks Funnies

A doctor, a civil engineer, and a computer scientist were sitting around late one evening, and they got to discussing which was the oldest profession.

The doctor pointed out that according to biblical tradition, God created Eve from Adam's rib. This obviously required surgery, so therefore that was the oldest profession in the world.

The engineer countered with an earlier passage in the Bible that stated that God created order from the chaos, and that was most certainly the biggest and best civil engineering example ever, and also proved that his profession was the oldest profession.

The computer scientist leaned back in her chair, and with a sly smile responded, "Yes, but who do you think created the chaos?"

A man complains to a friend, "I can't take it anymore."
"What's wrong?" his concerned friend asks.      "It's my wife. Every time we have an argument, she gets historical!"      "You mean hysterical," his friend said, chuckling.
"No, I mean HISTORICAL," the man insists. "Every argument we have, she'll go "I still remember that time when you ...."

I was talking with my pastor about his habit of starting church services late. I mentioned that in my years with the Air Force, when the general scheduled us to take off at 0700 hours, he didn't mean 0705 or 0710.

The pastor looked at me and said, "My general outranks your general."

"It is not because things are good that we are to thank the Lord, but because He is good."

Don't be upset that rosebushes have thorns; rejoice that thorn bushes have roses.

THE PRODIGAL SON RETOLD IN THE KEY OF "F" - Feeling footloose, fancy-free and frisky, this feather-brained fellow finagled his fond father into forking over his fortune. Forthwith, he fled for foreign fields and frittered his farthings feasting fabulously with fair-weathered friends.

Finally, facing famine, and fleeced by his fellows in folly, he found himself a feed flinger in a filthy farmlot. He fain would have filled his frame with foraged food from the fodder fragments.

"Fooey! My father's flunkies fare far fancier" the frazzled fugitive fumed feverishly, frankly facing fact.

Frustrated from failure and filled with forebodings, he fled for his family. Falling at his father's feet, he floundered forlornly. "Father, I have flunked and fruitlessly forfeited further family favors."

But the faithful father, forestalling further flinching, frantically flagged his flunkies to set forth the finest fatling and fix a feast.

The fugitive's fault-finding frater, faithfully farming his father's fields for free, frowned at this fickle forgiveness of formal falderal. His fury flashed, but fussing was futile.

His foresighted father figured, "Such filial fidelity is fine, but what forbids fervent festivities? The fugitive is found! Unfurl the flags! With fanfare flaring, let fun, frolic and frivolity flow freely, former failures forgotten and folly forsaken. Forgiveness forms a firm foundation for future fortitude."
