Issue 25 Volume 10  - Week of June 17, 2012

From Pastor Jim

Dear Friends,

Step Up Youth Mission Camp was a huge success! 38 of our children and youth and 11 of our adult leaders involved with making a difference right here in our local area.  During the week, they focused on helping out with local mission organizations; Heart for Homeless of Clay County, The Mercy Network, Green Cove Springs Food Pantry, and Sea-Mark Ranch.

This week, we our K through 5th graders are at Kids Camp at Camp Montgomery and Conference Center.  Keep them in your prayers.

God is GOOD!  ALL the time!
Your pastor and friend...

 Judge Rightly

by

After a national news magazine posted an online story listing my community as one of the top-10 dying cities in the nation, local citizens were outraged. They registered their indignation, pointing out evidence to the contrary. One resident went to great lengths to disprove the harsh judgment. He recruited local citizens to show up downtown and appear in a video that showcased the vibrancy of our community. The video received international attention, and the news magazine admitted it was wrong. But the organization that had done the "research" stood by the conclusion, even though it was based on limited criteria.

Their self-defense surprised me because their careless conclusion seemed indefensible. But then I thought of how common it is to make faulty judgments based on minimal information. One of the classic biblical examples is that of Job's friends. They wrongly concluded that because a series of tragedies happened to him, Job had sinned.

In the end, God defended Job and offered a startling conclusion. He didn't rebuke his friends for judging Job but for speaking falsely about Himself (Job 42:7). This is a humbling reminder that when we make careless judgments about others, we are sinning against God.

Lord, please restrain my lips when I'm tempted to say what I shouldn't say about people made in Your image. Use my words to bless and not harm.

May I reflect Your heart.
If you are a Christian, remember that people judge your Lord by you.

This Weeks Funnies

Fitness - I was walking to lunch with my friend Tristan and discussing the need to start an exercise program. A mutual friend, Chris, joined us on the walk and after listening to Tristan and I talk about fitness, Chris said, "I'm exercising every day."

"You're exercising?" we asked. "Daily?"

"Yeah!" he replied. "I swim after work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. And I run on Tuesdays and Thursdays."

We stopped walking, and I asked Chris, "How long have you been doing this?"

"Oh, I don't start until next week!" he replied

Tax day - April 15 - was looming when an elderly
woman showed up at my desk at the IRS. She said
she required a thick stack of tax forms.

"Why so many?" I asked.

"My son is stationed overseas," she said. "He asked
me to pick up forms for the soldiers on the base."

"You shouldn't have to do this," I told her. "It's
the base commander's job to make sure that his troops
have access to the forms they need."

"I know," said the woman. "I'm the base commander's
mother."

Prayer is not asking for what you think you want,
but asking to be changed in ways you can't imagine.

A cantor, the man who sings the prayers at a synagogue, brags before his congregation in a booming, bellowing voice: "Two years ago I insured my voice with Lloyds of London for $750,000."

There is a hushed and awed silence in the crowded room. Suddenly, from the back of the room, the quiet, nasal voice of an elderly woman is heard, "So what did you do with the money?
