FOOD SHARE AND SCHOOL ON WHEELS, INC. ARE PARTNERING TO DISTRIBUTE HEALTHY SNACKS TO LOCAL HOMELESS STUDENTS
MEDIA ALERT - For Immediate Release
WHAT: School on Wheels and FoodShare have been working together to provide healthy snacks to homeless students throughout Ventura County. Every year, School on Wheels distributes backpacks filled with school supplies and now they contain a juicebox and snacks too! The snacks are provided by FoodShare's Snack Attack program and every week nearly 100 students benefit from having a healthy snack before their tutoring session with a School on Wheels tutor. Even though schools are on summer break, School on Wheels tutors' work every week with their students to help them fill in the gaps that often occur from frequent school moves as a result of being homeless.
WHO: School on Wheels tutors are volunteers who are trained and matched with a homeless student (a student living in a shelter, motel, car, or the street or in a group foster home). They meet every week in a public place and spend an hour or so focusing on learning and education.
FOOD Share supplies healthy after-school and summer program snacks to an
average of 2,200 children a day at 18 Snack Attack sites countywide.
