Greetings!
When it comes to adversity, you're either right in the middle of it, just coming out of it, or getting ready to face it.

What kind of strategy do you have to not just get through those challenges, but do it well? If you have never created an "Adversity Plan," don't wait. You can do it this coming week -- on June 7 -- at the Spiritually Healthy Leader workshop, Finishing Well. Register now!

In this issue of The Cultivator, we'll finish up our series on identifying values by answering this thought-provoking question: Do your core values change over time, or do they remain constant? Read about it in this issue's feature, Identifying Your Values (Part 3).

FINISHING WELL:
Fight the Good Fight, Walk Worthy, and Finish Well
The question is not whether or not you will face adversity.

rock-climbingBut rather, have you prepared for it? Have you created an intentional plan to avoid or manage personal pitfalls and roadblocks that might come your way?

During June's Spiritually Healthy Leader workshop, Finishing Well, you'll learn how to identify dangers Christ-followers face.

You'll also develop a personal strategy to steer clear of them, recover from them, and bring about restoration when failures intersect your life.

The workshops are not closed small groups. Registration is OPEN. Best of all, the series is flexible. You can select one or all or a combination throughout 2012.

Consider bringing your ministry team to the Finishing Well workshop on June 7. Learn more about SHL WorkshopsRegister now.

Do Values Change Over Time?
Kayla paused as she removed the last picture from the office wall for her move to the suite upstairs. The photo of her and her college friends on graduation day was ten years old.

I've changed so much, Kayla thought. Back then, she was only interested in passing classes and getting the frat guys to look at her. If she'd given any thought to her values, she would have labeled them "fun" and "attention."

In the intervening decade Kayla had worked hard and earned two promotions. But most importantly, she had become a Christian. Today, she was concerned about how to invest her skills to help others and in developing significant, genuine relationships. Intentionality and authenticity were among her closely-held values.

Kayla understood an important principle about her values: they had changed over time.

Beliefs influence your values
A Christ-follower's salvation experience and ongoing relationship with God have the greatest influence in the development of her current set of values. Adopting Christ-centered values produces a higher standard of excellence. Biblical values provide the true measure to use when judging between right and wrong, good and bad, and how things should be. They form a bedrock upon which we can live with purpose.

Values also change as we grow
As time passes, do a Christ-follower's values continue to change? If you asked Kayla, she would say yes. One of the main reasons she sought out her newest job in the suite upstairs was to act on the core value of replication. Her responsibilities would require her to invest in the company's up-and-coming young leaders and multiply herself.  She had identified one of her new core values - replication - while her current set grew deeper and more focused.

Kayla took a final glance around the room and noticed the last remaining item - her wall calendar. As she set it in the moving box, she chuckled. It would be fun to see how God deepened her current values even further over the next ten years.

Prayer Points

  • Take an inventory of how your values changed from before you were a Christ-follower to now.
  • How do your current values influence how you make decisions?
  • How might God be stretching you to deepen or add to your current values?
