Dear Friends,

As summer starts to make its retreat it has been all about connections here at NH Children's Trust. We were given an opportunity to be a part of an important crossroads of two of our prime initiatives. The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome, developers of the Period of PURPLE Crying infant abuse prevention program, and the Center for the Study of Social Policy, developers of the Strengthening Families Framework invited us to be a part of their "Making the Link" document.

The flyer describes how the Period of PURPLE Crying promotes the protective factors described in the Strengthening Families Framework. "Making the Link" also includes a narrative, which details how both of these initiatives are interwoven in the work of New Hampshire Children's Trust. It was a great opportunity to share our work with national partners.

We have also been connecting with the creators of over 2,000 hats pledged to NH's CLICK for Babies campaign. This was a great opportunity to not only to raise awareness about the Period of PURPLE Crying but also the work of NH Children's Trust. Read more in this newsletter!

Child care professionals and other people who work with young children are connecting with us this month as we make on-line training in the protective factors available. Over 100 NH professionals have signed on to this training. Read more about this training designed by the National Alliance of Children's Trust and Prevention Funds.

Save the date for our second annual Strengthening Families Summit: Moving Theory to Practice to be held March 18, 2013. This gathering of 300 professionals who work in any capacity with young children and families will be an important opportunity to put the protective factors framework inot practice with the children and families they work with. Strengthening Families & Period of PURPLE Crying

Period of PURPLE Crying
Our ad in Parenting NH Magazine
Period of PURPLE Crying
program is an evidence-based intervention shown to change how parents understand early infant crying and how they respond to the frustration associated with that crying. Parents receive program materials - generally in the hospital at the time of birth. They are also provided with guidance from a trained professional, often a nurse.

The Period of PURPLE Crying program approach is consistent with Strengthening Families efforts and serves to build the protective factors. Click for more information from the Center for the Study of Social Policy about Making the Link.

CLICK for Babies display

CLICKCLICK for Babies: Period of PURPLE Crying caps is a grassroots campaign inviting knitters and crocheters across North America to make purple colored baby caps.

Caps will be given to families delivering infants in 11 NH hospitals in November and December as part of their Period of PURPLE Crying program.

This evidence-based program educates parents about normal infant crying, ways to cope with the crying and the dangers of reacting in frustration by shaking or abusing an infant.

Purple caps will serve as a reminder to new parents to consult the DVD and booklet they received in the hospital once they return home. Read more about the response to the campaign in NH here.
