Dear Friends,
Keryn

I hope this is a Happy New Year for you!  For too many children, however, it will not be a happy year.  Abuse and neglect is still happening to children in our state and it is our responsibility to do something about it.  One of the ways you can get involved is by raising funds to support our mission of preventing child abuse and neglect so that all NH children thrive in safe, stable and nurturing families and communities.

One Rye woman is doing just that. Beginning 2011 with the creation of a "Bucket List", one of her goals was to raise $10,000 to support the prevention of child abuse and neglect.  You can read her story below and make a donation to the New Hampshire Children's Trust attention: Brenda's Bucket List.  All of your donations will stay in NH and leverage additional dollars through our Federal contract for community-based child abuse prevention.

If preventing child abuse and neglect is important to you, you could also raise funds for the cause.  We have had many individuals and groups do just that over the years.  For example, we have had individuals request donations be made to NH Children's Trust:

  • in lieu of birthday, mother's day, father's day and Christmas gifts;
  • by playing softball at the Snow Much Fun winter tournament;
  • through hosting parties and request donations be made to support prevention.
  • through employee giving campaign lists or employer matching gifts.

There have been businesses and groups who have also supported our cause.  The Riverworks Tavern, Bolocos, and the Governor's Inn gave a percent of sales; BG's Boathouse donated the proceeds from Cookie sales; Kappa Delta Alpha Sigma Sorority at UNH annually holds an event to raise funds, and High School service clubs have had donation drives.  Some employers groups have "Jean Days" at work where employees get to wear jeans if they make a donation.

There are many ways to get creative in your involvement in child abuse and neglect prevention.  If you have a passion for keeping children safe and want to get involved, contact us so we can support you in your efforts.

Stay safe and warm,

Keryn

When 2011 rang in, I, like most, immediately began to come up with my annual New Years resolution.  I tried to remember the past few resolutions I had made and shook my head.  Could I even remember them?...As you can imagine, sitting down to make this New Year's resolution was like looking down a dark hallway to imminent failure...

This New Year, in lieu of one resolution, I decided to create a list of things that I have always wanted to do in my life.  Items that enhance who I am in some way or another rather than what I look like or what bad habit I wanted to stop.   So, I  began to write, without thought, the things I would like to do before I die. This was the birth of my Bucket List.

On the very top of my list, I had written:  I want to raise $10,000 for an organization that helps children at risk of abuse and neglect.  Here I am, doing what I can to make this happen, to put a check next to the first item on my Bucket List.

Through research, I located a local non-profit organization that does much of what I believe can assist in the battle of preventing child abuse and neglect.  The organization is called The New Hampshire Children's Trust.  I was most drawn to their approach in terms of prevention.  Much of what they do focuses on the family unit at risk and the demographics in most need of services to prevent child abuse.  They focus on abuse and neglect  before it happens.  They do this by identifying risk factors, who and where these factors are most prevelent in our state, and working with those area organizations to facilitate programs based on the needs of those families.

NH Children's Trust is the only non-profit organization in New Hampshire who's primary focus is on preventing abuse and neglect before it happens.  Being a victim of child abuse myself, I have to wonder if my early life would have been different had there been such an organization at that time.  In my heart, I believe that it  would have been different.  So that is my story.  That is why I am doing what I am doing.  I want to be part of preventing such tragedy from happening to innocent children.

The truth is, I can't do this alone and I need your help.  As little or as much as you can give will help me reach my goal!  Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children in our communities.  Child abuse is more common than we want to admit and I can guarantee that when you are in the park, at the grocery store, out to dinner, there is a child within sight that laughs on the outside, but the truth is, they are broken or at risk of being broken on the inside.  TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS!
