Concord NH: The Board of Trustees of the NH Children's Trust Fund announces the award of $150,000 in contracts to 17 NH-based organizations providing services to families for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Funded organizations may be continuing services, establishing new services or extending services to underserved areas, but all services work toward the goal of 'keeping children safe and families strong.' These awards are made possible through the federal Community Based Child Abuse Prevention grant and through contributions from individuals and groups, including the State Employees Charitable Campaign (code: 7111) and the Combined Federal Campaign (code: 95517).
Every day children are innocent victims of child abuse. In 2009, the NH Division for Children, Youth and Families Central Intake Office investigated 7,880 reports of suspected in the home child abuse or neglect. Of these, 942 children were found to be victims of substantiated child abuse or neglect. Isn't it time we said "Enough!"? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children who are victims of child abuse are more likely to engage in risky behaviors as teens, perform criminal acts, engage in violence and they are more likely to acquire chronic diseases and die early. This costs our society both socially and economically.
In 2009, programs receiving funding from the NH Children's Trust Fund reported serving a total of 5,534 children and 4,365 parents in New Hampshire. Many communities in New Hampshire have family support programs or family resource centers available to help parents develop parenting skills, connect with other families and access supports and services to provide healthy and stable environments for their children. Refer to the Family Support New Hampshire network for the one nearest you. Participate, volunteer, donate and refer families that you know. All children deserve to be protected and nurtured so that they may develop into successful caring adults.
