April 2010 is Strengthening Families and Communities Month |
"The Strength of Families and Communities: It's your turn!" Alyssa Azotea, MS The spring is a time of renewal, a time to breathe the fresh air and remember how changes are possible. My focus for the past few months has been on the strength of families and communities, as a preventative measure against child abuse and neglect. I concentrated on NH families and communities, and met many passionate and inspiring individuals! Qualitative study As part of this campaign, I have conducted a State-wide Qualitative Study, focusing on what makes families and communities strong and self-reliant and what factors hinder the strength of families and communities. There were 56 participants, some who joined me for focus groups, and others who submitted anonymous questionnaires. Thank you to the following organizations for their willingness to hold focus groups. Family Resource Center in Gorham Families First in Portsmouth Dame School in Concord NH Taskforce on Women and Recovery in Manchester HUB Family Resource Center in Dover Overall, the study indicated that individuals within NH find strength in families and communities where there is open communication, honesty, and quality time spent together. There is an obvious need for resource centers, and activities that are affordable, as well as child and family friendly. The full study will be available soon!
