Greetings! It's already a tall order to find homes for adult cats in our community. But for those who are diagnosed with a disease that many people think is nothing but "bad news"....the wait can be interminable. | | Sinatra |
That's the story for a number of kitties at the Sonoma Humane Society who've been diagnosed with FIV, a virus similar to the HIV virus that affects humans. FIV positive kitties are often overlooked by potential adopters because of their special | | Buddy |
adoption requirements; they need to be only cat in the home (or live with another FIV+ cat), they must live an indoors only and receive regular check-ups with a Veterinarian to monitor for any opportunistic infections. FIV+ cats can, and do, live long and relatively normal lives. Most importantly, they provide incredible love and affection for their companions! We believe they deserve a chance for a loving home. | Snoopy and Tux
|
Today we have 5 wonderful FIV positive kitties who would love to be adopted by someone who understands them, including a bonded pair of Tuxedo kitties, Snoopy and Tux. If you think you might be interested, please contact our adoption | | Bagheera | counselors at the Sonoma Humane Society who can help facilitate your "meet and greet" and answer any questions you might have. | SPECIAL FACES
Too long a journey...
I'm trying to keep a positive attitude, but I've been waiting for so long. I don't know why but I've watched many other lucky canines walk by my temporary home here at the Sonoma Humane Society. They've found homes, and I'm still here. While everyone at the shelter has been loving and supportive, I really need YOU to come take me home. I'm only 4-years-old and have lots of love and life to give. While I don't much care for other dogs I love humans and would give anything to find my forever home. Please, if you can't adopt me tell at least one other person about me and ask them to do the same....
Throw me a bone!
I'm Ernie and I'm only 7-months-old but I've been around long enough to see how hard life can be. Left in a foreclosed home without food and water for weeks, my sister and I ended up in a shelter hoping for adoption. She was chosen but I was not. You see, I was born with one leg shorter than the other due to a problem during my bones' growth. People looked at me a little funny but I was able to get around just fine. Regardless, I was an outcast and I was facing euthanasia. That's when Dr. Camblor at the Sonoma Humane Society visited me and saw my potential. She brought me to the Sonoma Humane Society where she enlisted the help of an orthopedic surgeon and I underwent a bone lengthening procedure! I am healing well and trying really hard not to wiggle too much when I go out for walks...I'm just so excited about my future. I hope to be ready for my forever home early next week and my wish list is short: someone who will let me be a puppy and run and play and run and play...did I mention run? Oh, I'll make time for scratches too!

Missing Missy.

Missy
|
My name is Missy and in May I went missing. How did this happen? When I was adopted 3 years ago at the Rohnert Park Shelter, they put something called a microchip under my skin. This little device helps identify who my owners are, so that I can be returned to them if I ever get lost. But when a good Samaritan found me and brought me to the Sonoma Humane Society, my microchip didn't help me! My owners hadn't updated their contact information no one knew where I belonged. I was terrified when I heard that I would be placed for adoption again, fearing that no one could love me like my

own family had. And then a miracle happened. My family, who had grieved for me for three months, decided to open their hearts to another homeless feline. They came to the Sonoma Humane Society and took one look at me and said, "That's our Missy!" We both want to remind you of the importance of these little microchips so please make sure your information is up to date in case your loved one goes missing! Lily has bloomed!
Lily one day after surgery...still smiling.
| I was found wandering the streets and brought to the Sonoma Humane Society in early July. When I arrived I was extremely thin, covered in ticks and had a very old, chronic eye injury that had gone a long time without treatment. What's more - I was heartworm positive. Being brought to the Sonoma Humane Society was the first lucky break I'd had in many, many months. My medical care began immediately and I was given lots of good nutrition and tender loving care. I underwent treatment for heartworm disease, my parasites were removed and I had surgery on my badly injured eye. Before I knew it, I found a loving foster home where I could rest and recover. | | Lily enjoying life in her new home. |
Now for my happy ending: I feel like a healthy, beautiful dog and though my journey through life hasn't been easy, my future is now bright with promise. I've bounced back from adversity and blossomed in the care of my foster "mom" who has decided she just can't let me go!! I've been adopted! Together forever...at last.
Daisy and Colby.
|
The Sonoma Humane Society gave us the love and support we needed and let us cling to each other understanding the 8-year bond we share. We waited patiently watching staff and volunteers pass by giving us words of encouragement and loving caresses. We knew that it was a lot to hope for. Then a mother and her two children came by and understood our need to stay together. With 2 acres to play in and a loving family of our own, Daisy and I are forever grateful! |

Foster Parents Needed
Another wave of kittens has arrived at the Sonoma Humane Society
Through the entire March-to-October breeding season, Sonoma County is "littered" with unwanted kittens, many of whom are left in boxes on our doorstep or brought here by compassionate souls who've found an abandoned litter. Without our wonderful Foster Parents, these little newborns would perish.
If you can help to support them through a donation - now is the time to come forward. Please donate online or call 707-577-1903 today.
Foster parents are also desperately needed. Last year our Foster program saved the lives of more than 500 kittens and puppies. During peak season, as we are right now, care givers are needed for many litters who have no Mother. These kittens are dependent upon the kindness and support of human guardians.
To become a foster parent, please contact Aiko Love: email: alove@sonomahumane.org,
phone: 707-577-1919, or attend one of our upcoming foster orientations.

TELL YOU FRIENDS!
SpayPAL: Low Cost Cat Spay/Neuter program for Sonoma County residents.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Salatko Animal Welfare Fund of Community Foundation Sonoma County, we are now able to offer low cost services. All cat spay/neuter surgeries are just $30 and include a free rabies vaccine. Surgeries are offered by appointment at the Sonoma Humane Society's Spay/Neuter Clinic.
Please remember, spaying or neutering your cat has many benefits including reduction of unwanted births and the influence of hormones on your pet's behavior. Unspayed and unneutered cats are responsible for hundreds of unwanted and abandoned kittens every year. Some of these animals find homes but many more end up in shelters, or on the street, where they face a very uncertain future. By spaying or neutering your cat, you do your part to prevent feline over-population and suffering.
Please call (800) 427-7973 to schedule your appointment and help us spread the word!

TIPS
Microchipping : Your Pet's Ticket Home!
| |
If I were a superhero I would fly home but a microchip might be a good backup!
|
Microchipping your pet can be a lifesaver when your animal gets lost. A tiny chip (about the size of a grain of rice) is inserted under the skin usually at the top of the neck area - a very, quick, simple and relatively painless procedure (just like a shot). The chip is bar-coded with a number that can be detected using a microchip scanner. Every shelter in the United States and many across the world use these scanners and many veterinarians do too. If a chip is found, the number is input into an online database which provides the owner's contact information. The owner can then be contacted and reunited with their loved one. Combined with a collar and tag, this is one of the most effective methods to reunite owners with their lost or stolen pets. Don't wait - get your pet microchipped today and help avoid the trauma of losing a loved one.
ALERT! If your pets are microchipped make sure you update your information if you've changed phone numbers or moved.
Microchips can be administered at any of the above Vaccine & Viral Testing Clinics Cost: $27.00
