ONLY SKIN DEEP
Beauty is only skin deep...never judge a book by it cover... words that applied to this sweet girl when she arrived looking, well, pretty rough around the edges. We can all learn from this wonderful pit bull who came to us with just a glimmer of sparkle left in her eyes and a very upsetting appearance. A terrible case of mange and bacterial diseases had left her with very little fur. Her ears were so infectedthat they were bleeding. And, because she had recently given birth, her mammary glands were swollen and infected, too. Yet, even in this state of extreme discomfort, we could see the real "Tink" behind the shroud of sadness in her eyes. Our dedicated staff and volunteers provided her with the round-the-clock care that she needed; warm baths, compresses and medication. Today, Tinkerbell is well on her way to a full recovery and she begs to shed some light on what it means to be a pit bull. She'd like to help dispel the myths surrounding her breed. Myths>>> Take some time to read about the pit bull breed and then call us to make an appointment to visit with Tink. She wants to be your faithful companion and she'll soon be ready to put you under her spell. PS. Tinkerbell's treatment was made possible through donations to the Sonoma Humane Society's Angels Fund. Greetings!
Giving thanks is a daily part of our routine at the Sonoma Humane Society. Each day we are grateful for the support of our donors, adopters and volunteers - each of whom makes our life-saving work possible. However, especially during this season of giving, we just can't say thank you enough! If you're getting this email, it's because you are in important part of our community. With your help, close to 1400 animals have found their forever homes this year. We are never happier than when an animal is united with a new a loving family. And, in celebration of our 80th Anniversary in 2011, many donors supported our "Celebrate 80 - Donate $80" campaign. With each $80 donation, we were able to feed our entire shelter for a day. So far these donations have provided more than 3 months of breakfasts and dinners - that's a lot of full tummies! Of course, all year long it is our volunteers who help make sure all the work gets done. They are the loving workforce behind all that we do; from cuddling cats, to providing in-home foster care, and cleaning kennels - their commitment makes our world go around. On behalf of the animals whose lives you've touched and the many animals spending Thanksgiving at our shelter - Thank You!
Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

HAPPY TAILS A King is Crowned
Benny, a 6 year-old Chow -Golden Retriever Mix has found his throne. He rode into the sunset with a family who had adopted from the Sonoma Humane Society years ago. When their beloved pet passed away recently, they came back to us in hopes of finding a successor. Lucky for Benny, he fit the bill perfectly and is now living a life of royalty as the new king of the household.
A Spirited Story! At almost 2 years-old Bella needed to find a home where she could have structure, consistency, training and a lot of exercise. After all, "a tried dog is a good dog"! An ex-employee of the Sonoma Humane Society was able give Bella her wings of freedom as she now resides in Monte Rio with lots of room to romp and play.
Once a Diva, Always a Diva
Abigail came to the Sonoma Humane Society in need of surgery on her knees for a condition called "luxating patellas". After a successful orthopedic surgery she's fully recovered and is thankful to have found her starring role. Abigail strutted out of our facility, head held high, attached at the hip with her new owners. We hope she'll remember us! |

Look at the Kitten in the Window
Who isn't drawn to the cute little kittens in the pet store window? It's human nature to gravitate to these cute little balls of energy but take a minute to meet some of the teens and older cats here at the Sonoma Humane Society. Consider that you just might be their last chance to have the love and warmth of a home where they can live out their years in comfort. Typically, they are active, playful and thankful! Some may need a little extra patience while adjusting to a new home, but once they feel safe and secure again, most will give you years of faithful companionship and unconditional love. Please ask about the following cats who have watched their friends and family be adopted while patiently waiting their turn. Ask to meet one of these amazing felines; Skittles, T.O., Charlotte, Abigail, Eva, Tessie, or Bitsy.

WE'D LIKE YOU TO MEET...
Sparky...
A Star in the Making
Sometimes the stars align and set off a chain reaction of events ...Sparky is the lucky recipient of a team effort between Sonoma County Animal Care and Control and the Sonoma Humane Society. When he arrived at SCACC, Sparky immediately went into surgery to repair a broken leg. But when he needed a place to recover long-term, the county shelter contacted the Sonoma Humane Society for help. Sparky received recovery care and a second corrective surgery at the Humane Society. For this high-energy 2-year-old Chihuahua, part of his rehabilitation included working with our Training and Behavior team. Today we are happy to report that his leg is healed and he's ready to put on a show! He'll need an experienced owner and some training reinforcement but this little bundle of talent is waiting to be discovered!
Sassy
A spirited girl no doubt, this 4 year-old German Shepherd mix loves people and will make just about anyone smile. An experienced owner (who knows how to handle a little attitude) will keep Sassy in line. Sassy is ready to do her job as your dedicated companion and is looking for a home where she won't have to share you with other dogs. She does suffer from a skin condition that can be controlled with the proper diet. Did you know that the Sonoma Humane Society provides special dietary food "at cost" when you adopt an animal with a condition like Sassy's? Snoopy
Snoopy. An indoor cat he'll be, but just between you and me....Snoopy likes to be a part of all your household "chores". Reading the paper? He'll hold down the pages. Watching TV? He'll be your lap warmer. After all he's here to help you relax. As an FIV positive kitty, Snoopy cannot "hang around" other cats but he can certainly adorn your home! Pet Guardianship - Loving for Life
Have you ever wondered, "Who will care for my pet after I'm gone?" Not everyone has a friend or family member who is able to assume responsibility for the care of their pet. Recognizing that companion animals are a vital part of our family, the Sonoma Humane Society established a Pet Guardianship program called Loving for Life. Under this program, members leave instructions in their Wills that their pets will be bequeathed to the Sonoma Humane Society. The Humane Society will provide for the pet's unique needs, including medical care, and will find a loving lifetime home. Meet Woofgang and Corky,
two recent arriv als who were entrusted to the Sonoma Humane Society when their owner passed away unexpectedly. They are "attached at the hip" and still reeling from the loss of their human father, who left specific instructions that they find a home together. Our Training staff is working with them to help make this transition less stressful. Both Woofgang and Corky are looking for a strong male figure to stand by their sides and a place to feel as loved and as safe as they did just weeks ago. |

TRAINER'S CORNER
Tips and Tricks from our Behavior and Training Guru's As the Thanksgiving fare adorns the dinner table even the most well behaved pet can forget training quickly. Here are a few things you can do to keep your pet safe during the festivities. First feed them before your guests arrive removing any temptation to "steal" food or beg. Best practice would be to put them in another room away from guests with a special treat of their own! It may seem harmless but here are some of the dangers that lurk on your countertops during this festive time of year. - Cooked bones can splinter and cause tears or obstruction in a pet's digestive tract.
- Baking strings, can create trouble if ingested by your pet.
- Onions in holiday stuffing can lead to canine anemia if consumed by your dog.
- Grapes and raisin toxins can cause kidney failure in pets.
- Ingesting chocolate can be deadly.
- Rich, fatty foods (turkey skins, gravy, etc,) can contribute to pancreatitis. This inflammation of the digestive gland is painful and can be serious--requiring emergency veterinary assistance.
- Caffeine and alcohol are also toxic for pets.
