Popsicles, Popcorn and Water - Keeping the Kids Happy, Healthy and Hydrated

It is hard to believe that summer is here and June has quickly passed.  For some of us, these months are a nice break from the daily routine.  For others it may be a challenge keeping our once busy kids occupied with something other than TV or video games.  Getting them outside and active, especially in the heat, can be a constant struggle.  Couple this with an increased request for something to eat and you might see your creativity strained to say the least.

With these challenges in mind, I want to share with you some great new products and ideas for keeping the kids (and you) happy, healthy and hydrated this summer (and beyond).

First and foremost, staying hydrated is foundational to good health and energy.  An increase in outdoor activity, especially in hot weather, increases our need for water, to replace that which is lost through perspiration.   Remember, that water makes up about 65-75% of the body.  It is not only the transport vehicle to bring nutrients into our body's cells but also the mechanism by which toxins and waste are removed from the cells.  Other fluids, such as soda, tea, coffee, or fruit juice (even those without sweetener) can not replace water in its cleansing and re-hydrating functions.

Drinking ½ your body weight in ounces of water daily should be your optimum goal, but may need to be increased if you have been active in the hot outdoors.  Getting you and your children a personal water bottle can help achieve this goal.  For younger children, placing a mark on the bottle showing the amount they need to drink may be helpful.  To wean off soda or other not so healthy drinks, make a habit of getting your water requirement first before consuming other beverages, or at least drink a glass of water as you reach for the soda, tea or juice.  We have several great styles of water bottles to choose from.  My personal favorite is the glass bottle by Lifefactory .  It has a colorful silicon wrapping, making it break resistant and easy to hold.  The screw on lid has a handy carrying handle.  (Check out the glass baby bottles also by Lifefactory.)  Also don't forget our alkalized, ionized bottled water by Historic Springs.

Whenever I teach on the importance of drinking water, I am always asked about sports drinks, especially in the spring and summer months.  The concern of course is replacing important electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, which may be lost due to extensive sweating.  Before you grab that artificially colored, artificially flavored, heavily sugared, and strategically marketed sports drink, allow me to share a few facts.

It takes 216 ounces of the popular sports drinks (that's 1-½ gallons!) to provide as much potassium as 1 banana (that's right - just one).  One banana has only about 200 calories and 27 grams of sugar.  Yet 216 ounces of sports drink has 1350 calories and 378 grams of sugar.  Looking at the facts, it is easy to see that you are better off eating a banana and drinking water to restore electrolytes, than consuming the very unhealthy, high calorie alternative.  Other fresh fruits, such as oranges and blueberries are also naturally high in potassium - so choose your favorite.

So why not pack them off to the pool or other outdoor activity with some sliced oranges and an ice cold bottle of water.  Our cool, new roll-down insulated lunch bags are just the right size and price to let everyone pack their own.  They come in a variety of colors and designs - even camo for the guys! Available in-store only.

Beat the Heat

An ice, cold, frozen popsicle has to be one of the most refreshing treats on a hot summer day.  But even the "all fruit" varieties at the store leave something to be desired.  Why not make your own?

Our new push up style silicon holders allows you to freeze your own from your favorite juice or healthy beverage.  BUT....

What if the kids come in hot and sweaty, ready for a treat and there is none in the freezer...

Then you will LOVE the new ZOKU Popsicle Maker. To enjoy Quick Pops at a moment's notice, simply store the compact base in your freezer.  When you are ready for a frozen popsicle, just remove the unit from the freezer, fill with your favorite mixture and the patented Zoku Quick Pop™ Maker freezes pops in as little as seven minutes right on your countertop without electricity. Quickly make striped pops, yogurt pops or (for the first time ever at home) flavored core pops. The kit includes six durable, reusable plastic pop sticks that have unique ridged designs that allow pops to adhere securely, with special drip guards for tidy eating. A specially designed Super Tool helps to quickly release the frozen treats from their molds. The unit can make up to 9 pops before refreezing the unit again. The Zoku Popsicle Maker includes 1 Quick Pop Maker, 6 sticks, 6 drip guards, and 1 Super Tool.  From simple to exotic - you will love this popsicle maker - it really gets the creative juices flowing.  Optional accessories - recipe book, storage case, extra sticks,  and a handy tool kit for creating lots of fun designs.  I have had a blast with this great system.  Your kids will love it.  My daughter gave this to my 8 year old granddaughter for her June birthday.

Popcorn - Great Whole Grain Nutrition

I am not sure why but snacking and watching TV just seem to go together and sometimes something salty is what we want.  Why not replace those not so healthy chips with some good old fashion popcorn?  Our new Sweet and Easy Popcorn Maker, might be just the trick.  By the makers of the famous Whirley Pop, the Sweet & Easy Snack Machine lets you make perfect popcorn in 1 - 1 ½ minutes, and combine it with candy, nuts, fruits and spices if desired for extra special treats. With the new direct drive stirring mechanism you can even roast your favorite nuts!   With its heavy-duty crank, stainless-steel pan and direct-drive stirring mechanism, Whirley Pop's stove-top popper will work overtime creating lots of family pleasing snacks. The stainless-steel stirrer operates by hand to keep popcorn popping and circulates flavorings without adding extra oil. Just the ticket for movie night at home, The Sweet & Easy Snack Machine adds big-time flavor, stirring in ingredients that regular popcorn poppers can't handle: caramel, chocolate or other favorite toppings. Works equally well blending in creamy cheese sauces or peanuts, pretzels, chocolate bits and shredded wheat for savory trail mixes.  Easy-to-follow recipes included. 6-qt. capacity ensures you'll have plenty for everyone.  No need to use the chemical and fat laden microwave stuff - when this is so "sweet and easy"!
