Tips for Your Journey in Healthy Living

I certainly enjoyed teaching our 4 week series "Healthy Eating Simplified".  It was great to be able to see everyone each week and to share not only nutritional information but practical applications as well.  For years now I have been stressing the importance of freshly milled whole grains.  Most of you have experienced the benefits first hand.  There are, however, some other basic steps to take in our journey to better health. With one basic principle, "Eat Real Food", as our foundation, the other seven steps are as follows:
  • Eat Real Bread
  • Drink More Water
  • Reestablish Gut Bacteria
  • Eat More Vegetables (and fruit)
  • Get Rid of the Junk
  • Exercise
  • Rest
For those of you who could not make the class, we will repeat it again in the future; but for now, I will share two ideas and a few great products to help you in your endeavors.

Drink More Water! (click here for full article)

Most of us are concerned about the food we drink while neglecting the importance of what we drink.  Water is essential for life and proper functioning of the body.  It is second only to oxygen in order of importance in sustaining life.  Water not only transports valuable nutrients into every cell in our body, but is also instrumental in flushing out wastes and toxins from these cells.  It is just as effective for cleaning the inside of our bodies as the outside.  Since we would not consider cleaning the outside of our bodies with sugar filled sodas or fruit juices, why do we think we can replace pure clean water for cleansing the inside of our bodies?

Water performs many valuable functions in a healthy body. Water helps restore mineral balance, relieves constipation, promotes proper kidney and liver function and can even help relieve back pain, just to name a few!

So drink up!!  Your health depends on it!!
  • Start each day with an 8 oz glass of water, before eating or drinking anything else.  I call this "priming the pump".  It begins the morning cleansing process and will help you better distinguish between hunger and thirst throughout the day.
  • Drink ½ your body weight in ounces of water each day, particularly if you eat a lot of meat.  Set a goal for you and your children to drink your required amount before any other beverage is consumed.
Pre bottled Alkalized Ionized water from Historic Springs

Based on years of scientific research, ionized, alkalized water is making a huge breakthrough in restoring health.  Reduced water is known for it detoxifying and energizing affect since its reduced particle size is 6 times more hydrating than regular water.  Alkalized water helps restore healthy pH levels to overly acidic bodies.  We offer several options to help you HYDRATE.

Or make your own for pennies

Hydrogen Water Stick - FDA registered medical device is a porous stick that alkalizes and ionizes the water as it flows through the stick.  Just drop the stick in your water bottle (up to 1 liter/stick), tightly close the bottle and shake.  In about 15 minutes you have great tasting alkalized, hydrogen free water.  Just keep refilling your bottle following the same procedure.  Once activated the stick need to remain in water at all times.  It is good for about 600 liters which will last about 6 months for average use.

Regularly priced at $79.99 we are offering an introductory special of $69.99

Also great are our liter and 1/2 liter refillable water bottles.  Comes in a variety of colors.

Reestablish Gut Bacteria

The human intestinal tract is normally populated by millions of bacteria and yeast.  Some are good and some are potentially bad.  In the right balance, however, all provide a beneficial function in the digestive process of food, as well as a vital role in our immune function.  These "friendly" bacteria help keep harmful organisms under control.

Many of us may not realize that these organisms must be replenished on a daily basis, especially if one has used antibiotics.  Antibiotics kill the good bacteria right along with the bad, which may be necessary from time to time but in reality actually weakens the immune function due to the destruction of this beneficial intestinal flora.  An overgrowth of disease causing bacteria as well as yeast has now become a common problem in America.  America is one of the only cultures in the world that does not have  a fermented food of some kind as part of our ethnic diet.

The solution - incorporate a cultured or fermented food into our daily diet and/or supplement with a good probiotic.  Strive to eat about ½ cup of yogurt a day at the very least.  A good, plain yogurt with several live active cultures can be sweetened with honey and fruit for a great snack or blended with frozen fruit for a great smoothie.  Yogurt can easily be made with one of our yogurt makers for about $1.50/quart.

Yogurt Makers

Our Yolife maker is my personal favorite in that it comes with 7 - 6 oz glass jars and regular lid as well as a tall, dome lid that allows you to use up to 3 qt jars at a time.
FermPlus Wholefoods w/Probiotcs (GlutenFree) $36/8oz jar

Supplementing with a good probiotic is important as well and can do wonders for a compromised gut.  It can help correct such issues as poor digestion, diarrhea, leaky gut and irritable bowel.  I have personally taken a probiotic supplement for years.  I have never found one that even comes close to FermPlus.  A healthy gut is vital to good health!!

FermPlus was created to provide the 13 key Lactobacillus strains (not just two or three strains) together in their own food source. This food source also acts as a prebiotic which allows the bacteria to stay alive and healthy and able to work synergistically together to provide your body with a very powerful probiotic. This is the result of two decades of research.

FermPlus' bacteria is cultured from vegetables and fruit (not dairy or soil based organisms) and free of any genetic engineering.

FermPlus combines billions of Live Probiotics from 13 key strains of friendly bacteria and naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, phyto-nutreints & enzymes found in the 15 specially selected Wholefoods.

FermPlus does not contain a single manmade vitamin, synthetic mineral, chemical, preservative, filler, binder or extract, and it is Gluten, Wheat & Dairy-Free

FermPlus is not like any other product I have found.  Regular retail is about $42 a jar but we have reduced the price to $36 to make it more affordable.  It is such a valuable product for your health!!!  This is at least 2 months supply for one person at ½ teaspoon per day.  Children can easily need only ¼ teaspoon.  It is green food so can easily be mixed in juice or a smoothie.  Some of the organisms are heat stable so the product can actually be sprinkled over soup as well.  I take mine first thing in the morning and (when I remember) I like to take another ¼-½ teaspoon last thing at night.

Recipes

"Eat Your Vegetables" Black Eye Pea and Brown Rice Medley

I "threw" this dish together for a class recently as an example of another way to make whole grains a part of your daily diet.  It was such a hit everyone wanted the "recipe".

The new Rice Blends by Lundberg are fabulous.  They come in 1# packages making it perfect to try several different kinds

In at least a 4 qt pressure cooker, heat oil over medium heat. Add rice blend and stir to lightly toast.  Add remaining ingredients.  Lock lid into place and bring pressure up to second ring.  Reduce heat to maintain pressure and cook for 18-20 minutes.  Let pressure naturally release or quick release.
