Cold and Flu Season - Get a Jump on it
Though the cooler days of fall bring the thoughts of apples, pumpkins, and beautifully colored autumn leaves, it also is the beginning of what many have labeled the "cold and flu" season. This fact coupled with all the current publicity about the "dreaded" H1N1, has many of us concerned about how we can further protect our families from sickness. First and foremost we must begin by making sure our diets consist mostly of "real" whole foods and avoid an excessive consumption of sugar. Real whole grain bread, made from freshly milled whole grains, is paramount to the foundation of any healthy diet. Whole grains provide a broad spectrum of nutrients to insure a strong immune system. Remember, Jesus compared himself to bread for a reason!! With this as our starting point, there are a few other measures we can take to insure the greatest protection.
FermPlus Wholefood Probiotic Supplement
Scientific studies show that a lack of bacteria in the intestines leads to a weak immune system and low disease resistance. Populating your intestine with lots of "good" bacteria helps to keep disease causing bacteria in check. "Probiotic" bacteria also produce chemicals that ward off disease causing bacteria. So having lots of these healthy bacteria means that you are guarding against inevitable invaders. Making sure you get a daily dose of these valuable organisms can be as easy as adding ½ cup of a good quality yogurt to your diet everyday. Buy plain yogurt that has at least 5 different live active organisms and sweeten it with fresh fruit or honey if you like. To insure I get my protection I take a daily probiotic supplement. FermPlus is a living, wholefood probiotic supplement that combines the nutrient packed goodness of 15 gluten free wholefoods with 13 key stains of live organisms. It has naturally occurring enzymes, amino acids, essential fatty acids and vital minerals and vitamins made readily absorbable by the 13 strains of lactic acid bacteria. It is 100% natural and does not contain a single added nanmade vitamin, synthetic mineral, chemical preservative, filler, binder or extract and it is completely gluten and dairy free. It is the perfect addition to any prevention program. There are 60 - ½ tsp servings per jar.

Harmonized Protein Powder Supplement by Progressive.
Poor dietary habits inhibit the immune system by creating deficiencies in protein, vitamins and minerals. A healthy diet, with sufficient protein intake, supports the immune system because the immune cells are made of protein and are in a constant state of renewal. Many scientific studies have shown that whey protein in particular offers the greatest immune support. However, protein must be absorbed to be effective. Harmonized Protein Supplement by Progressive is unique in that it is not only a whey protein concentrate, as opposed to an isolate, but also has added digestive enzymes to ensure digestion and absorption. Herbal liver and kidney supportive nutrients are added to follow the break down of amino acids from absorption through elimination. Sea vegetables are added for an alkalizing effect.
Harmonized Protein Powder can be mixed with water or added to juice or milk to make a great tasting protein shake. Harmonized Protein comes is chocolate and vanilla as well as a completely vegan variety. I first became aware of the research done on the immune support and protection of whey protein when I battled cancer a few years ago. I have since looked for a whey protein that I could offer that was superior to those catering to the high - protein body builder consumer. Harmonized Protein is just that product. While it can certainly build muscle, it is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to support their immune system but especially those in a compromised state of health.

Grapefruit Seed Extract by Nutribiotics
Last but not least if sickness does prevail, Grapefruit Seed Extract is a great natural antibacterial, antiviral way to attack infection. At the first sign of symptoms our family starts with Grapefruit Seed Extracts - 10 drops in a small amount of juice taken several times a day. It is also available in capsule form with added Echinacea. Relief is usually noticed with in 24 - 72 hours.
Grapefruit Seed Extract is simply a great first aid item to have on hand. University of Georgia studies found Grapefruit Seed Extract to be more effect at disinfecting surfaces than chlorine. I keep mine on hand in the kitchen to wipe down cutting boards and counters. A few drops diluted in water is perfect for cleaning cuts, scraped and even diaper rash!!
