The night of our recent Winter Solstice Concert in the Cave Without a Name, a dear friend of mine introduced me to her Sufi teacher, Nizami, and asked if he could sing a prayer as part of the program. I didn't know anything about him, but quickly agreed because the sparkle in his eyes was unmistakeably clear and bright. Little did I know that Nizami was a 17th generation Master Musician in the Sufi tradition from Pakistan, and that his "little prayer" would turn out to be a clear, strong chant that had everyone in the Cave singing and dancing with abandon, virtually floating on air as we left the cave! And now he's coming to the Circle this Sunday, in addition to offering a workshop in the afternoon. This is a unique opportunity to hear the majestic, moving poetry of Rumi spoken and sung in the original Farsi language, accompanied by his world-renowned sitar playing. Check out http://www.ustadnizami.com if you want to learn more. I really hope you can join us for the deeply poetic experience of being transported into the heart of a piece such as this one: "Gazing into the Light"
GAZING INTO THE LIGHT
The lamps are different, But the Light is the same. So many garish lamps
in the dying brain's lamp-show, Forget about them. Concentrate on the essence,
concentrate on the Light. In lucid bliss, calmly smoking
off its own holy fire, The Light streams towards you from all things, All people, all possible permutations of good, evil, thought, passion. The lamps are different, but the Light is the same. One matter, one energy, one Light,
one Light-mind, Endlessly emanating all things. One turning and burning diamond, One, one, one. Ground yourself, strip yourself down, To blind loving silence. Stay there, until you see You are gazing at the Light With its own ageless eyes.
