There's an old Native American story about a worm that is eaten by a bird. The bird, in turn, gets eaten by a cat whose post-dinner satisfaction is cut short by a mean-looking coyote. Soon after devouring the cat, the coyote is killed by a gigantic grizzly bear. A short while later the grizzly comes face to face with a hunter, who promptly kills the bear. The man is so proud of himself for this daring feat that he climbs a mountain to proclaim his victory by lighting a fire and sending smoke signals to his distant village. But in his haste, he runs so hard up to the mountaintop that he collapses and dies at the top. Before too long the worm crawls out of his body, then calmly proceeds to join a number of other worms in devouring the remains.
Among other things, this story reminds us that physical dominance is fleeting at best and that it's important to be mindful of our deep connection to all our fellow inhabitants of Mother Earth. As Americans, we will rightfully celebrate the glory of Independence Day this weekend, with all its patriotic overtones, picnics, fun, and fireworks. But as Planetary Citizens, may we also take this opportunity to be mindful of our Interdependence with all Beings, for truly "We Are One." With best wishes for a safe, relaxing weekend -- and hopes of seeing you Around the Circle,
