Last week my wife, Zet, and I were able to get out of town and spend a couple of days in the Hill Country, thanks to the two separate bed-and-breakfast gift certificates we'd received from friends in recent months. We spent the first night in the Canyon House, a delightful, handcrafted cottage tucked into a small canyon at the Hill Country Sculpture and Meditation Garden near Kerrville (www.elmcottages.com). The whole garden is a charming, inviting space, but the Canyon House has a particularly restful ambience, lovingly created by Willie McDaniel, a gifted woodworker and spiritual teacher, to help fast-moving city-dwellers like us relax and unwind. It's a unique, non-linear space that a Hobbit would love to inhabit: built of native stone and well-burnished logs carefully cut by hand and fitted one at a time. The cottage wrapped us in a timeless, cozy cocoon, hidden in the recesses of a box canyon that seems like it's located a hundred years and a thousand miles away from San Antonio-when in fact, it's just an hour north of here. We loved being there. After sleeping late, then intermittently meditating and moseying through the garden for several hours, we drove on to our second night's stay at a luxurious inn near Fredericksburg. Set in a large, plantation-style mansion, our spacious, second floor room opened up onto a huge veranda with a panoramic view of the vast, well-manicured lawn, the vineyard next door and the herb garden used by the gourmet restaurant located downstairs. Both the restaurant and the inn itself have received rave reviews in the New York Times, Texas Monthly, and Gourmet Magazine, among others. Suffice it to say that had we been the ones to pay the bill, this night's lodging would have cost us several times more than our first night in Kerrville. And yet, there was something about the place that just didn't suit us. Don't get me wrong; our stay there was pleasant enough, and I'm grateful to have had the chance to experience both places. But as we drove away the next morning, Zet and I concurred that we much preferred staying at the cozy Canyon House to the ritzy luxury of the larger inn. We felt right at home in one, while the other was like a pair of shoes that looked great, but fit too tight. It was clearly a well-run, well-appointed B&B that lots of other folks seem to love, but it just didn't speak to my soul. This experience served as a timely reminder about making choices: that sometimes the more suitable choice isn't the bright, flashy one, but the one that tiptoes into view, quietly and humbly. It's a matter of looking past the appearances, price tags and popularity involved before trying to solve the question of which choice to make, which voice to follow, which path will empower you. I'll be exploring this issue of making choices further during our regular service this Sunday morning, in the context of a conversation with my good friend, Beverly Meyer, a Holistic Nutritionist with amazing insights about the mind-body connection. We'll focus on translating "good ideas" into action in our daily lives. Afterwards, Beverly will expand on this idea, addressing it in the context of healthful eating as part of her insightful workshop, "Knowing What to Eat When Everyone Tells You Something Different!", which will be held in the JumpStart Classroom from 1:30 - 3:30pm. In it she will focus on the power of listening to your own body and honoring your natural ability to make healthy choices, despite the many fad diets and media voices competing for your food budget dollars. You can get further details by scrolling a little further down this page, or by clicking on www.dietandhealthcenter.info. I hope you'll consider joining us for one or both of these two events on Sunday, as together we hone our abilities to make empowering, healthy, and helpful choices for ourselves. You'll be glad you did! With blessings,
