If you're like me sake has always been something that's a bit of a mystery. You probably started our with the cheap stuff they heat up and sell by the boatload at one of those Chinese owned "Japanese"  restaurants that became so popular in the late 80s. You also probably never ventured much past that? Well Sake, like wine and fine Single Malt, comes in many levels of quality and complexity. We've decided that it's time to pull back the curtain on the beautiful world of premium Japanese Sake. Please join use as we welcome Morgan Hartnann from Vine Connections, the country's leading importer of fine Japanese Sake as she takes us on a journey and tutored tasting of some of the best Sakes available on the market today.

Piaggia "Il Sasso" 2005
$43.99 bottle

JUST ARRIVED!!!

This has been one of my all-time favorite Italian wines for years.  The distributor just got this in at my request this week. It's from Piaggia, the leading winery in Carmignano, the area just north of Florence known for it's Bordeaux styled wines since Thomas Jefferson's day. (You'll remember we visited Silvia Vannucci and her family while we were in Tuscany.) Il Sasso is a blend of Sangiovese (70%) with Cabernet and Merlot. Why is this wine so compelling you ask?  Late harvests, low yields, lengthy macerations and no fining/filtration are the rule at Piaggia. They're also a practicing organic winery as are most of the best wineries these days. Gambero Rosso has bestowed the coveted Tre Bicchieri on Il Sasso numerous times as well. That's all icing on the cake because the bottom line is: this wine is simply delicious!  Ripe cherry and truffle aromas with perfect balance and weight. If Super Tuscans are your thing ( and why shouldn't they be?) then you won't want to miss Il Sasso. It's a home run!

Terlano Müller-Thurgau 2008
         (Alto Adige, Italy)
        Regular Price $18.99
        November Price $14.99

Muller Thurgau is a cross of Riesling and Sylvaner. Appreciated both for its amazing aromatics and unique flavors of peach and mango, this wine is fermented in stainless stell, which helps it maintain its fresh and appealing bouquet. Pale yellow in appearance with a light aromatic bouquet of tropical fruit. Dry, round and medium bodied on the palate with flavors of mango and peach balanced by crisp acidity. It has a nice weight on the palate and reminiscent of a white Rhone blend but ends with a crisp finish. Notes of jasmine, minerals, smoke and earthiness that complement its honeyed ripe fruits. Made in a generous style, it offers excellent depth as well as an added level of complexity that has developed in bottle.

 Tenuta Santome Prosecco NV
(Veneto, Italy)
Regular Price $13.99
November Price $12.99

Tenuta Santomè is run by the Spinazzè family with the consultancy of the well-known Prosecco's winemaker expert Marzio Pol.   The winery is a model in the modern production of wines with close planting-the scrupulous selection of the grapes, first on the vines, then in the cellar, and for the use of innovative wine-making systems.
Located very near the towns of Treviso and Venice, the Santomè vineyards cover an area of 60 hectares, 30 of which are located within the main estate in Biancade, and the other 30 situated on "Grave di Papadopoli," an island on the River Piave between the villages Cimadolmo and Maserada.
The origin of this winery is as interesting and historical as its name. Tenuta Santomè (St. Thomas) was chosen when a missionary who was born and bred in what is now the farmhouse on the Santomè estate, wrote to the Spinazzè family from far away Brazil to suggest the name. He felt that the figure of this Saint who is often pictured with his fingers shaped like a square, an instrument for measuring, was ideally suited to "seal" the events and products of this farm. This Saint and his seal represents the history of the Spinazzè family and Tenuta Santomè, its land, and the excellent wines that come from it. We though this little sparkler would be a perfect wine for the Thanksgiving holiday. It is an Extra-Dry Prosecco so it's got a touch more residual sugar than Brut but I don't think most people would notice beacause it's so incredibly refreshing. I am almost embarrassed to admit that the bottle was gone before I knew what happened.

  Villa Pillo "Chighialino" 2008
 (Tuscany, Italy)
Regular Price $12.99
   October Price $11.99

Villa Pillo is a traditional Tuscan Farm, founded in Medieval Times, mentioned in many historical documents. It is located in the heart of the Chianti area, equidistant from the Cities of Pisa, Florence and Siena. The wine, composed by 65% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, as been named because of the funny animal represented on the label. A dressed wild boar with a grape on his hand. It's a nice label for representing our tuscan region. The intention is to do a product easy to drink with the complexity and roundness of  French varieties, without loosing the flavour and fresh quality of traditional Tuscan wine. Thanks to the particular attention of the blend, they've obtained a wine with a medium dark colour with vibrant flavour and aromas, a pleasant wine to drink even if young. Every varieties did the fermentation separately anf after the Cigalino has been aged for 6 months in French one year used barrels of Lt. 225, which contribute to enhance the elegance.

  Molino di Grace Volano 2006
(Tuscany, Italy)
Regular Price $18.99
October Price $14.99

This is the 21st Century's greatest success story in Chianti country. Apparently from nowhere, two men, one American and one German, have descended on Tuscany and in five years have created one of the greatest Chianti estates. They must have had some idea what they were doing as it cannot be by accident that they settled on Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region between Florence and Siena, and home to the finest terroirs the region has to offer. The essential facts are that American entrepreneur Tim Grace settled on Tuscany and discovered the all but forgotten vineyards of Volano, just outside Panzano. Together with German banker Gerhard Hirmer the vineyard was resurrected and a new state-of-the-art winery built, then the final piece of this puzzle was brought into place: eminent oenologist Franco Bernabei was recruited to oversee the production. you can relax in the knowledge that in its short history Il Moilino di Grace has made a big impact on the Italian wine market with a string of awards from Gambero Rosso, the Italian wine bible. Volano is the perfect introduction to Molino di Grace. A simple, but beautifully made Sangiovese-based wine with a little Merlot from the hills above Lucarelli. No oak, just pure, clean Sangiovese black and red berry fruit, with light violet notes.

  Velenosia Il Brecciarolo 2007
 (Rosso Piceno, Italy)
Regular Price $18.99
October Price $14.99

Velenosi Ercole's farm was established in 1984, thanks to the will of two young entrepreneurs, Angela and Ercole Velenosi.
They have been operating in the wine sector for just a couple of decades, but their passion has allowed them to rapidly learn and improve their growing and winemaking techniques, create a winery with state-of-the-art and advanced equipment and produce excellent wines.
Quite a few people believe that Rosso Piceno Superiore is one of the most interesting d.o.c. wines of Central Italy. Rosso Piceno is produced in a rather vast hilly area of the Marches, but it is only in a very limited zone within the province of Ascoli Piceno that this wine, made from Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes, can boast the "Superior" qualification. This is due to the special microclimatic and pedologic conditions of this territory, which extends over fourteen municipalities of this province. Since we believe in the potentials of this wine, which is also popular among foreign consumers, we have tried to make the most of them, in the observance of tradition and, at the same time, through a modern interpretation. The result is convincing: Rosso Piceno Superiore Brecciarolo is an important, full-bodied wine capable of lasting for several years, but it is also characterized by a soft and pleasant taste, thanks to the ageing in oak casks. Its perfume is complex and structured, the flavour is ample and harmonious, improving with age.
