If you're like me sake has always been something that's a bit of a mystery. We've decided that it's time to pull back the curtain on the beautiful world of premium Japanese Sake. Please join use as we welcome Morgan Hartnann from Vine Connections, the country's leading importer of fine Japanese Sake as she takes us on a journey and tutored tasting of some of the best Sakes available on the market today.

This is the part of our newsletter where we try to convince you, our loyal customers to trust us to recommend to you a wine that we've found exceptionally great and memorable. We think these wines are unique, utterly delicious and deserve your attention and consideration. After all wine is only something you have with your meal... or is it ?????
Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl Riesling Kabinett 2008 (Oberhausen, Nahe)
$26.99 bottle
If the powerful, racy and amply fruited wines of the Nahe are considered among the best not only in Germany, but throughout the world, it is largely because of Helmut Dönnhoff's efforts. His family has been making wines in the Nahe River Valley (a tributary of the Mosel) since the 1750s but it is under Helmut's watch that the Estate has risen to the pinnacle of German wine. He is considered without a doubt to be one of the leading winemakers in Germany, and is a living legend. His saying that "My vineyards are like my children" makes it clear how much attention is paid to careful work in the vineyards.
One taste of his finely crafted Rieslings and it is apparent that something very special is before you.The wine is a study in balance, perfection and complexity with flavors of rounded peach fruits, lime, and grapefruit zest. Honestly how often to you get to taste one of the world's best wines for such a reasonable price? Well you can right now for a limited time. Don't miss the chance...
Carter Cellars
Truchard Vineyards
Merlot
2007
(Napa Valley)
$69.99
A sleek, smooth wine that serves up plenty of cinnamon and spice flavor backed by a core of blackberry, raspberry, anise, herb and coffee flavors.
Violets, lavender, vanilla bean, dark cherry - these are some of the flavors and aromas woven into this beautiful, fragrant Merlot. Displaying the Carter propensity for extravagant fruit, this Merlot's flavors are concentrated, abundant, and deep, and the wine offers a distinct minerality and spiciness alongside its intense fruit and floral notes. It's complex and elegant, showing good length on the finish.
318 cases produced
(Chablis, Burgundy)
$37.99 bottle
Courgis is a small village 7 km southwest of Chablis where Alice and Olivier de Moor live and work. It is where Olivier grew up, and his "old" cellar, the part where he ages his Chablis in oak barrels, is underneath his grandparents' house. From the hill where Courgis sits, the view is of vineyards over hills all the way to the Chablis Grands Crus. They began their estate by planting three plots of Chablis, -Bel Air, Clardy and Rosette,-in 1989. The whole Chablis area is highly calcareous, with soils formed millions of years ago in a warm, shallow sea. So the limestone is rich in shellfish fossils like oysters (exogyra virgula), urchins, bivalves, ammonites. This is the finest of Alice & Olivier de Moor's Chablis bottlings, coming from their Rosette vineyard yielding only 30 hl/ha. It is classic Chablis, fresh and invigorating yet also agreeably full bodied. Floral notes mingle with yellow fruit and a fine mineral finish.

Dear (Contact First Name),
"If You Could Only Have One Champagne for the Holidays Which One Should You Choose?"
Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Sainte Anne
Brut Non-Vintage
$43.99
This is the section of our newsletter where I usually wax poetic about whatever thought has crossed my mind but we've gotten some much great wine in the shop this week that I couldn't wait to tell you about them all. Champagne is one of my weaknesses (I have many) and during my trip to NYC in September it was my intention to find a great one for you for the holidays. I was already familiar with Chartogne-Taillet's wonderful wines, having sold and purchased them as a wholesaler but I had not had access to them for a few seasons. New Yorkers are spoiled in that they have access to the best the world has to offer always where we here in Charlotte have to truly dig to find our truffles. I tasted through over 60 Champagnes to finally settle on this one. Price is a consideration ( the vineyards of Champagne are the most expensive pieces of wine real estate in the world.) but most of all the taste and magic has to be there. The Cuvee Sainte Anne has everything in spades. The blend is 50% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, and 10% Meunier. This is a champagne for people who think they don't like champagne. Overtly fruity and joyous, round and accessible but with real depth and character to the nose. This is a full-bodied and assertive Champagne that will please those lovers of the "Yellow Label" easily. This holiday season if you're going to drink one Champagne (and you should) choose Chartogne-Taillet's Cuvee Sainte Anne for your table. You'll be happy you did.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir 2008 In Stock!

|
|
It's that time of year again and like last year in the absolute worst economic meltdown since the great depression, Patricia Green will release her latest vintage of Oregon Pinot Noir and like last year they will sell out - fast. Why? Because they are limited, extremely delicious and reasonably priced by market standards. (You'll recall that the great depression also gave rise to prohibition and the bootlegging industry... people gotta have their juice.) I will get the city's biggest allocation because I have sold more than anyone else in the city. That still is a small amount when compared to a lot of California producers. All of the factors above make her wines a no brainer for me and I hope for you too. Please e-mail or call me with your requests and I will do my best to make sure everyone gets what they've requested...

Terlano Müller-Thurgau 2008
(Alto Adige, Italy)
Regular Price $18.99 November Price $14.99 Muller Thurgau is a cross of Riesling and Sylvaner. Appreciated both for its amazing aromatics and unique flavors of peach and mango, this wine is fermented in stainless stell, which helps it maintain its fresh and appealing bouquet. Pale yellow in appearance with a light aromatic bouquet of tropical fruit. Dry, round and medium bodied on the palate with flavors of mango and peach balanced by crisp acidity. It has a nice weight on the palate and reminiscent of a white Rhone blend but ends with a crisp finish. Notes of jasmine, minerals, smoke and earthiness that complement its honeyed ripe fruits. Made in a generous style, it offers excellent depth as well as an added level of complexity that has developed in bottle.
Tenuta Santome Prosecco NV (Veneto, Italy)
Regular Price $13.99
November Price $12.99
Tenuta Santomè is run by the Spinazzè family with the consultancy of the well-known Prosecco's winemaker expert Marzio Pol. The winery is a model in the modern production of wines with close planting-the scrupulous selection of the grapes, first on the vines, then in the cellar, and for the use of innovative wine-making systems. Located very near the towns of Treviso and Venice, the Santomè vineyards cover an area of 60 hectares, 30 of which are located within the main estate in Biancade, and the other 30 situated on "Grave di Papadopoli," an island on the River Piave between the villages Cimadolmo and Maserada. The origin of this winery is as interesting and historical as its name. Tenuta Santomè (St. Thomas) was chosen when a missionary who was born and bred in what is now the farmhouse on the Santomè estate, wrote to the Spinazzè family from far away Brazil to suggest the name. He felt that the figure of this Saint who is often pictured with his fingers shaped like a square, an instrument for measuring, was ideally suited to "seal" the events and products of this farm. This Saint and his seal represents the history of the Spinazzè family and Tenuta Santomè, its land, and the excellent wines that come from it. We though this little sparkler would be a perfect wine for the Thanksgiving holiday. It is an Extra-Dry Prosecco so it's got a touch more residual sugar than Brut but I don't think most people would notice beacause it's so incredibly refreshing. I am almost embarrassed to admit that the bottle was gone before I knew what happened.
Villa Pillo "Chighialino" 2008
(Tuscany, Italy) Regular Price $12.99 October Price $11.99 Villa Pillo is a traditional Tuscan Farm, founded in Medieval Times, mentioned in many historical documents. It is located in the heart of the Chianti area, equidistant from the Cities of Pisa, Florence and Siena. The wine, composed by 65% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, as been named because of the funny animal represented on the label. A dressed wild boar with a grape on his hand. It's a nice label for representing our tuscan region. The intention is to do a product easy to drink with the complexity and roundness of French varieties, without loosing the flavour and fresh quality of traditional Tuscan wine. Thanks to the particular attention of the blend, they've obtained a wine with a medium dark colour with vibrant flavour and aromas, a pleasant wine to drink even if young. Every varieties did the fermentation separately anf after the Cigalino has been aged for 6 months in French one year used barrels of Lt. 225, which contribute to enhance the elegance.
Molino di Grace Volano 2006 (Tuscany, Italy) Regular Price $18.99 October Price $14.99
This is the 21st Century's greatest success story in Chianti country. Apparently from nowhere, two men, one American and one German, have descended on Tuscany and in five years have created one of the greatest Chianti estates. They must have had some idea what they were doing as it cannot be by accident that they settled on Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region between Florence and Siena, and home to the finest terroirs the region has to offer. The essential facts are that American entrepreneur Tim Grace settled on Tuscany and discovered the all but forgotten vineyards of Volano, just outside Panzano. Together with German banker Gerhard Hirmer the vineyard was resurrected and a new state-of-the-art winery built, then the final piece of this puzzle was brought into place: eminent oenologist Franco Bernabei was recruited to oversee the production. you can relax in the knowledge that in its short history Il Moilino di Grace has made a big impact on the Italian wine market with a string of awards from Gambero Rosso, the Italian wine bible. Volano is the perfect introduction to Molino di Grace. A simple, but beautifully made Sangiovese-based wine with a little Merlot from the hills above Lucarelli. No oak, just pure, clean Sangiovese black and red berry fruit, with light violet notes.
Velenosia Il Brecciarolo 2007
Regular Price $18.99 October Price $14.99
Velenosi Ercole's farm was established in 1984, thanks to the will of two young entrepreneurs, Angela and Ercole Velenosi. They have been operating in the wine sector for just a couple of decades, but their passion has allowed them to rapidly learn and improve their growing and winemaking techniques, create a winery with state-of-the-art and advanced equipment and produce excellent wines. Quite a few people believe that Rosso Piceno Superiore is one of the most interesting d.o.c. wines of Central Italy. Rosso Piceno is produced in a rather vast hilly area of the Marches, but it is only in a very limited zone within the province of Ascoli Piceno that this wine, made from Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes, can boast the "Superior" qualification. This is due to the special microclimatic and pedologic conditions of this territory, which extends over fourteen municipalities of this province. Since we believe in the potentials of this wine, which is also popular among foreign consumers, we have tried to make the most of them, in the observance of tradition and, at the same time, through a modern interpretation. The result is convincing: Rosso Piceno Superiore Brecciarolo is an important, full-bodied wine capable of lasting for several years, but it is also characterized by a soft and pleasant taste, thanks to the ageing in oak casks. Its perfume is complex and structured, the flavour is ample and harmonious, improving with age.
