Very Special WineMaker Tasting Event
Stu Smith of Smith Madrone Vineyards

Wednesday November 11
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Please call for reservations - this event will sell out!

One of our favorite wineries is Smith-Madrone. Owned by two brothers, this winery is as old school as it gets - Stu and Charles Smith grow the grapes, make the wine, manage the winery, and even host visitors who come by for a tasting. They founded the winery in 1971 high up on Spring Mountain, and when exploring the property the Smiths discovered that grapes had been grown on their estate as far back  as the 1880's.

The wines are simply amazing - the Smiths coax the finest fruit the land can produce, and then practice their alchemy in crafting it into award winning wines.

For this event, Stu Smith will tell us a bit more about the winery and the unique winemaking practiced there, and taste us through the portfolio.

The Wine Shop's Chefs will create small plates to pair with each of the wines, bringing out all of the nuanced flavors of the Smith-Madrone masterpieces

  • Smith-Madrone Riesling
  • Smith-Madrone Chardonnay
  • Smith-Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting fee is $15, which includes the wines and accompanying small plates.

Samuel Smith's original brewery at Tadcaster was founded in 1758 and is Yorkshire's oldest brewery. It is one of the few remaining independant breweries in England, and is the last to use the traditional Yorkshire square method of fermentation soley in stone squares. The beers were first introduced to the United States market in 1978 and have become the benchmark for craft made beers.

Join us this Thursday, November 12 as our Beermaster tastes us through the beers of Samuel Smith.

  • Pale Ale
  • Porter Stout
  • Oatmeal Stout
  • Winter Welcome
  • Samuel Smith Lager
Call to reserve your spot - this will be a great session.

Special Seasonal Beer Offering

Anchor Brewing 2009 Christmas Ale in Special 1.5 liter Magnums

This year marks the 35th release of Anchor Brewing's Christmas Ale. Every year since 1975 the master brewers at Anchor have brewed a very special Christmas Ale, which is available from mid-November until sellout. The Ale's recipe is different evey year, and so is the label, with a different tree each release. The intent and spirit of the beer stays the same however - joy and celebration of the newness of life. Properly stored and refrigerated, the beer remains intriguing and enjoyable for years and years, with different nuances emerging over time. Many enthusiasts lay down a bottle or two just like a fine wine, and marvel as the beer matures over the years.
This special 1.5 liter magnum is the perfect holiday gift, and the larger size is perfect for aging, or enjoying today.
This larger format is very limited, and we likely won't get any more, so call to reserve your bottle soon.

 Friends:

As many of you know our mission here at The Wine Shop is to help you find the best artisanally crafted wines available in the area, many of which are made by small family-owned wineries. One of our favorites is Smith-Madrone, an old-school winery run by two old-school brothers. I have visited dozens of wineries, but one of my favorite visits was to Smith-Madrone. No fancy over-built tasting rooms, no stacks and stacks of logo merchandise, and no superfluous overhead that has to be built into the wines' prices - just the gear required to turn mountain grown fruit into stunning wines. Proprieter Stu Smith will be here tomorrow night to tell us more and taste us through the wines- please join us for this special event.

The Smith-Madrone event will sell out, so to salve the disappointment we are also announcing two great events next week- a Rockstar Pinot Noir tasting, and an Italian Wine and Food pairing event. Don't worry about how to pick one - join us for both.

With the Holidays fast approaching, our Private Room is starting to book up, so call Amy soon and hold your date. And for your gift giving, consider the wine baskets we are putting together. They are unique and guaranteed to fit.

As always, the Restaurant, Wine Bar, and Wine Shop are open during all of our special events. If you can't make it for our tastings, dinners, or classes, you can still enjoy Chef's tremendous talents and some awesome wines.

Next time you drop by, please ask for our latest Catering Menu. Our gourmet Paninni, Soups, Salads, and Flatbread pizzas are perfect for your next office lunch or private party.

When you are looking for your next Happy Hour spot - remember that Tommy Joy is here Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 until 8:30, playing some terrific tunes.

And remember, your next new favorite wine is in our racks right now.

Please  shop local!

We look forward to seeing you at Charlotte's Premier Wine and Food Destination!

Unique and Seductive Red Wine is this week's Staff Favorite

Flora Springs Sangiovese

Sangiovese is known throughout wine world for its engaging bouquet and bright acidity that matches with a wide range of culinary preparations. Red fruit accents of cranberry and raspberry are evident on the nose and palate, and complimented by hint of blueberry for added complexity. Flora Springs uses older neutral barrels and a shortened aging regimen so as not to mask the elegance and freshness best exhibited by Sangiovese.
Sangio usually calls to mind the great wines of Italy, but Flora Springs is showing that the Cal-Ital category is newly thriving. Soft, seductive, food friendly, this is a tremendous wine.
