Anne Parent and Francois Servin
November 11th 2009 Time: 7:00 pm

We're pleased to host Rob Campbell from Pignatiello Wine Importers in Charlotte with two of his major wine producers, Anne Parent from Pommard and Francois Servin from Chablis for an evening of education and a tasting of great Burgundy wines. Anne Parent
POMMARD - One of the most respected and well-known winemakers in all of Burgundy, the Domaine Parent moved from Volnay to Pommard in 1803. One of their early customers was Thomas Jefferson, who brought these wines back to America to share with our forefathers. Anne's ancestor, Etienne Parent, was Jefferson's personal advisor, friend, and confidant. In fact, Jefferson took cuttings from the Domaine Parent vines to plant at Monticello. Unfortunately, the climate in Virginia is not conducive to growing Pinot Noir; so the vines did not survive. Still, this is a unique tie to American history.Anne is a lawyer by training. Along with her sister, Catherine, she took over the estate in 1998, thus becoming the 12th generation of winemakers in this family. The wines simply get better and better each year. Anne has incredible energy and drive. In fact, she founded the Women's Winemaker Association in Burgundy and was its first president.Today, when Anne Parent replenishes her vineyards, she grafts vines onto the old rootstock in order to preserve the "history" of the family's vineyards. And this is truly a family affair. Seven family members do all of the work at the domaine. In Pommard, there are 70 winemakers and this family is proud to be counted as one of the top few. They have some of the choicest parcels of vines in Pommard; so they want the wine to start with the best fruit. They harvest by hand. Then, they visually inspect and sort every grape. The Domaine Parent was also the first family to analyze the grapes and the soil in order to pursue more environmentally-friendly winemaking. Their wines are actually made organically, but they do not put that designation on the label. Anne makes truly expressive wines in the traditional Burgundian style. She says that there are no bad vintages, just bad winemakers. Furthermore, she says that the great winemakers can make good wine in any year; they may just have to make less of it in a difficult year. Anne Parent is a top winemaker who makes great wines that show incredible depth, complexity, and balance.

| CHABLIS - Francois makes wine because he loves to make wine. He uses old-world traditions and also benefits from modern technology. Francois feels that the winemaker is more important than the barrel maker. He says that making wine is an art, whereas so many people reduce it to a science. The Servin family traces its roots in Chablis all the way back to 1652. Francois sells to me because we are friends. There is great demand for his wines; so he could sell to whomever he chooses. While the Domaine Servin estate wines are widely marketed, Francois has given me the exclusive right to import his PERSONAL wines, which he sells under his dad's name, Marcel. These are only bottled when they turn out perfectly. As such, they are extremely limited and exclusive. And they are only available in Francois' personal cellar and through P. Comms Int'l.Bourgogne Aujourd'hui, the trade journal in Burgundy, rates Francois as one of the TOP TWO winemakers out of 120 in all of Chablis. In a recent "bragging rights' competition (which is not publicized) in Chablis, Francois took home 2 of the 9 medals, including a gold medal. At the recent wine competition at the Hotel Bellagio in Las Vegas, several hundred Chardonnays were ranked. Francois only submitted 3 wines and all 3 of them were awarded places in the top eleven. At the Atlanta Int'l Wine Challenge, Francois' basic Chablis earned the silver medal. The list of awards could go on and on. In short, Francois makes quality Chardonnay year in and year out. They are made in the true Chablis style (full and rich with good minerality) while respecting tried and true Chablis traditions that Francois learned from his grandfather. These are memorable wines. |

If you're like me sake has always been something that's a bit of a mystery. We've decided that it's time to pull back the curtain on the beautiful world of premium Japanese Sake. This is the part of our newsletter where we try to convince you, our loyal customers to trust us to recommend to you a wine that we've found exceptionally great and memorable. We think these wines are unique, utterly delicious and deserve your attention and consideration. After all wine is only something you have with your meal... or is it ?????
Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes
Morgon 2007 (Beaujolais)

Louis-Claude Desvignes is of the sparrow-type Beaujolais vigneron: raven-black hair that is, more often than not, standing in various directions, bright eyes and prominent nose, and a well-pitched, humorous cackle. His energy level is also twittery, and he barely stands still for a minute during a tasting in his cellars, offering a bottle of this and a bottle of that but the seriousness of his winemaking is never in doubt. His vineyards came to him by inheritance and the Desvignes family, as the name suggests, has been making Morgon for generations. The vineyards are on the Montagne de Py in the center of Morgon, the fruit of which is of far superior quality to that produced in the outlying areas of the appellation.Morgon is, along with Moulin-à-Vent, the most age worthy of the Cru Beaujolais and Desvignes wines are fine examples. The wines age terrifically well and take on the character of Pinot Noir. When young, the character is of dark cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant. With age, the wines become more earthy, velvety with cocoa and coffee tones. At our request, the wines are bottled unfiltered some years or at most lightly fined. The wine is in a word delicious and I don't think they will get the chance at my house... Also a great Thanksgiving pick.
KIUCHI BREWERY'S
Hitachino Nest XH Beer
$5.49/bottle
We are hoping to have a beer tasting later this month (November 23rd - more info to come)and a Sake tasting in early December - So my pick this week is an interesting, delicious beer made in Japan that has been influenced by Sake... meaning this Belgian-style beer was matured in oak casks that were used for the maturation of Shocyu Sake. In 1996, after 173 years as a sake brewer, the Kiuchi Brewery began to produce beer as well. Prior to 1994 Japanese regulations had actually made this expansion difficult, if not impossible, so Hitachino Nest Beer was in the forefront of a microbrew revolution. Many of the revolutionaries have already stumbled, however, largely due to beers that were too timid to make an impression on the drinker. In a short time they have already made a name for themselves by releasing creative brews that tip their hats to a number of international influences, radically different from the lager-styles of Japan's "Big Four:" Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, and Suntory. In terms of craft, the move from sake to beer was not a big jump; although many people associate sake more with wine, beer and sake are both made from grains and share a similar production process. Appearance: Murky brownish redish... Nice soft, white head. Smell: Sweet, with just a hint of hops. Almost has the fruit profile found in some Belgians. Almost a sticky malty sweet scent to it, almost like a barley wine. Taste: Sweetish-sour,backed up with bitter hop taste. At the very end there is a really nice roasted wood quality and a little bite from alcohol (7%ABV).
Felton Road Pinot Noir
2006 (Central Otago)
$49.99 bottle
Feted as one of New Zealands best producers and justifiably so, in my opinion, for time and time again Felton Road's wines triumph against all-comers. Deep garnet with purple hints. A rather brooding nose of ripe raspberry countered with earth, toast and dark perfume... notes of deep red rose petals. The palate displays a plush, cushioned silkiness, with interplay of juicy, mouthwatering acid and ripe, rich raspberry and boysenberry fruit, offset with dusty bramble leaf. The finish is long and relatively complex for such a youthful wine, displaying minerals with dusty tannin and a kick of mocha.

Dear (Contact First Name),
Well Halloween is over and so is October. November is here and it's time to start thinking about the holidays. Thanksgiving is 23 days away and will be here before you know it. We're taking a break from the wine dinners until January but we have two great tastings planned. This month we've got a tutored Burgundy tasting on November 11th with winemakers from Burgundy. It's almost sold out so if you're interested don't hesitate to call us and reserve a seat. Then on December 7th, we're hosting a tutored tasting of Sake. We'll be serving 12 of Japan's premier sakes of the highest quality and our host, Morgan Hartmann fro Vine Connections will educate us about the many nuances of Sake. If you're like me I could use a little more information. Again be sure to make your reservations soon.
We've also got a great Fab Five table this month with wines from Marco Laico of Vino Vino. He'll be pouring the wines this weekend and again on November 22nd.
We've got two sought after Oregon Pinot Noirs in stock for a short time. Ken Wright just arrived and we'll have Patricia Green in stock soon. These wines always sell out and make great wines for Thanksgiving so drop by or call us to reserve yours. We also have Hourglass in stock. Produced by Charlotte's favorite winemaker, Bob Foley, these wines are the quintessential essence of Napa Valley. We don't have much so it's first come first served.
This month there's something for everyone. The wine bar is picking up as the season heats up. Don't forget we're also open for lunch on Saturdays as well retail only on Sundays from 12:00 till 8:00pm.

Ken Wright Cellars 2008
In Stock for the Holidays... |
|
Located in rural Carlton, Oregon, Ken Wright Cellars is devoted to showcasing the inherent quality of selected vineyard sites. With a clarity and breadth that is unequaled by other varieties, we believe Pinot noir best expresses the character of these sites. Rather than stamping wine with a varietal trademark, we see Pinot noir as a vehicle for conveying the aroma, flavor and texture of the location in which it is grown. What Really Counts??? Well over twenty years of winemaking have taught a simple truth. Source is everything. When you work with sites that have a "ton" of character, great things can happen. These great things cannot happen without a commitment by the vineyard owner to the health of the vineyard and extremely low crop levels that ensure intensity of aroma, flavor and texture. We're pleased to offer five of Ken's single vineyard pinot noirs all line priced at $55.99 a bottle
Vineyards of the Eola Hills:
Carter Vineyard 2008
$55.99 bottle
Located just 1 mile from Canary Hill in the Eola Hills, Carter Vineyard is lower on the hillside yet has a leaner and less fertile soil. It is mainly Nekia soil, which is formed from weathered basic rock. It lies at an elevation of 325' and was planted in 1983. This bottling is comprised of the Wadenswil, Dijon 777, Dijon 667, Dijon 115, and Pommard clones. The wine is firmer than Canary Hill in its youth but evolves beautifully after a few years in bottle to show black fruits and fresh, healthy earth scents. Approximately 650 cases are produced. The vineyard is owned by Jack and Kathleen Carter, and managed by Mark Gould.
Vineyards of theYamhill-Carlton District:
Abbott Claim Vineyard $55.99 bottle Our newest arrival to the stable. This site is a portion of the original John F. Abbott Donation Land Claim and lies in the middle of a sedimentary ridge east of Carlton. This is a consistent broad face of land with soil depths of 30 inches to mother rock. Elevation ranges from 400' to 475' and the inclination is S-SE. Soils are mostly Wellsdale with some areas of Willakenzie and Peavine. All of them lie atop mother rock of fractured sandstone and siltstone. The planted acreage totals 17 acres. Vines are roughly an equal mix of Pommard clone on Riparia Gloire rootstock, 777 on 101-14 and 115 on both 101-14 and 3309. As would be expected from a vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton District the wine is very darkly colored, dense and lush. Fruits tend to be darker such as plum, cassis and black cherry.
Guadalupe Vineyard
$55.99 bottle
The vineyard was planted in 1989 and represents the definable change of the Jory soils of the Dundee Hills to the sedimentary soil of the Yamhill-Carlton District. It is spaced 7' by 5' and is planted to the Wadenswil clone. The soil, known as Willakenzie, is a well-drained shallow soil over siltstone. It lies at an elevation of 350'. The vineyard consistently produces small berries and clusters that are intensely colored. The wine possesses the character of black fruits, cocoa, leather and earth. Approximately 400 cases are produced. Jim Stonebridge and Kathleen Boeve own the vineyard. It is managed by Joel Myers.
McCrone Vineyard $55.99 bottle
Located in the Yamhill-Carlton District, this is a densely planted vineyard (1 meter x 2 meters). The sedimentary soil, know as Wellsdale, is extremely well drained and promotes early ripening. Elevation is 400' with a south-southwest inclination. Slopes are 5 to 15 degrees. Half of the vineyard was planted in 1992 to the Dijon 115 clone grafted on 3309. The second half was originally planted to Dijon Chardonnay clones but was grafted in 2000 to the Dijon 777 clone of Pinot noir. The wine from this site is powerful, dense and deeply colored focusing mainly on black fruits. Approximately 700 cases are produced. Don and Carole McCrone are the vineyard owners. Mark Gould is the vineyard manager.
Shea Vineyard $55.99 bottle
This site is in the Yamhill-Carlton District just west of the Chehalem Valley. Our fruit is sourced from three small blocks, one of which is planted to the Pommard clone, one to the Dijon 114 clone and the last to Dijon 777 clone. Soils are primarily of the Goodin and Melbourne type which are sedimentary in origin. The three blocks range in elevation from 450 to 600 feet and were planted in 1989. The wine from this vineyard has a complex array of aromas and flavors including black and red fruits, particularly blueberry, spice and earth. Approximately 725 cases are produced. The vineyard is owned by Dick and Deirdre Shea and managed by Javier Marin.

"Since I named this brand after myself, perhaps I should explain who I am. I was born and raised in the Central Valley town of Davis, California. Yes, the one with the University. My late father grew up on a farm in Colorado before moving to California and becoming a university Biochemist, so there is farming in my blood. It took a few years for wine to find me ... I studied English and American Literature for several years before settling on wine as a vocation. The first fifteen years of my winemaking career were spent making wine at Saintsbury in Carneros, where the Pinot "bug" first bit me and where I learned, or more accurately, started the lifelong process of learning the intricacies of the grape. After leaving Saintsbury in 2001, I have continued to make Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for Miura in California (where I continue to consult) and, most recently, for a new Pinot Noir/Syrah project in Casablanca, Chile named Kingston Family Vineyards. In 2005 and 2006 I started a couple of small new Pinot-centric projects in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County. I could never be a "rock star" winemaker. I'm much too ordinary for all that. I don't have a fancy winery, I haven't made wine in Burgundy, I don't appear in the society pages. I'm most comfortable knocking around in the vineyard or the cellar, trying to improve my craft, and turning out modest amounts of interesting, expressive, and, hopefully, memorable wine. The kind of wine I want to drink myself."

Patricia Green Pinot Noir 2008 Arrives Soon!

|
|
It's that time of year again and like last year in the absolute worst economic meltdown since the great depression, Patricia Green will release her latest vintage of Oregon Pinot Noir and like last year they will sell out - fast. Why? Because they are limited, extremely delicious and reasonably priced by market standards. (You'll recall that the great depression also gave rise to prohibition and the bootlegging industry... people gotta have their juice.) I will get the city's biggest allocation because I have sold more than anyone else in the city. That still is a small amount when compared to a lot of California producers. All of the factors above make her wines a no brainer for me and I hope for you too. The wines are due to arrive any day. Please e-mail or call me with your requests and I will do my best to make sure everyone gets what they've requested...

2007 Hourglass Blue Line Vineyard
The Blueline Estate is named for it's two majestic "blue line" streams - a term for significant watersheds that converge forming the vineyard. These streams have meandered for thousands of years leaving behind an ancient river bed. The gravelly soils are the signature of the vineyard's extraordinary terroir and the source of its deeply concentrated wines... The stylistic goal of Hourglass is to achieve a seamless balance of fruit concentration with the elegance of more subtle nuances driven by its terroir. Drawing from its Napa Valley origin, Hourglass has a forward depth of fruit, yet is not a "fruit bomb". Saturated mid-palate texture is again balanced by lively acidity, which rolls into a refined finish. Moderately high alcohol is balanced against integrated sweet oak, and depth of fruit. Aromatics play as important a role as texture, or flavor. Nuances of black licorice, mint, eucalyptus, earth, coffee/toffee, crème-de-cassis, and pomegranate, blend back and forth between aroma, and taste.

Terlano Müller-Thurgau 2008
(Alto Adige, Italy)
Regular Price $18.99 November Price $14.99 Muller Thurgau is a cross of Riesling and Sylvaner. Appreciated both for its amazing aromatics and unique flavors of peach and mango, this wine is fermented in stainless stell, which helps it maintain its fresh and appealing bouquet. Pale yellow in appearance with a light aromatic bouquet of tropical fruit. Dry, round and medium bodied on the palate with flavors of mango and peach balanced by crisp acidity. It has a nice weight on the palate and reminiscent of a white Rhone blend but ends with a crisp finish. Notes of jasmine, minerals, smoke and earthiness that complement its honeyed ripe fruits. Made in a generous style, it offers excellent depth as well as an added level of complexity that has developed in bottle.
Tenuta Santome Prosecco NV (Veneto, Italy)
Regular Price $13.99
November Price $12.99
Tenuta Santomè is run by the Spinazzè family with the consultancy of the well-known Prosecco's winemaker expert Marzio Pol. The winery is a model in the modern production of wines with close planting-the scrupulous selection of the grapes, first on the vines, then in the cellar, and for the use of innovative wine-making systems. Located very near the towns of Treviso and Venice, the Santomè vineyards cover an area of 60 hectares, 30 of which are located within the main estate in Biancade, and the other 30 situated on "Grave di Papadopoli," an island on the River Piave between the villages Cimadolmo and Maserada. The origin of this winery is as interesting and historical as its name. Tenuta Santomè (St. Thomas) was chosen when a missionary who was born and bred in what is now the farmhouse on the Santomè estate, wrote to the Spinazzè family from far away Brazil to suggest the name. He felt that the figure of this Saint who is often pictured with his fingers shaped like a square, an instrument for measuring, was ideally suited to "seal" the events and products of this farm. This Saint and his seal represents the history of the Spinazzè family and Tenuta Santomè, its land, and the excellent wines that come from it. We though this little sparkler would be a perfect wine for the Thanksgiving holiday. It is an Extra-Dry Prosecco so it's got a touch more residual sugar than Brut but I don't think most people would notice beacause it's so incredibly refreshing. I am almost embarrassed to admit that the bottle was gone before I knew what happened.
Villa Pillo "Chighialino" 2008
(Tuscany, Italy) Regular Price $12.99 October Price $11.99 Villa Pillo is a traditional Tuscan Farm, founded in Medieval Times, mentioned in many historical documents. It is located in the heart of the Chianti area, equidistant from the Cities of Pisa, Florence and Siena. The wine, composed by 65% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, as been named because of the funny animal represented on the label. A dressed wild boar with a grape on his hand. It's a nice label for representing our tuscan region. The intention is to do a product easy to drink with the complexity and roundness of French varieties, without loosing the flavour and fresh quality of traditional Tuscan wine. Thanks to the particular attention of the blend, they've obtained a wine with a medium dark colour with vibrant flavour and aromas, a pleasant wine to drink even if young. Every varieties did the fermentation separately anf after the Cigalino has been aged for 6 months in French one year used barrels of Lt. 225, which contribute to enhance the elegance.
Molino di Grace Volano 2006 (Tuscany, Italy) Regular Price $18.99 October Price $14.99
This is the 21st Century's greatest success story in Chianti country. Apparently from nowhere, two men, one American and one German, have descended on Tuscany and in five years have created one of the greatest Chianti estates. They must have had some idea what they were doing as it cannot be by accident that they settled on Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region between Florence and Siena, and home to the finest terroirs the region has to offer. The essential facts are that American entrepreneur Tim Grace settled on Tuscany and discovered the all but forgotten vineyards of Volano, just outside Panzano. Together with German banker Gerhard Hirmer the vineyard was resurrected and a new state-of-the-art winery built, then the final piece of this puzzle was brought into place: eminent oenologist Franco Bernabei was recruited to oversee the production. you can relax in the knowledge that in its short history Il Moilino di Grace has made a big impact on the Italian wine market with a string of awards from Gambero Rosso, the Italian wine bible. Volano is the perfect introduction to Molino di Grace. A simple, but beautifully made Sangiovese-based wine with a little Merlot from the hills above Lucarelli. No oak, just pure, clean Sangiovese black and red berry fruit, with light violet notes.
Velenosia Il Brecciarolo 2007
Regular Price $18.99 October Price $14.99
Velenosi Ercole's farm was established in 1984, thanks to the will of two young entrepreneurs, Angela and Ercole Velenosi. They have been operating in the wine sector for just a couple of decades, but their passion has allowed them to rapidly learn and improve their growing and winemaking techniques, create a winery with state-of-the-art and advanced equipment and produce excellent wines. Quite a few people believe that Rosso Piceno Superiore is one of the most interesting d.o.c. wines of Central Italy. Rosso Piceno is produced in a rather vast hilly area of the Marches, but it is only in a very limited zone within the province of Ascoli Piceno that this wine, made from Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes, can boast the "Superior" qualification. This is due to the special microclimatic and pedologic conditions of this territory, which extends over fourteen municipalities of this province. Since we believe in the potentials of this wine, which is also popular among foreign consumers, we have tried to make the most of them, in the observance of tradition and, at the same time, through a modern interpretation. The result is convincing: Rosso Piceno Superiore Brecciarolo is an important, full-bodied wine capable of lasting for several years, but it is also characterized by a soft and pleasant taste, thanks to the ageing in oak casks. Its perfume is complex and structured, the flavour is ample and harmonious, improving with age.
