D. Ventura Pena do Lobo
Ribeira Sacra
$19.99 bottle
One of the most stunning landscapes in Spain is located in the heart of Galiciain an area known as the Ribeira Sacra (Sacred Banks). Driving on the N-120 between Vilafranca del Bierzo and Orense you follow the river Sil as it cuts through gorgeous canyons terraced with vineyards. D. Ventura is a new project by Ramón Losada and his family utilizing old family holdings in this ancient wine growing region. Ever since the Romans inhabited the area, people have been growing grapes on the steep terraces lining the two rivers that form the Denomination. Working these lands is extremely difficult as the terraces in some areas are so steep that all the grapes have to be brought in on a dumb waiter. All farming is done by hand and Ramón, with the help of Gerardo Mendez (Do Ferreiro), changed the farming techniques to incorporate a more natural approach. In addition to an organic approach to farming, winemaking has also changed. Only indigenous yeast is used to start fermentation. None of the wines are filtered or cold stabilized. Lastly, the maturation of the grapes is watched carefully to insure that the grapes are fully mature when harvested. The Pena do Lobo is 100% Mencia, a grape that was thought to have evolved from Cabernet Franc. On the nose you get deep, lush fruit aromas with hints of black licorice. The palate is plush with more mineral overtones framed by dense stony fruit flavors.

Greetings!
Hello again sports fans. Another challenging week behind us. Last night's Orin Swift dinner came off well; the food was great and everyone had a good time. Thanks to everyone that attended. But I tell you if they invent any more technology to my my life easier I don't think I can stand it. Between the Internet, cell phones, crackberrys, e-mail, Facebook and the like it's wearing me out. It's hard to unplug. These days if you don't immediately get back to someone they freak out.."OMG are you ok? You didn't answer my e-mail and I thought something must be wrong???" Folks don't you ever want to just unplug yourself from the grid once in awhile? I know I do. No problem finding something to do in my free time.. There are some good things that come from all this static though. I'm not knocking the Internet though, it's been a great boost to our business and Facebook has become the way I keep up with everyone near and far. That's why I try to make this weekly newsletter an electronic version of a York peppermint patty. You know, falling backward into an icy cool swimming pool... Ahhhhh!
You remember Mundy, the great Irish Singer-songwriter that I featured a few months back? Well he friended me on Facebook last week... how cool is that? Not a Mundy fan page or record label site but the guy himself... Turns out he loves to eat hot porridge for breakfast and just became a father this week. He may even subscribe to this newsletter for all I know??? That could never have happened ten years ago... This new media is a powerful tool for democratization, kinda of like the new town square except this town square is the entire world (except for backward authoritarian places like Iran and China but that's changing fast, trust me.) I surprisingly got nothing but positive feedback from my Bastille Day rant which is a good thing. I think we're all slowly realizing that we're in this big world together. Somebody sneezes in China and we catch a cold here. As you know we're all about wine at the shop but I like to use this little square of information to chill and say what's on my mind. Trust me it's a lot better that me being out in public. I 've heard some of my competitors say it's too long (thanks for thinking that I'm important enough to keep up with...) but I say no it's just right. That's what the scroll bar is for. Mainly it's about wine but wine doesn't exist as a thing in and of itself. It's something you have with your meal but it's also much more. I like to have it with music. If fact why don't you go pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine and check out this video. It's a young Scotsman (what is it with the UK and great music?) named Paolo Nutini. He sounds like a candy bar but he's much more. A fourth generation Scot, his dad's family was originally from Tuscany. He left the family fish and chips business to pursue his love of music and it wasn't long till people took notice. This is the single from his new album "Sunny Side Up" and it's called "Candy." You can throw all your John Mayer CD's in the trash right now. This guy's got soul. I just can't play this song enough and I think it'll get under your skin as well. He's already pretty big in Europe but he will be will be alot bigger I'm guessing...

COMING IN AUGUST!!!
TORBRECK WINE DINNER
Monday August 17th 2009

Special Guest: David Powell, Wwner and Chief Winemaker of Torbreck
Time: 7:00 PM
$75.00 per person plus tax and gratuity
|
|
Torbreck founder David Powell was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. While he was immersed in the study of Economics at Adelaide University, an uncle introduced him to wine, and young Dave realized that grapes could be more intriguing than numbers. He began spending more and more of his spare time in the Barossa Valley. . David became convinced that a market existed for old vine wines influenced by the classic Rhône styles. It can be said that the Torbreck portfolio offers the best of both worlds, old and new. David Powell is a passionate believer in the Barossa Valley and its viticultural heritage. His approach to grapegrowing and winemaking melds the region's terroir with its traditional winemaking practices. In so doing he has achieved a style that fuses his love for the Barossa with his admiration for the Northern and Southern Rhône valleys. We're excited to be hosting a dinner with the man whom many consider to be one of the greatest living winemakers on the planet....

THE JULY FAB FIVE...
|
|
Receive an additional 15% off when you buy a mixed or solid case these wines - on top of the regular bottle discount!
There are a few new wine vendors in town with some truly exciting and quaffable European wines at recession prices. This month we want you to make the acquaintance of Haw River Wine Man, once very much a one-man operation out of the town of Haw River NC, now a six-man-and-one-woman operation out of Burlington. These days, Haw River Wine Man is well-known for carrying the Neal Rosenthal portfolio, rich in top-quality Burgundies and Barolos (also available at your favorite wine shop, of course), but this month's Fab Five gives a snapshot of how the company began: focused on bringing quality Italian wine at affordable prices to North Carolina.
Bidoli Pinot Grigio 2008
Reg. Price $12.99
Discount Price $10.99
What can we say about this wine? It's a fairly large winery that looks more like a concentration camp than a winery. It produces a fairly large volume of wine and pretty much goes against everything we stand for at the Wine Shop but it proves one point: you're never too old to learn something new. Man, this wine tastes like a much more expensive wine! It's got body and viscosity, depth of flavor, acidity, balance - and it's cheap. How does the saying go? Given enough time, a monkey with a typewriter can turn out Shakespeare? This wine may not be Shakespeare but it damn sure is "Harry Potter." Check it out. Great for this weekend's outdoor cook-outs and bar-b-ques.
.
Discount Price $7.99
Those of you who have come by to taste the many new wines by the glass we added this week may already have fond memories of the Verdicchio by Garofoli, "Macrina." Antica Osteria is the Garofoli family's second label, and a major source of value. The bianco's nose is fruity and floral, but the palate is clean and dry. It's a simple wine with a great price. Try it tonight with an appetizer of grilled shrimp skewers and spicy dipping sauce (see below for a second course with another Garofoli wine). Vecchia Torre Leverano Rosato 2008
Reg Price $10.99
Thank goodness Haw River got more Leverano Rosato in this year than last year! A short 2008 shipment left angry mobs of thirsty fans combing NC wine stores for this trusty value rose, but there was none to be found! Poor wine store clerks near and far suddenly had a new and deeper understanding of the plight of Old Mother Hubbard and her bare cupboard. We don't predict such dire shortages this year, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't stock up. In my experience, this fresh and juicy wine is the first to disappear at summer parties. Join the growing throng of Charlotte winos who have learned that there's more to pink wine than White Zinfandel.
Garofoli Rosso Piceno "Colle Ambro" 2005
Reg Price $13.99
Discount Price $12.99
Gianluca Garofoli, the fifth generation of his family to make wine at this Marche (the upper calf of Italy's boot) estate, now brings us a tasty blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano. Characterized by lots of forward red fruit, it has a compelling animal undertone as well. If there is a pizza god, that's who's responsible for this wine being on the planet.
Abbona Barbera d'Alba "Rinaldi" 2004
Reg Price $22.99
Discount Price $19.99
Zinfandel drinkers everywhere will find something to love in this fruit-driven Barbera from Marziano Abbona and his two daughters. The layers of rich fruit will ably complement anything from breaded and baked chicken thighs to braised short ribs to grilled ribeye (vegetarians will also have success with marinated grilled or broiled portobello mushroom caps stuffed with toasted hazelnuts and gorgonzola dolce). |
