SUMMER  OUTDOOR GRILLING & BARBECUE WINES!
"Are you Man (or women) enough to drink these wines???"

It drives me crazy to have all the thousands of different wines at our disposal and to have customers come in and tell me "I'm grilling out tonight... What  kind of wine should I have with my meal???" I will suggest a few good pairings and they'll say " Maybe I should have the Runquist Petite Sirah?" No you shouldn't. Not when it's 90 degrees outside! You need wines that are refreshing and wines that have acidity to work as a foil to all the fatty rich grilled foods your preparing. I've picked a few of my favorite wines that are just that... Crisp, balanced and refreshing. You will be blown away by just how well these wines go down and you'll probably say to yourself "That Conrad is a friggin' genius!" It's OK... just enjoy... it's what we do here. Isn't nice to break out of the same old routine?

Jean Paul Brun FRV 1000 2008
$19.99 bottle

It's pink! That's right and I'm a real man and I love this stuff! Bubbles make me smile and this wine makes me smile a lot. It's 100% Gamay made by méthode ancestrale. It's crisp and fruit forward and goes down oh so easily. They never get much of this wine in NC so I try to buy all I can. The name's a play on phonetic pronunciations which in French comes off as "effervescent." French humor I'm not so big on but French wine...
Oui! Pop a bottle of this with your guests and watch their eyes light up as they taste it...

Avinyó Vi D'Agulla Rosado 2008
$14.99 bottle

"From the must of the flower and with the rigor of a work well crafted" is the Nadal Family's  motto for their
Avinyó wines. While this Catalan saying may only grace bottles of  Avinyó's Cavas, the philosophy it expresses of creating great wine through hard work and delicate handling of the finest natural juice is applied to all of their wines including the fresh, young Vi D'Agulla. This "prickly wine" is made from free run juice that has undergone secondary fermentation in tank to give it the signature spritz that makes it so much fun to drink. This slight effervescence combined with the crisp, fresh flavor and low alcohol content makes Vin D'Agulla the ideal wine for Summer gatherings. Drink it just like the Nadal family does at home, at a picnic or a cookout with friends on a warm summer day.

Camillo Donati Lambrusco 2008
$20.99 bottle

You remember the Riunite commercials back in the 70s with everyone trying to hook up with the cheesy Italian guy in the white suit..." Hey Aldo!" That did for Lambrusco what Liefraumilch did for German Wine. Well this ain't Riunite I'm hear to tell you. What it is is a immensely delicious wine that's slightly frizzante from it's natural fermentation in bottle. Lambruscos are meant to be drunk simply as you would a refreshing beer or cider at cold temperature (even the red) with simple foods. They go particular well with cold cuts, prosciutto and dry sausages and gnocchi. There's a reason that this wine comes from Emilia Romagna, Italy's culinary capital.

Happy Bastille Day!!!

Me being the habitual  "pot stirrer"  just love to push the  buttons on all you rabid French-Haters out there. Why? Because French- hating is un-American at it's core and it makes us a little people. I really don't understand how anyone can just dismiss a whole culture with a broad stroke. I've always been of the mind that there's many different points of view and all have validity depending on your perspective. Waving the tri-color to some people is the equivalent waving a poster of President Obama at a Klu Klux Klan rally. So why the French? We get along with the Germans (remember the Nazis?) and doesn't matter that the British tried unsuccessfully to  reclaim the colonies through invasion. We don't hate them. And let's not forget the Japanese. After WWII they became one of our biggest allies in Asia. We don't even have a problem buying the majority of our goods from a country like China where it's citizens are forced to work a slave wages and human rights are trampled daily. So why the French? They're arrogant you say? Have you been to New York City, Philadelpia or Boston lately? Afraid to fight, we saved them in the war? Their help both militarily and financially allowed our country to win it's independence from England.  Why do you think Ben Franklin spent so much time there? The way I see it we're even. The press in particular love to bash them. (Bill O 'Reilly and Jay Leno have built careers out of those cliches. )  Could it be that they actually think for themselves on occasion and can't be bullied into going along with something they don't agree with? We can't always have our way in the world.Like it or not those days are over. Is that unpatriotic? I don't think so. My family has been here for over four hundred years and fought and died in every conflict this country has gotten into. That's why I have the right to think freely. So why get mad when someone else does the same. As a retailer and lover of French wine  I find it particularly frustrating. I don't carry French wine because I agree with the French politically. I carry it because it tastes wonderful and it's produced (in most cases) by small family-run businesses who do what they do because it's what they've always done. They don't care about politics, Saddam Hussein, Dick Cheney or globalization. They just want make and sell their wines to people who will appreciate them. I've traveled to France several times and I'm hear to tell you... they're not  so much different than anywhere else in the world. That's true just about everywhere. Anytime I find this spirit of hate-mongering around there's always someone or group that stands to benefit from it. So what I'm saying on this day of French Independence (a day inspired by our own Revolution which was in-turn inspired by the great French thinkers like Voltaire and Rousseau. ) don't believe everything you hear or read. That's what we as Americans are famous for... going our own way. Don't be shocked when other cultures decide to follow our example and do the same. That's what we're known for. I as a retailer and soapbox speaker will be doing the same by bringing you some of the world's best wines. Jeanne Courteaud will be pouring a selection French wines tonight at our free Tuesday night tasting in honor of Bastille Day. If my argument is not enough here's an open letter that I found on the Internet that argues in favor of France's great contributions to world culture...

An open letter to French-haters
April 8, 2008 by Recovering Baptist

People, people PLEASE. Why must you hate on the French? They are so awesome! If it weren't for the french, we would not have the croissandwich. And really, I think I could stop there. But instead, I will point out other great contributions from our french freres.
*Amelie (seriously, there is a lot of great french film)
*Mousse. And creme brulee. And eclairs. And.... screw it... PASTRY. ALL PASTRY.
*Descartes
*Neckerchiefs
*Chanel
*Tongue kissing. Yes. They invented it. Do not question me.
*Bidets
*The Can-Can
*Berets
*The phrases "c'est la vie" and "que sera sera". Which kind of ultimately makes them responsible for the careers of Doris Day and Robbie Neville. As well as a good part of David Sedaris' career.
*Cameras
*CHEESE
*Champagne... and wine..... and absinthe.... screw it.... BOOZE.
*Jerry Lewis jokes

And don't throw that whole WWII German crap at me. If it weren't for the French? We would have lost the American Revolution and we'd all be spelling "honor" and "color" with a U in them! Is that what you want? You want bad teeth and soccer riots? DO YOU?
You lay off the French! I mean it!!

COMING IN AUGUST!!!

TORBRECK WINE DINNER

Monday August 17th 2009

Special Guest: David Powell, Wwner and Chief Winemaker of Torbreck

Time: 7:00 PM
$75.00 per person plus tax and gratuity

Torbreck founder David Powell was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. While he was immersed in the study of Economics at Adelaide University, an uncle introduced him to wine, and young Dave realized that grapes could be more intriguing than numbers. He began spending more and more of his spare time in the Barossa Valley.  . David became convinced that a market existed for old vine wines influenced by the classic Rhône styles. It can be said that the Torbreck portfolio offers the best of both worlds, old and new. David Powell is a passionate believer in the Barossa Valley and its viticultural heritage. His approach to grapegrowing and winemaking melds the region's terroir with its traditional winemaking practices. In so doing he has achieved a style that fuses his love for the Barossa with his admiration for the Northern and Southern Rhône valleys. We're excited to be hosting a dinner with the man whom many consider to be one of the greatest living winemakers on the planet....

THE JULY FAB FIVE...

Receive an additional 15% off when you buy a mixed or solid case these wines - on top of the regular bottle discount!

There are a few new wine vendors in town with some truly exciting and quaffable European wines at recession prices.  This month we want you to make the acquaintance of Haw River Wine Man, once very much a one-man operation out of the town of Haw River NC, now a six-man-and-one-woman operation out of Burlington.  These days, Haw River Wine Man is well-known for carrying the Neal Rosenthal portfolio, rich in top-quality Burgundies and Barolos (also available at your favorite wine shop, of course), but this month's Fab Five gives a snapshot of how the company began: focused on bringing quality Italian wine at affordable prices to North Carolina.

Bidoli Pinot Grigio 2008
 Reg. Price $12.99
                               Discount Price $10.99
What can we say about this wine? It's a fairly large winery that looks more like a concentration camp than a winery. It produces a fairly large volume of wine and pretty much goes against everything we stand for at the Wine Shop but it proves one point: you're never too old to learn something new. Man, this wine tastes like a much more expensive wine! It's got body and viscosity, depth of flavor, acidity, balance - and it's cheap. How does the saying go? Given enough time, a monkey with a typewriter can turn out Shakespeare? This wine may not be Shakespeare but it damn sure is "Harry Potter." Check it out. Great for this weekend's outdoor cook-outs and bar-b-ques.
 .
  Antica Osteria Bianco

 Reg. Price $8.99
Discount Price $7.99

Those of you who have come by to taste the many new wines by the glass we added this week may already have fond memories of the Verdicchio by Garofoli, "Macrina."  Antica Osteria is the Garofoli family's second label, and a major source of value.  The bianco's nose is fruity and floral, but the palate is clean and dry.  It's a simple wine with a great price.  Try it tonight with an appetizer of grilled shrimp skewers and spicy dipping sauce (see below for a second course with another Garofoli wine).

  Vecchia Torre Leverano Rosato 2008

Reg Price $10.99
Discount Price $8.99

Thank goodness Haw River got more Leverano Rosato in this year than last year!  A short 2008 shipment left angry mobs of thirsty fans combing NC wine stores for this trusty value rose, but there was none to be found!  Poor wine store clerks near and far suddenly had a new and deeper understanding of the plight of Old Mother Hubbard and her bare cupboard.  We don't predict such dire shortages this year, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't stock up.  In my experience, this fresh and juicy wine is the first to disappear at summer parties.  Join the growing throng of Charlotte winos who have learned that there's more to pink wine than White Zinfandel.

Garofoli Rosso Piceno  "Colle Ambro" 2005

Reg Price $13.99
Discount Price $12.99

Gianluca Garofoli, the fifth generation of his family to make wine at this Marche (the upper calf of Italy's boot) estate, now brings us a tasty blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano.  Characterized by lots of forward red fruit, it has a compelling animal undertone as well.  If there is a pizza god, that's who's responsible for this wine being on the planet.

 Abbona Barbera d'Alba "Rinaldi" 2004

Reg Price $22.99
Discount Price $19.99

Zinfandel drinkers everywhere will find something to love in this fruit-driven Barbera from Marziano Abbona and his two daughters.  The layers of rich fruit will ably complement anything from breaded and baked chicken thighs to braised short ribs to grilled ribeye (vegetarians will also have success with marinated grilled or broiled portobello mushroom caps stuffed with toasted hazelnuts and gorgonzola dolce).

At the Wine Shop at Foxcroft our goal is to provide you with Charlotte's best selection of quality wines and beers at competitive prices. Great service is what we strive for so if there's anything you're looking for: that difficult vintage, a special gift, whateve, don't hesitate to contact us with your requests.  We look forward to seeing you in the shop...

Sincerely,

Conrad, Crystal, and all the
