Avinyó Vi D'Agulla Rosado 2008 $14.99 bottle
"From the must of the flower and with the rigour of a work well crafted" is the Nadal Family's motto for their Avinyó wines. While this Catalan saying may only grace bottles of Avinyó's Cavas, the philosophy it expresses of creating great wine through hard work and delicate handling of the finest natural juice is applied to all of their wines including the fresh, young Vi D'Agulla. This "prickly wine" is made from free run juice that has undergone secondary fermentation in tank to give it the signature spritz that makes it so much fun to drink. This slight effervescence combined with the crisp, fresh flavor and low alcohol content makes Vin D'Agulla the ideal wine for Summer gatherings. Drink it just like the Nadal family does at home, at a picnic or a cookout with friends on a warm summer day.
Tasting Notes -Bright red fruits combine with honeysuckle aromas. On the palate the wine is fresh with a rich lingering finish. 100% free run Merlot.

Greetings!
Well in keeping with tradition last week was one of the slowest weeks in retail. That's both good and bad. Bad for us from a sales standpoint but good in that everyone is getting over their reluctance and taking time off for holiday. In other words business as usual. But we're sure glad to see you back. We had a great turn-out for our South African wine dinner last Tuesday. I think everyone will agree that today South Africa is making some of the world's best wines. The Holiday is behind us now and the dog days of Summer are upon us. No one wants to move very fast and we're all trying to just get by without exerting too much energy. We've put together a couple exciting wine dinners for July and August to make the Summer a little more interesting. We've also got some great wine suggestions for quenching your Summer thirst as well. I think I'll keep it short this week. I'm feeling a bit lazy and there's lots of work to do at the Shop. We'll see you there. I do want to leave you with this thought...

Here's a song that captures the feeling perfectly. Frank Sinatra's " The Summer Wind" harkens back to an innocent and carefree time before the Internet, CNN and cell phones. Coincidentally it was all so the opening track in 1984s "The Pope of Greenwich Village" one on Mickey Rourke's great performances. There'st that great stickball scene in the movie's opening shots. I think I'm beginning to pick up a theme in my writing. I guess it's Mickey Rourke month at the Wine Shop. Ah nostalgia...
Here's an old trailer for you.Thank God for Youtube. Everything old is new again? Check out the Members Only jacket on Eric Roberts...

COMING IN AUGUST!!!
TORBRECK WINE DINNER
Monday August 17th 2009

Special Guest: David Powell, Wwner and Chief Winemaker of Torbreck
Time: 7:00 PM
$75.00 per person plus tax and gratuity
|
|
Torbreck founder David Powell was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. While he was immersed in the study of Economics at Adelaide University, an uncle introduced him to wine, and young Dave realized that grapes could be more intriguing than numbers. He began spending more and more of his spare time in the Barossa Valley. . David became convinced that a market existed for old vine wines influenced by the classic Rhône styles. It can be said that the Torbreck portfolio offers the best of both worlds, old and new. David Powell is a passionate believer in the Barossa Valley and its viticultural heritage. His approach to grapegrowing and winemaking melds the region's terroir with its traditional winemaking practices. In so doing he has achieved a style that fuses his love for the Barossa with his admiration for the Northern and Southern Rhône valleys. We're excited to be hosting a dinner with the man whom many consider to be one of the greatest living winemakers on the planet....

THE JULY FAB FIVE...
|
|
Receive an additional 15% off when you buy a mixed or solid case these wines - on top of the regular bottle discount!
There are a few new wine vendors in town with some truly exciting and quaffable European wines at recession prices. This month we want you to make the acquaintance of Haw River Wine Man, once very much a one-man operation out of the town of Haw River NC, now a six-man-and-one-woman operation out of Burlington. These days, Haw River Wine Man is well-known for carrying the Neal Rosenthal portfolio, rich in top-quality Burgundies and Barolos (also available at your favorite wine shop, of course), but this month's Fab Five gives a snapshot of how the company began: focused on bringing quality Italian wine at affordable prices to North Carolina.
Bidoli Pinot Grigio 2008
Reg. Price $12.99
Discount Price $10.99
What can we say about this wine? It's a fairly large winery that looks more like a concentration camp than a winery. It produces a fairly large volume of wine and pretty much goes against everything we stand for at the Wine Shop but it proves one point: you're never too old to learn something new. Man, this wine tastes like a much more expensive wine! It's got body and viscosity, depth of flavor, acidity, balance - and it's cheap. How does the saying go? Given enough time, a monkey with a typewriter can turn out Shakespeare? This wine may not be Shakespeare but it damn sure is "Harry Potter." Check it out. Great for this weekend's outdoor cook-outs and bar-b-ques.

Discount Price $7.99
Those of you who have come by to taste the many new wines by the glass we added this week may already have fond memories of the Verdicchio by Garofoli, "Macrina." Antica Osteria is the Garofoli family's second label, and a major source of value. The bianco's nose is fruity and floral, but the palate is clean and dry. It's a simple wine with a great price. Try it tonight with an appetizer of grilled shrimp skewers and spicy dipping sauce (see below for a second course with another Garofoli wine). Vecchia Torre Leverano Rosato 2008
Reg Price $10.99
Thank goodness Haw River got more Leverano Rosato in this year than last year! A short 2008 shipment left angry mobs of thirsty fans combing NC wine stores for this trusty value rose, but there was none to be found! Poor wine store clerks near and far suddenly had a new and deeper understanding of the plight of Old Mother Hubbard and her bare cupboard. We don't predict such dire shortages this year, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't stock up. In my experience, this fresh and juicy wine is the first to disappear at summer parties. Join the growing throng of Charlotte winos who have learned that there's more to pink wine than White Zinfandel.
Garofoli Rosso Piceno "Colle Ambro" 2005
Reg Price $13.99
Discount Price $12.99
Gianluca Garofoli, the fifth generation of his family to make wine at this Marche (the upper calf of Italy's boot) estate, now brings us a tasty blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano. Characterized by lots of forward red fruit, it has a compelling animal undertone as well. If there is a pizza god, that's who's responsible for this wine being on the planet.
Abbona Barbera d'Alba "Rinaldi" 2004
Reg Price $22.99
Discount Price $19.99
Zinfandel drinkers everywhere will find something to love in this fruit-driven Barbera from Marziano Abbona and his two daughters. The layers of rich fruit will ably complement anything from breaded and baked chicken thighs to braised short ribs to grilled ribeye (vegetarians will also have success with marinated grilled or broiled portobello mushroom caps stuffed with toasted hazelnuts and gorgonzola dolce). |
