Schloss Gobelsberg Gruner Veltliner "Renner" 2007
This wine has been a perennial favorite of mine for many years now and I just got the opportunity to try the 2007 Saturday night at a dinner party.
Schloss Gobelsburg is a historic winery, owned by the Cistercian Monks. It's made up of wonderful old vineyards. In fact it's the oldest winery in the region, founded in 1171, and it was run by the monks themselves until 1995. In 1996 winemaking and management responsibilities were taken over by Michael Moosbrugger with the advice and guidance of Willi Brundlmayer, one of my favorite Austrian winemakers. They took a soft-revisionist approach, changing the winemaking process and restructuring the vineyards, but only where necessary. The leap in quality has been dramatic. This wine has got it going on: spicier than Chardonnay but not out of place in a line up of Grand Cru Burgundies. The vines are 55 years old and the soil is gravelly. You pick up elements of that in the mouth. Then there's that tell-tale white pepper that's the sign of a great Gruner Veltliner. This wine was a perfect match for tuna tartare with avocado and wasabi vinaigrette. Don't miss it.

Greetings!
"The Wrestler"
I heard all the buzz about this movie during the Oscars ceremony but I intentionally kept myself from seeing it. I guess I was mad at Mickey Rourke for throwing away his promising career and physical health to attempt a long shot at professional boxing. Granted, he had made lots of enemies and had pretty much been black-balled by all the Hollywood establishment. It seemed like a pretty punk thing to do, but hey... those were the times. Well, the movie hit Blockbuster this week so I decided to give it a shot. Man, I was knocked out -- no pun intended! I now realize that no one but Mickey Rourke could have played this role. It was his life... It was surreal watching him play himself in an alter-ego version of his own life.
The story follows a once famous aging wrestler known as Randy The Ram (Mickey Rourke) twenty years after his glory days, who continues to peddle his broken-down body on the minor circuit while living in a trailer and working at the deli counter in a local supermarket. It was touching to watch the group of over-the-hill wrestlers that Rourke works with waiting for an ever-dwindling number of fans show up for the autograph signings during the weekend tours. It reminded me of all the big-hair rock groups from the '80s that are now nowhere and forgotten. It struck home with the choices I've made in my life as well. Rourke has a heart attack while he comes to realize that he has made a mess of his life and makes attempts not only to reconcile with his estranged daughter but also to pursue a relationship with the stripper he has quietly fallen in love with (Marisa Tomei). She too is beginning to feel her age. Watching her get turned down for lap dances by customer after customer at the strip club where she works, I was struck by the sadness of their two lives but also how similar they were. Two lonely people trying to connect to something that's real and won't fade. There's a moment where you think that they might make it but that hope gets dashed pretty quickly. The movie is dark, bleak, and unrelenting. It's also realistic story about dreams both real and broken, pride and the desire to stand on one's own two feet, no matter what. There's something everyone can relate to in this film. At times there are some horrific scenes that may shock some but there's also humor a just a glimmer of hope. It's so intense and I promise you that you won't come away unmoved...
And on a happier note..(Pun intended)
Shane Nicholson

I first heard Shane Nicholson four years ago on XM radio's new artist show. (Outside of WFAE I haven't used terrestrial radio for six years...) I was immediately hooked but had to buy the CD as an import. His first album had a striking resemblance to Neil Finn from Crowded House, another of my all-time favorites. Shane Nicholson is an Australian singer songwriter, who previously fronted the band, Pretty Violet Stain. They were poised to make a big splash in the US but were dropped at the last minute. (Notice a common theme here with the Record Labels?) If you don't know him you owe it to yourself to check out his music. His latest effort shows the influence of his wife, fellow musician and Aussie, Kasey Chambers. He has a natural way with melody that gets under your skin. Here's an acoustic performance of his 2004 song "Perfect" from his debut album "It's a Movie."

TONIGHT!!!
Cape Classics South African Wine Dinner
Tuesday, June 30th 2009
7:00 PM
$50.00 plus tax and gratuity
Special guest: Zingo Munger
National Sales Manager |
What's the absolute best deal in town? Our wine dinners at Foxcroft of course. I don't mean to be smug but the quality of our food and the great wines we pour make this a real no brainer. We've been fans of the fantastic wines that are coming out of South Africa since the shop opened but now we really get to let the wines shine with Chef Christopher Zion's superb menu. Although there several great companies bring South African wines into the US no one has a more comprehensive portfolio of top notch producers than Cape Classics. Names like Mulderbosch and Rustenburg are synonymous with South Africa and we're excited to be hosting National Sales Manager, Zingo Munger with a dinner. He'll give us a brief history of winemaking in South Africa and walk us through the night's selections. It's going to be a good one and we can't wait to see you.

THE JULY FAB FIVE...
DUE TO THE FORTH OF JULY HOLIDAY...THESE WINES ARRIVE ON THURSDAY... |
|
Receive an additional 15% off when you buy a mixed or solid case these wines - on top of the regular bottle discount!
There are a few new wine vendors in town with some truly exciting and quaffable European wines at recession prices. This month we want you to make the acquaintance of Haw River Wine Man, once very much a one-man operation out of the town of Haw River NC, now a six-man-and-one-woman operation out of Burlington. These days, Haw River Wine Man is well-known for carrying the Neal Rosenthal portfolio, rich in top-quality Burgundies and Barolos (also available at your favorite wine shop, of course), but this month's Fab Five gives a snapshot of how the company began: focused on bringing quality Italian wine at affordable prices to North Carolina.
Bidoli Pinot Grigio 2008
Reg. Price $12.99
Discount Price $10.99
What can we say about this wine? It's a fairly large winery that looks more like a concentration camp than a winery. It produces a fairly large volume of wine and pretty much goes against everything we stand for at the Wine Shop but it proves one point: you're never too old to learn something new. Man, this wine tastes like a much more expensive wine! It's got body and viscosity, depth of flavor, acidity, balance - and it's cheap. How does the saying go? Given enough time, a monkey with a typewriter can turn out Shakespeare? This wine may not be Shakespeare but it damn sure is "Harry Potter." Check it out. Great for this weekend's outdoor cook-outs and bar-b-ques.
.
Discount Price $7.99
Those of you who have come by to taste the many new wines by the glass we added this week may already have fond memories of the Verdicchio by Garofoli, "Macrina." Antica Osteria is the Garofoli family's second label, and a major source of value. The bianco's nose is fruity and floral, but the palate is clean and dry. It's a simple wine with a great price. Try it tonight with an appetizer of grilled shrimp skewers and spicy dipping sauce (see below for a second course with another Garofoli wine). Vecchia Torre Leverano Rosato 2008
Reg Price $10.99
Thank goodness Haw River got more Leverano Rosato in this year than last year! A short 2008 shipment left angry mobs of thirsty fans combing NC wine stores for this trusty value rose, but there was none to be found! Poor wine store clerks near and far suddenly had a new and deeper understanding of the plight of Old Mother Hubbard and her bare cupboard. We don't predict such dire shortages this year, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't stock up. In my experience, this fresh and juicy wine is the first to disappear at summer parties. Join the growing throng of Charlotte winos who have learned that there's more to pink wine than White Zinfandel.
Garofoli Rosso Piceno "Colle Ambro" 2005
Reg Price $13.99
Discount Price $12.99
Gianluca Garofoli, the fifth generation of his family to make wine at this Marche (the upper calf of Italy's boot) estate, now brings us a tasty blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano. Characterized by lots of forward red fruit, it has a compelling animal undertone as well. If there is a pizza god, that's who's responsible for this wine being on the planet.
Abbona Barbera d'Alba "Rinaldi" 2004
Reg Price $22.99
Discount Price $19.99
Zinfandel drinkers everywhere will find something to love in this fruit-driven Barbera from Marziano Abbona and his two daughters. The layers of rich fruit will ably complement anything from breaded and baked chicken thighs to braised short ribs to grilled ribeye (vegetarians will also have success with marinated grilled or broiled portobello mushroom caps stuffed with toasted hazelnuts and gorgonzola dolce). |

COMING IN AUGUST!!!
TORBRECK WINE DINNER
Monday August 17th 2009

Special Guest: David Powell, owner and chief winemaker of Torbreck
|
|
Torbreck founder David Powell was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. His father was a chartered accountant and, like it or not, Dave soon found himself on a similar career path. However, while he was immersed in the study of Economics at Adelaide University, an uncle introduced him to wine, and young Dave realized that grapes could be more intriguing than numbers. He began spending more and more of his spare time in the Barossa Valley and during the winters, he availed himself of the opportunity to venture overseas to work harvests in both California and Italy. He traveled throughout the famous wine regions of Europe and even spent time in Scotland as a lumberjack. This experience was instrumental in illuminating the unique attributes of the Barossa, at a time when others felt this heritage was past its sell-by date. Finding work at Rockford in the Barossa Valley, he became steeped in the traditional culture of the region and in the early 1990s the idea of owning his own winery began to take shape. David was saddened by the vinous devastation caused by the mid-1980s government sponsored 'Vine Pull' scheme but in working with Rockford's Robert O'Callaghan, he became convinced that a market existed for old vine wines influenced by the classic Rhône styles. Lacking deep pockets (but inspired nonetheless), he set about approaching local landowners concerning their neglected properties. Dave nurtured these old, lifeless, and overgrown vineyards back to health in his spare time. Bringing this old practice of share-farming back to the Barossa subsequently secured for him a regular supply of fruit from the best Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro vineyards, including a few hectares of what are thought to be among the oldest grapevines on the planet. In return for his "sweat equity," Powell's efforts were rewarded with a few parcels of dry-grown fruit, and he turned these "wages" into the first bottles of Torbreck.
As these first vintages lay in barrel, Dave thought back to his experiences overseas and realized that the growers of the Barossa Valley had overlooked the suitability of the French white Rhône varieties. Seeking to rectify this oversight, he purchased 30 acres of land in Marananga in 1994 for the purpose of planting Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier. Shiraz was included in the mix in what is now known as the Descendant Vineyard, also the site of the new Torbreck winery. Other acquisitions (including a one-hundred-year-old vineyard that had previously been share-farmed) soon followed, and Torbreck continues to follow the path of sourcing the best fruit possible from its own vineyards and those of selected growers in the region. It can be said that the Torbreck portfolio offers the best of both worlds, old and new. David Powell is a passionate believer in the Barossa Valley and its viticultural heritage. His approach to grapegrowing and winemaking melds the region's terroir with its traditional winemaking practices. In so doing he has achieved a style that fuses his love for the Barossa with his admiration for the Northern and Southern Rhône valleys.
