Conrad's Pick:
Hirsch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
$72.99 bottle
Last week I tasted what may be one of if not the best California Pinot Noir I have had in a long time. You may not know them, their first vintage was in 2002 but they've been behind the scenes growing and selling top notch Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to some of the biggest names in California including Kistler Marcassin, and Liparita to name a few. Their vineyards overlook the ocean at Fort Ross and truly reflect the character of The Sonoma Coast. The San Andreas Fault has assured that the soils there are multi-layered and complex and that is translated into their wine in spades. The wines are big and voluptuous without sacrificing finesse and balance. The acidity and structure are there for ample aging but I doubt you will be able to keep your hands off of them. Hirsch are doing everything right with attention to terroir and reflection of site, hand harvesting and sorting and use of native yeasts(the realwinemakers!) Don't miss this one...
Crystal's Pick: Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett 2007
$25.99
Bodegas Willi Shaefer is one of the most gifted and celebrated producers in the Mosel and has a cult following around the world. This 2007 Kabinett is a perfect example of why that is so. The wine is sublime with excellent clarity of fruit and mineral, fruit and balance of acidity. A perfect example of why Riesling is undeniably the world's greatest white wine. Stone fruit, citrus and green apple float perfectly on top of a cool stoney minerality that make this wine shine. Pure, clean and simple to those just beginning to explore Riesling's pleasures but it also holds deep treasures for those willing to ask further. Pairs well with soft cheese, foie gras and desserts. The ultimate food wine.
Ian's Pick: Fanti Flavio La Palazetta Brunello di Montalcino 2003 $44.99
So, are you sick of people getting caught up with powerhouse Brunellos that taste more like Amarone? If you are anything like me, you'll enjoy this Brunello for it tastes like Brunello. On the nose its loaded with tobacco, spice, white flowers and black fruit while the palate gives layers of tar, fruit and smoke. The wine shows the character of Brunello and makes you understand why the US Government banned the "Super Clone" and Syrah infused Brunellos a year ago. This is a brunello for those who love Italian indigenous vartietals and complexity over muscle.
Susannah's Pick:
Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera d'Alba 2007 $16.99
I love this wine for its pleasantly biting acidity, typical of Barbera, alongside the equally characteristic abundance of fruit. This wine may be from Italy, but it was made to go with a Southern-style pulled pork plate with all the fixings. Try a bottle and see why Barbera is the number one wine that Italians love to drink.

Boutari Moschofilero 2007 Reg. Price $18.99
Discount Price $15.99
For years Boutari Moschofilero has been an important selling white wine in Greece and, until recently, a virtual unknown in the United States. This wine is produced from 100% Moschofilero grapes grown in high elevation vineyards in the AOC region of Mantinia in the Peloponnese. That was until Tony Terlato discovered it in a blind tasting at Paterno Wines International's corporate headquarters. From his first sip, he believed this little gem, so rich in flavor, was a secret just waiting to be discovered in the United States. Boutari Moschofilero's explosion in sales supports his initial prediction; national press, leading restaurateurs, wine retailers and consumers across the country have embraced this crisp, refreshing white wine with enticing citrus, floral and melon aromas. This is a perfect wine to break your summertime Chardonnay addiction and a perfect patio sipper or companion to seafood. .
Acre Chardonnay 2008
(Central Coast) Reg. Price $18.99
Discount Price $14.99
Santa Barbara County is a stunningly beautiful wine region and is responsible for some of the world's finest Chardonnays. Acre Chardonnay is produced from fruit from two ideally situated vineyards in Los Alamos Valley in the northern part of the county. Temperate climate and cool nights produce grapes with wonderfully concentrated, balanced fruit flavors. Bright tropical aromas of lime, kiwi and even lychee fruit are present complemented by citrus zest and well integrated oak tones. A very smooth Chardonnay with mouthfilling weight that's sure to please everyone. This wine is so new I couldn't find a picture on the web.The bottle is beautiful though; think Far Niente. If you're looking for a wine that won't break the bank then look no further than Acre. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed...
Craggy Range Sauvignon Blanc 2008
(Te Muna Vineyard, Martinborough) Reg Price $28.99
Discount Price $19.99
As much as New Zealand Sauv Blancs get slack from the average self-styled connoisseur these days, there are stil l many shining examples of superb Sauvignon Blanc coming from this oft-forgotten isle. Craggy Range has an excellent reputation and stands as a perfect example. RIch and full-bodied with pale straw color with green hints. The aromas are of white peach, citrus and delicate tropical fruits. The mouth filling palate is awash with flavors of fresh apple, nectarine, lime and tropical notes. The flavors are underlined by fine supporting acidity and a chalky texture that leads into a very long, rich and clean lime and passionfruit finish.
Michel Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes du Rhône 2005 (Rhone Valley)
Reg Price $16.99
Discount Price $13.99
This blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah is a garnet red color. On the nose, there are red fruit aromas, mainly Morello cherries. In the mouth: well-structured, with sustained tannins. Recommended with all grilled or roast meats. The vineyards of the red Côtes du Rhône Belleruche covers 4 departments (Drôme,Vaucluse, Gard and Ardèche) on different soils (clay and calcareous alluvial deposit terraces, clay?) giving to the Belleruche an extraordinary richness and complexity. Very smooth with the tell-tale pepper notes and raspberry aned garrigue that make CDRs so versitile and easy to enjoy.
La Braccescia Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2004 ( Tuscany)
Reg Price $18.99 Discount Price $14.99
The 2004 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the classic garnet/ruby of Tuscan Sangiovese, and the nose shows focused varietal aromas of plums and red currants, tar, and tobacco. Smooth and supple in flavor, ripe, tarry, and of good size and firmness.Made from a blend of 80% Prugnolo Gentile, 15% Canaiolo Nero and 5% Merlot, Mammolo and Colorino and grown in varied estate vineyards in Montepulciano. The wine was vinified in stainless steel tanks, racked, and completed malolactic fermentation by the end of November. A portion of the wine was aged in 20-50 Hl barrels while a small percentage was aged in 3-year-old barrique for a total of 24 months. This Vino Nobile is deep violet in color with a very intense bouquet that highlights the wine's acidity and excellent extraction. It is beautiful, clean and very big on the palate. |
