Our first cooking class at Foxcroft was a big success last Sunday and we're pleased to announce the second class which will be help on Sunday May 31st. Once again renowned Harpers Restaurant Group Executive Chef Tom Condron and Upstream's Chef de Cuisine, will take the helm at the Wine Shop at Foxcroft. Many of you are familiar with the highly successful Saturday classes that Tom has been conducting first at Mimosa Grille and later at Upstream. I'm not sure which better, the first hour's demo class of getting to eat the results the latter half? In either case the classes promise to be terrific. As you would expect each class will have a particular theme and the staff here at the Wine Shop at Foxcroft will pair some exciting wine selections with each course that Tom and Scott prepare. The cost per person for each class will be $45.00 This promises to be a great on-going event for us and an exciting way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Please call the Shop to reserve your place as seating is limited.

Wine Classes on Sundays Starting May 17th 2008 1:00 -3:00pm
Instructor: Ian Coyne, Certified Sommelier We know there's a lot of information floating out there in cyberspace and a lot of people trying to get your attention but we've had numerous request to provide a platform where you guys could learn more detailed information about wine. We're open seven days a week at The Wine Shop and we thought Sunday afternoons would be a great time for this. We also know that it's hard to commit to a long six to seven week program so we've broken our classes up into an a la carte fashion. This way there's time to focus in detail on a particular country's wine regions but not so long that the class conflicts with the other commitments in your lives. No one knows wine better than our staff and we're excited to be sharing that knowledge with you. With this format you can choose to focus on one country or more. The choice is yours. We'll be tasting some really great wines and light hors d' oeuvres will be provided. Seating is limited so call early to make your reservations... Ian Coyne, Certified Sommelier Nominated for fourteen Emmies (not really) and called America's Funniest Wine Geek by Conrad Hunter, Ian Coyne has over 15 years experience in the hospitality industry. As a sommelier, he has worked at Cassique restaurant on Kiawah Island, S.C and Doonbeg Golf Club in Ireland. While "critiquing" the pub fare in Ireland, Ian ran into a lot of pints of Guinness and a lot of great food and wine experiences that helped that to feed his passion for food and the drink. Ian's restaurant management experience includes prestigious establishments such as the Harbour Club in Charleston, S.C. and The River House at Palmetto Bluff, in Bluffton, S.C. At both locations he left a knowledgeable wine staff and a healthy bar tab. Join Ian, while we discuss the key points to the major wine regions of Italy and France. P.S. Greetings!
I'm glad last week is over. It was a lot of fun; we had a successful wine dinner, several private parties, and I covered the retail at RiverGate as well as time at Foxcroft but I came home every night and collapsed. Getting too old to burn that much midnight oil. I know some of you tell me you never see me these days but trust me when I tell you that I'm definitely putting in the hours. I need to leave the heavy lifting to the younger members of our staff and I'll stick to the pontifications and bad jokes.... Lots of good stuff below including some great tastings coming up... It's time for some music pics again....

There was a time back in the early eighties when a lot of the world, including me, really thought that America and the Soviet Union were on a collision course for mutual annihilation. I was planning on moving to New Zealand to teach English (lucky for New Zealand that I never made the move). Australia and New Zealand were among the few places on Earth that the nuclear fallout wouldn't reach in any meaningful way. One of the lonely groups who were bringing attention to this and other issues was Sydney's Midnight Oil (or "The Oils"). Through a long and distinguished career the band became known for its driving hard-rock sound, intense live performances, and political activism, particularly in aid of anti-nuclear, environmentalist, and indigenous Australians' causes.You may remember them for their big hit "Beds Are Burning." Most of their songs were very Aussie-centric (is that a real world?) but no one could deny that they were one the most intense rocking bands on the planet. "The Best of Both Worlds" was the single from their 1984 album "10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1" which introduced the group, already huge in Australia, to America. The band always led by example in a uniquely Australian way with music that was powerful, uncompromising, and - as you will hear - enduring. Here's a taste of Midnight Oil for you.

Whether French or American, organic, biodynamic, or simply a common-sense sustainable farmer, all of Vintage '59's growers are artisans striving to make the best wines of their appellations while protecting a traditional way of life. Their holistic approach requires a great deal of work in the vineyard, but it is work that is embraced because the rewards sought are not so much financial as they are personal and spiritual. The shared belief of this enlightened minority is that all of the extra effort preserves an ecological balance and results in superior fruit. Such fruit, when tempered with deft restraint in the cellar, results in superior wines. Vintage '59's growers' minimalist winemaking practices include extended lees contact to enhance texture and reduce the need for sulfur; minimal racking, fining, and filtration, all of which can strip flavor; and careful use of oak so as not to mask the individual characteristics of grape varieties or terroir. The aim is to let the wine and vineyard site speak rather than the man or marketplace. While many importers represent a worldwide variety of wines, Vintage '59 focuses on representing cutting edge wines from France- it's what excites us and it's what they know best. We're proud to have them in Charlotte for an evening of great wines. As Vintage '59 says, "perhaps the most important lesson we can provide is that even the best artisan wines don't have to cost you an arm and a leg. It requires only an open mind." The Loire is home to some of the best Sauvignon Blancs in the world, Domaine du Salvard Cheverny, a Kermit Lynch discovery comes from the Cherverny AOC (in Touraine, and just down the river from Sancerre). It's a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Chardonnay (15%) cofermented and aged on its lees. It shows a very light golden color, with just a hint of green around the edges. Lots of minerals and flint with a hint of citrus and fresh cut hay.The flavors continue to develop in the glass as the wine opens up, with tangy apples and more fresh cut hay following the minerals. The finish was amazing - very long and dry. Serve it up with lighter fish dishes, summer salads with lots of herbal flavors or anything with goat cheese as an ingredient. With the presence of Chardonnay, even a lighter cream sauce might work. Those of you that are fan of New Zealand Sauv Blancs would do well to give this one a spin.

Aurelien Houchart was an forward thinking proprietor and negociant in wine during the last century, and created one of the largest domain in Provence. Today it is owned by Genevieve, the wife of Jerome Quiot and granddaughter of was Aurélien Houchart. Today the estate produces a wide array of wines but it is one in particular that got our attention. Domaine Houchart Côtes de Provence Rosé is a blend of 35% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 20% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% other grape varieties. is a blend of 35% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 20% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% other grape varieties.This is exactly what a rosé should be. Dry, lip-smacking and full of charm. This rosé is simple and fresh, but don't let that deter you, it is a beautiful summer sipper...
Urban Uco Malbec 2007

There's about 8500 cases of this wine made. Produced by the O Fournier family and known as Urban Uco Malbec 2007 Mendoza in the US, this wine over-delivers massively. There is an abundance of totally natural ripe fruit here with more than whiff of high altitude Malbec's rather haunting appeal. It is a deep dark purple hue. This particular vintage was exceptional because it was cooler than usual weather. The estate only sources their grapes from the Uco Valley retaining that extra acidity and freshness in the aromas. You also get great Malbec personality in the Uco Valley. The wine is made to be very fruity with soft tannins and a very accessible style. It has been aged for three months in oak barrels It has a hint of a flowery bouquet dominated by blackberries. The taste is intense. I thought there was just enough oak to give a little bit of the vanilla taste. Ripe but focused, with a nice beam of crushed raspberry, roasted vanilla and cocoa running along plush, medium-weight tannins.
Monte Antico IGT 2005(Tuscany)

The first thing you notice on the nose is sweet cherry liquor. A blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet this little IGT by Italian wine specialist Neil Empson and winemaker Franco Bernabei is aged in oak barrels for a year and in bottle for 6 months. On the nose are aromas of black cherry, chocolate, spice, earth, leather and plums. It's well balanced and on the palate are spice and cherries.It has fruit, acid, structure, mouth feel and for a wine at this price point. There's not much this wine wouldn't pair with when it comes to food. This is a red for those of you who should be drinking a white wine but refuse to. Great acid and a easy to like , food-friendly style. I for one will be taking it home to pair with some linguine and red sauce.
El Chaparral De Vega Sindoa Old Vines Grenache 2007
(Navarra)

This is old vine Grenache from the northernmost reaches of Spain in the region of Navarra, produced by female winemaker Concha Vecino. Long a stronghold of Grenache, this Basque territory is sandwiched closely between Logroño's Rioja country to the southwest and the Pyrenees directly to the northeast. One of Spains cooler growing regions the wines here or at least this one is very Rhone-like on the palate and otherwise. Rich and supple, this wine is very balanced showing black cherry, chocolate and cracked pepper notes. Decant for pure decadence.This elegant Grenache displays a velvety texture and balance of raspberry, plum sweetness that contrasts red berry acidity perfectly.The finish is lovely, with concentrated hints of strawberry preserves, dark fruit and smoky black pepper. A nice one for warm weather grilling or possibly a rack of ribs!

Orin Swift - Saldo 2007

Gaining experience and contacts in the Northern California Zinfandel growing community through the success of his Prisoner label, Orin Swift Cellars owner/winemaker Dave Phinney has gained access to some of the best Zinfandel vineyards in California. There are grapes from Sonoma, Napa, Amador, Mendocino, and Contra Costa counties. Some of these great vineyards include Monte Rosso, Eagle Point, Rockpile, Bismark, Beatty, Page Nord, Duarte, Solari, Evangehlo, Battuelo's, Tofanelli, Korte, Mable Tiedemann, Frediani, Lewers, Alta Vista, and Bald Mountain, just to name a few. There's a little Syrah and Petite Sirah blended in to give backbone and structure. A worthy addition to the Orin Swift family.
Crystal's Pick: Ostatu Rioja Blanco 2007

Bodegas Ostatu is a family winery located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region in the town  of Samaniego.The Saenz de Samaniego family has been in the area for many generations. The vineyards, which are protected by the Sierra Cantabria range, are composed of chalk and clay. The average age of the vines is 50 years old. A single parcel of Ostau's vineyards is dedicated to the white grape Vuira and a little bit of Malvasia. This is a modern-style white Rioja with fresh aromas of lemon and crisp minerality. Creamy and rich but with a steely focus.
Ian's Pick: Domaine Delesvaux Anjou 2005
$20.99 Dark garnet in color and on the nose: cocoa, leather, bell pepper for days. In the mouth you get mineral, earth, cocoa, currant, dry tobacco, ripe wine 8/10 killer juice! My wife got sick of my pronouncement "This $20 bottle drinks like a $30 bottle" with each fresh glass. Its modern in style, but still give the telltale bell pepper nose for Cabernet Franc. Biodynamic, aged 7 months sur lie, 20 year old vines.

Clos de la Roilette Fleurie 2007 $21.99
Certain songs are at once old and new; it seems impossible that they have not always existed in the substance around us, and yet they explain our environment and our place in it in a new and different way. Think the Beatles' "Yesterday," Tom Waits' "(We're All Gonna Be Just) Dirt in the Ground," the Archers of Loaf with "Chumming the Ocean." This wine is like that.
