As you would expect each class will have a particular theme and the staff here at the Wine Shop at Foxcroft will pair some exciting wine selections with each course that Tom and Scott prepare. Wine Classes on Sundays
Starting May 17th 2008
1:00 -3:00pm

Instructor: Ian Coyne, Certified Sommelier

We know there's a lot of information floating out there in cyberspace and a lot of people trying to get your attention but we've had numerous request to provide a platform where you guys could learn more detailed information about wine. We're open seven days a week at The Wine Shop and we thought Sunday afternoons would be a great time for this. We also know that it's hard to commit to a long six to seven week program so we've broken our classes up into an a la carte fashion. This way there's time to focus in detail on a particular
country's wine regions but not so long that the class conflicts with the other commitments in your lives. No one knows wine better than our staff and we're excited to be sharing that knowledge with you. With this format you can choose to focus on one country or more. The choice is yours. We'll be tasting some really great wines and light hors d' oeuvres will be provided. Seating is limited so call early to make your reservations...

About your instructor..

Ian Coyne, Certified Sommelier

Nominated for fourteen Emmies (not really) and called America's Funniest Wine Geek by Conrad Hunter, Ian Coyne has over 15 years experience in the hospitality industry. As a sommelier, he has worked at Cassique restaurant on Kiawah Island, S.C and Doonbeg Golf Club in Ireland.  While "critiquing" the pub fare in Ireland, Ian ran into a lot of pints of Guinness and a lot of great food and wine experiences that helped that to feed his passion for food and the drink. Ian's restaurant management experience includes prestigious establishments such as the Harbour Club in Charleston, S.C. and The River House at Palmetto Bluff, in Bluffton, S.C. At both locations he left a knowledgeable wine staff and a healthy bar tab. Join Ian, while we discuss the key points to the major wine regions of Italy and France.  P.S. Please, at least, pretend to laugh at his jokes. He is used to it...

 Conrad's Pick:
Orin Swift - Saldo 2007
$34.99 bottle
Gaining experience and contacts in the Northern California Zinfandel growing community through the success of his Prisoner label, Orin Swift Cellars owner/winemaker Dave Phinney has gained access to some of the best Zinfandel vineyards in California.
There are grapes from Sonoma, Napa, Amador, Mendocino, and Contra Costa counties. Some of these great vineyards include Monte Rosso, Eagle Point, Rockpile, Bismark, Beatty, Page Nord, Duarte, Solari, Evangehlo, Battuelo's, Tofanelli, Korte, Mable Tiedemann, Frediani, Lewers, Alta Vista, and Bald Mountain, just to name a few. There's a little Syrah and Petite Sirah blended in to give backbone and structure. A worthy addition to the Orin Swift family.

Crystal's Pick:

Ostatu Rioja Blanco 2007
$12.99

Bodegas Ostatu is a family winery located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region in the town
of Samaniego. The Saenz de Samaniego family has been in the area for many generations. The vineyards, which are protected by the Sierra Cantabria range, are composed of chalk and clay. The average age of the vines is 50 years old. A single parcel of Ostau's vineyards is dedicated to the white grape Vuira and a little bit of Malvasia A modern style white Rioja with fresh aromas of lemon and crisp minerality. Creamy and rich but with a steely focus.

Ian's Pick:
Domaine Delesvaux Anjou 2005
$20.99

Dark garnet in color and on the nose: cocoa, leather, bell pepper for days. In the mouth you get mineral, earth, cocoa, currant, dry tobacco, ripe wine 8/10 killer juice! My wife got sick of my pronouncement "This $20 bottle drinks like a $30 bottle" with each fresh glass. Its modern in style, but still give the telltale bell pepper nose for Cabernet Franc. Biodynamic, aged 7 months sur lie, 20 year old vines.

Susannah's Pick:
Clos de la Roilette  Fleurie 2007     $21.99

Certain songs are at once old and new; it seems impossible that they have not always existed in the substance around us, and yet they explain our environment and our place in it in a new and different way.  Think the Beatles' "Yesterday," Tom Waits' "(We're All Gonna Be Just) Dirt in the Ground," the Archers of Loaf with "Chumming the Ocean." This wine is like that.

Greetings!

I case some of you are wondering why my face and neck are so red this week, it's because I spent Saturday in Waxhaw at the Queen's Cup Race. I'm one of the whitest guys I know (at least on the outside) and it doesn't take much to turn me into a lobster. You'll be happy to know I brought plenty of Gruner Veltliner, Cava, and Rose to ease the pain. Not a bottle of Chardonnay to be had. You know something? Everyone loved the wines anyway! I felt like the Great Gatsby dressed in white sipping on a glass of  Commanderie de Peyrassol Rose. It was a lot of fun and by the days end I felt no pain. Luckily I had a designated driver standing by...

I'm excited to finalize the Spanish dinner I've been teasing you with for the last few weeks. Andre Tamers has got to be one of the most interesting guys in the wine business and with his busy schedule going back and forth between Chapel Hill and Spain we're lucky to have him for the evening. The menu looks fantastic and I'm excited to take the dinners to a new level. Andre's portfolio is one of the best collections of "real" Spanish wines (as opposed to those put together by importers and manipulated  for the "American" palate) out there. Most of the wineries in the portfolio practice sustainable agriculture and reflect the terroir and diversity of the regions they come from. He's the guy who introduced America to Txakoli. Who else for God's sake would be crazy enough to import Basque Cider and the glasses to drink it with? Who else would be crazy enough to buy it in Charlotte except us? (It's in the White Wine to Go Cooler...) Folks, don't miss this one. It's a bargain. I can't walk out of the Fresh Market for 50 bucks and then I have to cook it! Let us cook for you instead...
We've also decided to add back a "Staff Favorites" section to our newsletter. I have some of the city's biggest wine geeks working here and it's a shame not to share some of their favorites with you. No one has more passion about wine than our staff and the fact that you've learn to trust us with your wine selections. That trust is not lost on us...

Wednesday May 13th 2009
Time: 7:00 PM
Special Guest - Andre Tamers of
De Maison Selections
Cost: $50.00 per person plus tax and gratuity

With two wine dinners in-house under our belt we're beginning to really have fun. This promises to be our best dinner yet, certainly in terms of proportion and quality and diversity of wine. As  many of you know Andre Tamers is a dynamic speaker and wine importer who calls Chapel Hill home but spends the better part of each year in Spain sourcing top notch winemakers and vineyards. We get a rare opportunity to bend his ear and have him on hand to walk you through some of the wines in his portfolio. We didn't hold back of the wines either as you will find out when you taste them. It's another no-brainer for sure. I can almost taste this menu already. Call to reserve your seats...

Domaine du Salvard Cheverny 2007
 Reg. Price $17.99
Discount Price $15.99

The Loire is home to some of the best Sauvignon Blancs in the world, Domaine du Salvard Cheverny, a Kermit Lynch discovery comes from the Cherverny AOC (in Touraine, and just down the river from Sancerre). It's a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Chardonnay (15%) cofermented and aged on its lees. It shows a very light golden color, with just a hint of green around the edges. Lots of minerals and flint with a hint of citrus and fresh cut hay. The flavors continue to develop in the glass as the wine opens up, with tangy apples and more fresh cut hay following the minerals. The finish was amazing - very long and dry. Serve it up with lighter fish dishes, summer salads with lots of herbal flavors or anything with goat cheese as an ingredient. With the presence of Chardonnay, even a lighter cream sauce might work. Those of you that are fan of New Zealand  Sauv Blancs would do well to give this one a spin.

 Domaine Houchart Rosé 2007
(Cotes de Provence)
   Reg. Price $13.99
Discount Price $9.99

Aurelien Houchart was an forward thinking proprietor and negociant in wine during the last century, and created one of the largest domain in Provence. Today it is owned by Genevieve, the wife of Jerome Quiot and granddaughter of was Aurélien Houchart. Today the estate produces a wide array of wines but it is one in particular that got  our attention. Domaine Houchart Côtes de Provence Rosé is a blend of 35% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 20% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% other grape varieties. is a blend of 35% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 20% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% other grape varieties. This is exactly what a rosé should be. Dry, lip-smacking and full of charm. This rosé is simple and fresh, but don't let that deter you, it is a beautiful summer sipper...

  Urban Uco Malbec 2007

(Uco Valley, Argentina)
Reg Price $12.99

Discount Price $10.99

There's about 8500 cases of this wine made. Produced by the O Fournier family and  known as Urban Uco Malbec 2007 Mendoza in the US,  this wine over-delivers massively. There is an abundance of totally natural ripe fruit here with more than whiff of high altitude Malbec's rather haunting appeal. It is a deep dark purple hue. This particular vintage was exceptional because it was cooler than usual weather. The estate only sources their grapes from the Uco Valley retaining that extra acidity and freshness in the aromas. You  also get great Malbec personality in the Uco Valley. The wine is made to be very fruity with soft tannins and a very accessible style. It has been aged for three months in oak barrels It has a hint of a flowery bouquet dominated by blackberries. The taste is intense. I thought there was just enough oak to give a little bit of the vanilla taste. Ripe but focused, with a nice beam of crushed raspberry, roasted vanilla and cocoa running along plush, medium-weight tannins.

Monte Antico IGT 2005(Tuscany)
Reg Price $13.99
Discount Price $11.99

The first thing you notice on the nose is sweet cherry liquor. A blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet this little IGT by Italian wine specialist Neil Empson and winemaker Franco Bernabei is aged in oak barrels for a year and in bottle for 6 months. On the nose are aromas of black cherry, chocolate, spice, earth, leather and plums. It's well balanced and on the palate are spice and cherries. It has fruit, acid, structure, mouth feel and for a wine at this price point. There's not much this wine wouldn't pair with when it comes to food. This is a red for those of you who should be drinking a white wine but refuse to. Great acid and a easy to like , food-friendly style. I for one will be taking it home to pair with some linguine and red sauce.

El Chaparral De Vega Sindoa  Old Vines Grenache 2007
(Navarra)
Reg Price $16.99
Discount Price $13.99

This is old vine Grenache from the northernmost reaches of Spain in the region of Navarra, produced by female winemaker Concha Vecino. Long a stronghold of Grenache, this Basque territory is sandwiched closely between Logroño's Rioja country to the southwest and the Pyrenees directly to the northeast. One of Spains cooler growing regions the wines here or at least this one is very Rhone-like on the palate and otherwise. Rich and supple, this wine is very balanced showing black cherry, chocolate and cracked pepper notes. Decant for pure decadence. This elegant Grenache displays a velvety texture and balance of raspberry, plum sweetness that contrasts red berry acidity perfectly. The finish is lovely, with concentrated hints of strawberry preserves, dark fruit and smoky black pepper. A nice one for warm weather grilling or possibly a rack of ribs!
At the Wine Shop at Foxcroft our goal is to provide you with Charlotte's best selection of quality wines and beers at competitive prices. Great service is what we strive for so if there's anything you're looking for: that difficult vintage, a special gift, whatever, don't hesitate to contact us with your requests.  We look forward to seeing you in the shop...
