Sept 20, 2012

Hola amigos,
it's that time of year again, we like to get our focus on before the holidays hit.  October 29th we will be starting our 6 week fall weight loss program.  Details to follow.  No cry babies allowed, we're about to crank this up a notch.

This fall we are working on having bi-weekly supermarket tours.  If interested, please email Kim at kimberly@EatToLive.biz

Newport Naked Magazine's 4th issue is now out. Bigger and better (if that is at all possible). I have an article on hair health...foods, supplements & herbs can be used for a sweet mane. I think they put me on the cover because I like wine so much. Antioxidants anyone?!

What's up with this new green coffee bean extract?  Worth the cashola?

Since Dr. Oz talked about the benefits of weight loss associated with the supplement, my inbox has been flooded with clients asking if they should take it.  Will they lose 20 pounds by the end of the month?

Green coffee bean extract is taken from raw, unroasted coffee beans.  Marketing of this product focuses on the chlorogenic acid it contains.  Research has shown that higher levels of chlorogenic acid  result in accelerated weight loss.  By concentrating this component, scientists are able to decrease the amount of caffeine that would have been consumed while ingesting the recommended amount of CA.

So far it seems to be safe for ingestion in healthy adults.  The problem is that research on this supplement is limited.  We are lacking studies that show long term effects, and most of the research done thus far has been funded by companies that manufacture green coffee bean extract.  A 12 week study that shows no adverse side effects is not adequate enough to show long term effects.  When Dr. Oz featured this product, it was claimed to double weight loss.  Read the fine print...the control group lost an avg of 2 pounds, while the placebo group lost 1 pound.  Worth the money?  I'm not so sure.    Some ads also claim "weight loss without diet or exercise", but further reading, they recommend no 'new' exercise...recommending that if you are exercising, you need to continue.

Before adding to your supplement routine, I would do a little personal research.  Talk to a professional (I can help you decide if your current diet, exercise and health status would benefit from this supplement).  Also keep in mind dosage.  More is not better.  Infact, studies have shown that too much chlorogenic acid can raise risk of heart disease.

Natural Health

It is not uncommon for sleep issues to come about from seasonal change. Here is some helpful info from Herbalist Lynn Murdock:

Many people today experience insomnia and simply do not get the required amount of sleep needed to function properly throughout the day.  Not getting enough sleep can cause many illnesses, danger of falling asleep while driving, making errors at work, loss of motivation & energy to exercise, among many other problems.
Some of the reasons for insomnia include anxiety, nervousness, over active mind (thinking about what needs to be done the next day, etc.), pain, heart palpitations & worry.
Taking medication to remedy this can cause side effects which many people don't want to deal with. So what can you take that is more gentle yet effective?
Try Valerian root tincture.
What is Valerian root known for?
Nerve tonic
Nerve sedative
For insomnia, muscle tension, nervous excitement, anxiety, pain
Palpitations, (both nervous and cardiac)
High blood pressure (slows & calms the action of the heart while increasing it's force)
Cerebral sedative
Antispasmodic
Tincture of the fresh root is the most reliable form which is the only way it is made at Earth, Wind & Fire Farm
Dose: 1-2 tsp. diluted in water three times per day or as often as needed.
Keep it beside the bed & take it often until you fall asleep.
Contraindications:
Can take high doses for up to 3 weeks, then take a break before continuing.
Do not take Valerian root in combination with insomnia or anxiety medications or anti-anxiety herbs such as Kava or St. John'swort.

Lynn can be reached at herbalady@sbcglobal.net.  I will be making an herb pick-up at her farm this weekend, so feel free to shoot me a message for an order.

Exercise

"Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right".

If you are looking to push yourself to the limit, I would highly recommend one of the Adventure races.  Like Woah!  I just did the Spartan 11 mile race in NJ last weekend,  now with  a whole new respect for ski mountains and mud.

Not sure if you can hang? Our dietitian Jason Oliveira. MS. RD.LDN. CSCS. SPN leads fitness groups training specifically for Tough Mudder, Rugged Maniac, Spartan, whatever your poison may be.  Join him at Lincoln Woods State Park every other Sunday at 9am.  Contact Jason for more details, off site trainings and any other info.  His interval training is designed to increase speed, agility, quickness, balance, strength, power and endurance.  Workouts are 1-3+ hours.
