Hi friends,

Wow where to start?!   2011 so far has proven to be a fabulous year.  The WASP weight loss contest is a huge success with over 50 participants and a whole lot of clean food & sweaty workouts.  Right now everyone has a fair shot at the $500 prize, keep up all the hard work and focus.

We have also chosen our 2011 makeover participant, Denise Porter.  Denise has jumped right in with her training and nutrition.  I am excited to see how many positive changes she makes and will keep posting updates.  This is a physical and mental journey that I am so pleased to be a part of.

Also this spring I will be returning to radio with John from The Green Grocer on WADK.  We will post show times as soon as we know.   Any suggestions on health/nutrition topics?

Did You Know...
Kale is more flavorful in the winter months, and is a good source of vitamins A & C, calcium and potassium.  Kale is great steamed, sauteed, added in soups, stirfrys, fresh juices...

Nutrition

Almonds are a wonderful adjunct to a healthy diet, however we need to be concious of labels.  Yes, even with almonds some manufacturers feel the need to add sucralose and MSG.  Can't trick me Emerald....I'm way ahead of you & spewing your secret all over the place.

Almonds contain a good amount of protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin E and antioxidants.  Eating almonds regularly can contribute to heart health, improved cholesterol and blood pressure, controlled blood sugar, colon health, decreased constipation, weight loss, managed appetite, and brain development.

If you are buying almonds in bulk at the healthfood store, you're in the clear.  If sorting through the flavored variety, make sure to scan the ingredient list to see what these little guys are being drenched in.

Blue Diamond is now using stevia in some of their flavored almonds, however be sure to still read the label as each flavor has varied ingredients and additional sugar.

Emerald Cocoa roast for example contains sucralose & acesulfame potassium.  Emerald Smoked almonds have added trans fats.   Eat clean, shop smart.

Natural Health

If you color your hair, this may be of interest to you.  If not, read anyway and spread the smarts.  Just because you aren't eating your hair dye, the chemicals are still able to cross the skin barrier and enter your body.  22 chemicals found in hair dye found to cause bladder cancer have been banned in Europe.  Since the U.S. is a little behind the times, it is important to be an informed consumer and know just what you are putting in your body.  More detailed information can be found here:  http://www.naturalnews.com/022575.html

Vegetable based rinses, henna and herbal dyes are some alternative options.   Some easy methods to try are sage rinses for brunettes, or chamomile rinse for blondes.   Other ideas for alternative methods:  http://www.motherearthnews.com/Modern-Homesteading/1982-03-01/Hair-Color-Natural-Dyes.aspx

Advanced cosmetic therapies have hair dyes that are free of PPD, amonia and resorcinol, 100% plant based.  www.actnaturals.com

Exercise
Setting aside time to exercise can be challenging for some, but it doesn't have to be impossible.  If you want it bad enough, you can find a way to make it happen.  I thought I would share with you one of my favorite quotes.

"There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results"

Devoting a set time to exercise is beneficial for body & mind, however if you need to occassionally improvise, here is a great website helping to sneak in extra movement.  Don't forget that aside from exercising frequently, an active lifestyle helps.  Try some of the tips on this site to amp up your day.   www.squeezeitin.com
