January 12, 2011
Hi friends,

We have a lot of new subscribers this month,  thank you to everyone for your interest and continued support.  It's 2011 and we are doing big things this year.  The WASP was so much fun last year that we've brought it back.  Starting February 14th until April 22nd we will be running our Weightloss Assisted Support Program.  Highest bodyfat% lost = $500.  Bam!  Cost is $10, please come in to Renaissance to sign up.  I hope to help everyone in the contest with the diet aspect so that intake is as efficient and nutritious as possible.  Don't hesitate to call me for an appt, I have only a few left in the next month.

Also we will be doing a total transformation for one person in the community.  This includes 10 weeks of personal training, nutrition, chiropractic, hair, makeup and teeth whitening.  Please send a story of why you or the person you are nominating should be our pick-aroo.  Deadline for entries is Feb 10th, and can be sent to Renaissance Fitness & Wellness at 195 Broadway, Newport RI 02840.  Entries can also be emailed to Paul Manning:

As many of you know, I am graduating with a Masters in Natural Health in 2 weeks.  This has been a long time coming, and I'm excited for the changes that will now be taking place.  Newsletters will be back to their normal schedule.

I would also like to know your thoughts on a possible radio show.  John Wood (owner of The Green Grocer) and Dr. Pruitt (Owner of Pruitt Chiropractic - RI's finest) and yours truly, have thrown this idea around.  Interested to hear what our clients, patients, customers think about this.  I think it might be a lot of horseplay, John yelling at us to be serious, and some nutrition info thrown in once in a while.  Sounds like success to me.

And lastly, I have frequent nutrition information and recipes on my facebook page.  How much easier can this get?  Just hit the "f".

Did You Know...
Guava has more lycopene than a tomato.  Lycopene is known for its prostate health contribution, but also protects against free radical damage and accelerated aging.  Go guava!

Nutrition

Sodium intake is important for all of us to monitor, don't wait until blood pressure or cardiac issues arise. The American Heart Association recommends that healthy individuals eat less than 2,400mg sodium daily (1 teaspoon of salt), however they urge us to aim for under 1,500mg to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

It may seem like salt is in just about everything, but with a little effort this can be easily avoided.  One easy tip is to use organic kelp granules if you are used to cooking or adding salt to your foods.  1/4 tsp of kelp granules contains only 25mg sodium, take that Morton.

Aside from being a salt substitute, kelp is loaded with nutrients and has some pretty amazing health benefits.  It helps to strengthen the immune system and cardiovascular system, reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease, fights cancer, and is good for our bones and teeth.  Kelp also supports thyroid and metabolism.

This is the brand that I've been using for quite some time.   Ok, this is actually the only brand I've ever used....

Natural Health

Given that it is January, cleansing has been a topic of many conversations lately.  I urge you to pick your cleanses wisely and become educated on ingredients before swallowing and hoping for the best.  Just because a product is marketed nicely, this does not validate quality or results.  Just look at Splenda for example, round of applause for their marketing team.  I am still not buying it, regardless of how many smiling people picking flowers you put in their commercials.

I have had several people asking me about Cascara Sagrada lately, as this shows up quite frequently.  I hope to clear the confusion a bit.  Cascara Sagrada is a popular ingredient found in many cleanses.  It is derived from the bark of a tree in the buckhorn family.  Cascara Sagrada is considered to be one of the safer, more mild laxatives.  It doesn't result in  intestinal griping like some ingredients, making it easier to maintain a normal routine while cleansing.  Along with cleansing, it helps to improve intestinal tone.

Dr. Christoher's Quick Colon Cleanse is a great product, this contains Cascara Sagrada along with aloe, another one of my fav's.

Exercise
New years resolutions are going strong, and gyms are packed.  To make sure that you don't fizzle out, here are some tips.

1.  State specific, measurable goals you are trying to reach.  For example, " start yoga and practice on a weekly basis" or "comple a triathalon in July"  is better than "be more active" or "feel better".

2.  What do you need to do specifically to ensure these goals are met.  Set up your training, enroll in the race, guy specific gear, bring gym clothes to work.

3.  Note possible road blocks and make an attack plan ahead of time.

4.  If exercise is any part of your goal, plan out as specific as you can.  Make a month template and plug in how many days per week you will do kickboxing, or which days will be workout day vs rest day.  "More exercise" isn't going to happen by itself.

5.  Do research.  If this is new to you, educate yourself on how to properly go about this type of exercise.  If you are new to weight lifting, pay attention to proper form and avoid injury.  Do you need the help of a professional?  Get their information and call them now, no procrastination.

6. Visualize your training or workout before you do it.  Working out is equally mental as it is physical.

7.  Take some time to visit websites, read books, and talk to professionals to get comfortable with your new embarkment.  Some websites like www.acefitness.org have video demonstrations of exercises so you can practice at home.
